We’ve all made the exclamation: “now, that is beautiful!” And life seems better, richer for it. What do we mean by ‘beauty’? What qualities does something require in order to be classified in such a way? What things can be given such label? Are there things that do not deserve to be called beautiful? Is beauty restricted to physicality? Is beauty merely subjective or does it have an objective framework? Is it a matter of the feminine side of life? Is it something internal or external? Come along next Tuesday evening at the lovely Third Space Cafe Smithfield for a facilitated discussion about beauty. Newcomers are welcome. NOTE: we ask for a 3 Euro donation to cover expenses. State Pathologist Dr. SallyAnne Collins will be in conversation with Garrett Fagan about the history of forensic science, the development of investigative techniques and their use in crime fiction from the historical to the contemporary. The discussion will consider what the fictional pathologist Quirke in John Banville's Christine Falls gets right and wrong about the work of a forensic pathologist, and the differences between forensic pathology in the 1950's and today. The work of the State Pathologist will be explained and there will be an opportunity for questions. Dr. Sally Collins studied medicine at Edinburgh University in Scotland and specialises in Forensic Histopathology in Liverpool before returning to Edinburgh. After five years there, Dr. Collis joined the Office of the State Pathologist in Dublin as a State Pathologist. Garrett Fagan teaches literature at the Open University and at universities in Dublin and at Warwick University in the UK. He teaches the One Dublin One Book/UCD course on Banville's Christine Falls. Hi all, I’m setting up Richard Linklaters much admired ‘*Before*’ triology over three sucessive Sundays this April beginning with **Before Sunrise** for **Sunday April 12th at 4pm.** I’ve never seen this triology but have heard great things about it. One of cinema’s great love stories begins on a train from Budapest to Paris, when chance sees Parisienne Céline (Julie Delpy) sit across from American tourist Jesse (Ethan Hawke). The two begin a conversation, and the chemistry is so immediate that she agrees to disembark with him in Vienna and keep him company before his flight the following morning. The two wander around the city at night, always talking, sharing confidences and truths until dawn breaks and threatens their connection. Join us for a tour of Brothers Drake Meadery in Grandview, hosted by the owner Oron Benary. He will explain the mead-making process and offer us generous samples of their fine meads. Mead is basically wine that is made from honey instead of grapes. There are many different flavors that range from dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, to sweet. They are best known for their Apple Pie Mead. Oron has offered us a special price of 5.00 each person for the tour and tasting, which is normally 25.00 per person. I've taken the tour several times, and it's always enlightening and fun. Rebecca will bring a tea that will pair well with the mead for a tea tasting afterwards. Park anywhere around the building. Please avoid parking in front of the houses in the neighborhood behind the Meadery. Please keep your RSVP current.
