The *On a whim* live storytelling show is on Wednesday, 24th June. If you’ve got a story or just an idea in mind, come to one of our pitch workshops at the end of May. If your story is shortlisted for the show, our host will work with you as you polish and rehearse it. 📌 Story Requirements: * Your story must be true * It must be told in the first person—you are the main character * It should be between 5-10 minutes You don't need to have a completed or polished story ready - just a beginning idea is okay. This workshop is open to individuals at all levels, first-timers or old hands. The purpose of Hong Kong Stories is to help you become a better storyteller. Everyone has a story to tell, and everyone loves a story. Note: Please update your RSVP, ideally 12 hours before the event if you're unable to make it. Urban Krav Maga is a defence system that: The Urban Krav Maga aim is to equip the student as soon as possible to defend themselves against the most common attacks they may face. Once the student has mastered these techniques more difficult scenarios are addressed to build a support system that will enable the student to deal with almost any situation. By teaching concepts through techniques, students are taught how to read a situation and react/respond accordingly, even if they have not experienced that exact same scenario in training. Giving students the ability to improvise is an important element of our training, this is not like learning a kata. Awareness, avoidance and pre-emption are placed high in order of priority but we recognise that you can’t always avoid a potential violent encounter. We teach everything that is needed for self defence when it’s necessary in all environments, including, highly confined, crowded spaces, cars, shopping centres, nightclubs, buses etc. We make no apologies for our civilian approach to street violence and our subsequent breakaway from the original military solutions in dealing with armed attackers: a knife defence based on somebody attacking like they were making a committed bayonet thrust will not be so effective as one that is based on somebody stabbing with an aggressive pumping/piston motion with fast recoil when we are dealing with today’s street. As stated we retain the term Krav Maga as our approach reflects that on which Krav Maga was originally founded and we are, of course, indebted to the experiences we have gained training with the various Israeli Fighting Systems

Those of you who are familiar with Wan Chai might know about the temple along Queen's Road East dedicated to the deity **[Hung Shing (灣仔洪聖廟)](https://temples.tungwahcsd.org/hung-shing-templepak-shing-hau-temple-wanchai)** along what used to be the Victoria Harbour shoreline. There is another, larger temple not far away with an even more interesting past. The **[Yuk Hui Temple (玉虛宮)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wan_Chai_Pak_Tai_Temple)** is dedicated to **Pak Tai (北帝),** the Emperor of the North, and stands as a testament to the fact that a little corner of Wan Chai was a center of wealth and prosperity for not only English traders but also resident Chinese merchants. The temple has a host of deities, such as **Kwun Yam (觀音), Kwan Tai (關帝), and Lui Cho (呂祖)**. Most interestingly, the dedicated to the **Dragon Mother (龍 母殿**) is rare as Taoist goddesses are few and far between. The temple's rooftop figures are amazing and include a pair of dragons, a firing pearl, two aoyus (鰲魚, dragon fish), figurines of Chinese opera, floral patterns, etc., made by a Shiwan kiln, dated 1907. All precious and virtually unreplaceable by today's standards. Afterwards, we can head over to Hung Shing (灣仔洪聖廟) and peek in and see how the temple is maintaining itself. We'll also see a statue of the elusive fertility / widwife goddess **[Kam Fa Neung Neung (金花娘娘](https://ting902.com/2020/08/20/the-fertility-goddess-a-visit-to-hong-kongs-golden-flower-temple/))** We'll meet at street level, just outside Pacific Place 3, exit F, and down the long corridor BEFORE you enter the Pacific Place shopping mall. We'll walk down QRE to the Yuk Hui / Pak Tai Temple and then backtrack.

Cancer is still a major health concern, even with all the progress in medicine. In this month's talk, we’ll look at a surprising angle: how nerves around and inside solid tumours may be helping cancer grow and resist treatment. We’ll explain, in simple terms, why nerves are found in tumours, how they interact, and how this interaction can influence how fast the disease progresses and how well treatments work. You don’t need a science background to enjoy this talk, just curiosity about how our body’s own systems can sometimes be hijacked by cancer. Please RSVP so we can plan numbers with the venue.
