Weekly Monday night community meditation
Weekly Monday night online meditations in a welcoming community
35-minutes of sitting meditation practice followed by interactive sharing, discussion
We experiment with different solo meditations, from restful absorption to creative visualizations, mindfulness-style noting (of various mind-body components), loving-kindness, sound meditations, choiceless awareness and many others. You don’t need to follow any of these techniques if you don’t want to – some people prefer to stay with their tried-and-true regular practice.
The CEC is passionately nonsectarian – both humanistic and contemplative traditions are represented.

Sunset Satsangs
**Sunset Satsangs 🌅**
Join us for a relaxed evening in the park as the sun sets behind the Toronto skyline.
*A satsang is simply a gathering to sing, breathe, and connect. The word is Sanskrit, meaning "good company" or the company of the Truth. It's a calm hour to unwind, meet kind people, and enjoy being together in nature.*
*No experience needed, just an open heart.*
We sing Sanskrit mantras in call and response style, where our musicians and singers lead a line and everyone echoes it back. No need to be a good singer, just enjoy the moment. 🎶
As the music builds, stress melts away, and expert instructors guide us into a powerful breathwork and meditation toward the end. When the music returns, people find themselves simply savouring the sound and the sunset.
Bring a blanket and a friend, and settle in for golden light and good company. 🤍
🗓 June 14th
⏰ 7:30 PM onwards

SQUARE ONE - Practical Philosophy Meetup 🇨🇦
**🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌
**📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://tally.so/r/81LP4A), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the official start.
* 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them.
* 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**🧧PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. If you'd like to support, you can [donate here](https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/donation-form/donate-to-practical-philosophy)!

**💛 WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
**🗣** “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam
🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel
**🤓 FAQ**
* **Do I need to study or read anything to attend?**
No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it.
* **Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?**
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* **Is it mostly men that attend?**
Surprisingly, no! Although often, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms.
* **Can I come alone?**
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* **Can I be late?**
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* **Where do you meet?**
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/81LP4A) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/).

The Crowd
One of the most influential works of social psychology in history, The Crowd was highly instrumental in creating this field of study by analyzing, in detail, mass behavior. The book had a profound impact not only on Freud but also on such twentieth-century masters of crowd control as Hitler and Mussolini — both of whom may have used its observations as a guide to stirring up popular passions. In the author's words, "The masses have never thirsted after the truth. Whoever can supply them with illusions is easily their master; whoever attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim."
Although the volume focuses on crowd psychology, it is also brilliantly instructive on the effects of the generally accepted beliefs of a nation's citizenry on the processes of history. Among the topics covered here are general characteristics and mental unity of the crowd; the crowd's sentiments and morality; its ideas, reasoning power, and imagination; opinions and beliefs of crowds and the means used by leaders to persuade; classification of crowds, including criminal and electrical assemblages, as well as the functioning of criminal juries and parliamentary assemblies.
A must-read volume for students of history, sociology, law, and psychology, The Crowd will also be invaluable to politicians, statesmen, investors, and marketing managers. "Any study of crowd behavior, popular psychology, fascism, etc. would do well to begin with Le Bon's work." — Anson Rabinbach, Professor of History, Princeton University.
Survivalist Series: Introduction to Foraging
**Please note the only way to register for this adventure is on [our website.](https://www.wildernessunion.com/adventures/intro-foraging)**
**Knowing how to safely and sustainably forage is one of the oldest skills there is, and one that's been largely lost in modern life.**
This one-day workshop will reconnect you with the wild plants growing all around us. You'll learn how to spot, identify and confidently harvest a range of common edibles, alongside developing the kind of attentive eye that turns every walk in the woods into something richer.
You will learn:
* How to identify Ontario's most common wild edibles by their leaves, flowers, roots and seasonal cycles
* How to tell edible plants apart from their toxic lookalikes
* Where to look for different types of edibles
* The principles of ethical and sustainable foraging
**Who It's For:** Anyone curious about the food growing right under our feet. No prior foraging experience required. For those with some background, this is a great chance to fill in gaps and build confidence with new species.
**About this series:** The Survivalist Series is an expert-led set of courses designed to develop applicable and life-saving skills in the outdoors. Keep your eyes peeled for more courses on many other topics as they become available.
***NB: Foraging comes with its own set of risks. For the purposes of this class, we do not condone the consumption of any wild edibles.***
**Highlights**
**Expert Instruction –** Our amazing expert guide will teach you everything you need to know in a safe and approachable way.
**Wild Edibles Library –** Build a working knowledge of the most common wild plants in our region, along with the lookalikes you'll want to avoid.
**Sustainable Harvesting –** Learn the rules of ethical foraging so you can take only what you need without harming the ecosystems you're walking through.
**Event cost: $80+HST (for explorer members) - $40 optional transport available.**
**Register [here.](https://www.wildernessunion.com/adventures/intro-foraging)**
**About Wilderness Union**
Wilderness Union is deliberate about building an outdoors community that connects you to the life-changing magic of the outdoors and helps you find your people.
Members range from 20-40 years old. The group is a mix of GTA locals and newcomers to Toronto from within Canada and abroad.
Attendance numbers on Meetup don't reflect our actual event attendance - we typically have 15-20 community members at each event. Large enough that there's someone new to meet but small enough that it's not overwhelming!

Transformational Tarot Salon for Women
**TAROT SALON**
**Transform Your Life Through Tarot and Intuition**
**Personal growth for women in an intimate small-group setting.**
Join a warm and supportive circle of women for self-discovery, insight, and meaningful conversation.
In this intimate salon, we will explore subconscious patterns, gain clarity on challenges and opportunities in our lives, and discover fresh perspectives through guided discussion and tarot.
I am an experienced tarot card reader and certified transformational life coach. Prior to my coaching practice, I served as a Superintendent of Schools, a role that involved leadership, management of intense situations, coaching and facilitating. Over many years of working with staff and with clients, I have learned that lasting change begins when we become aware of the beliefs, habits, and assumptions that operate beneath the surface of our conscious minds.
We will begin with introductions and a thought-provoking question. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect, share, explore insights and select tarot cards for deeper reflection. Each gathering is unique, but the goal is always greater clarity, self-awareness, and personal growth.
During each gathering, participants will explore thought-provoking questions, share insights in a safe and confidential environment, and experience how tarot can reveal perspectives that might otherwise remain hidden. The cards often point us toward possibilities we may not have consciously considered, yet which can lead to meaningful growth and positive change.
This is not a fortune-telling event. It is an opportunity to connect with yourself more deeply, learn from the experiences of other women, and explore what may be ready to emerge in your life.
Together we will create a compassionate, respectful circle where honesty is welcomed, confidentiality is honoured, and every participant is encouraged to discover her own answers.
Some women may attend a few sessions and leave with valuable insights they can apply independently. Others may choose to continue their journey through ongoing participation in the salon or through one-on-one transformational coaching. The choice is entirely yours.

TUESDAY, 2:00 –4:00 p.m. (twice monthly)

COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above.
There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change.
The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/).
Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers.
For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
