Feminist Question Time LIVE w/ speakers from around the world! Every Saturday AM
Feminist Question Time LIVE w/ speakers from around the world! Every Saturday AM
We are not alone! Come listen, learn, and share at this weekly ***WOMEN ONLY*** presentation by Women's Declaration International (formerly Women's Human Rights Campaign). Join this sorority of radical feminists from around the world as they inform us about the challenges and struggles in their own countries. Chat with other attendees and put questions to the panelists. Following the presentation, you are invited to join breakout rooms (women only please) with the panelists. These weekly online webinars present a new panel each week from around the world, often reporting on a central theme. They are attended by a global feminist and activist community of between 250-350. The main focus is how gender ideology is harming the rights of women and girls. The speaker list and any particular theme is usually announced mid-week before the webinar. Information will be added here as it becomes available. Discussing The Topics That Matter Most - VIRTUALLY!
Discussing The Topics That Matter Most - VIRTUALLY!
Contemplative Conversations has held a space for people to meet and talk about what is important to them for over 4 years! Covid-19 changed the world as we know it. We realized that meeting in person would not take place in 2020. Yet, for our group, these changes have come to be an opportunity to see and meet new friends - virtually. Contemplative Conversations will continue to host our discussions online via Zoom through 2021. In this way, we can meet and greet each other no matter where we are in the world! Eventually, we will return to meeting in person in locations around the Triad. Our conversations will always take place on every other Saturday morning at 9am - 11am EST. Same rules apply, so please read the description below. WHAT WE WILL DO *************** We will spend a little time getting to know each other, and begin exploring the scope and direction of our discussions. The list of topics to consider is broad, and together we will narrow the field to a few most popular issues to focus on. As we move into the discussions, expect robust and energizing conversation that will peel back the layers of our topic and help us move to the core of the important issues we decide to address. We recognize that we sometimes don't agree with the opinions or beliefs of others who choose to join us; however, the diverse discussion that develops is encouraged. Contemplative conversations are not debates. Instead, we seek to understand, then be understood. To support this effort, we strongly discourage unfounded conspiratorially charged dialogue. IMPORTANT TO KNOW *************** Our meetings will continue to be moderated. Disrespect in any form will not be tolerated. Each person will be allow 2 minutes to share their thoughts on the topic at hand. Please feel free to share resources you've found to be helpful. This meeting space will require a password to enter in the Zoom conference call. It would be helpful to download the free Zoom app to your device for easier access to the meetings.

Live-Reading Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics – North American Style
Live-Reading Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics – North American Style
Let's try something new. For the next dozen weeks or so, starting 4/17/2022, we are going to live-read and discuss Aristotle's \~*Nicomachean Ethics*\~. What is new and different about this project is that the translation, by Adam Beresford (2020), happens to be rendered in standard 'Murican English. . From the translator's "Note" on the text: . "This translation is conservative in interpretation and traditional in aim. It aims to translate the text as accurately as possible. . "I translated every page from scratch, from a clean Greek text, rather than revising an existing translation. ... I wanted to avoid the scholars’ dialect that is traditionally used for translating Aristotle. ... "I reject the approach of Arthur Adkins, Elizabeth Anscombe, and others who followed Nietzsche in supposing that the main elements of modern thinking about right and wrong were unknown to the Greeks, or known to them only in some radically different form. My view of humanity and of our shared moral instincts is shaped by a newer paradigm. This is a post-Darwinian translation. (It is also more in line with the older, both Aristotelian and Christian view of human character.) . "Having said that, I have no interest at all in modernizing Aristotle’s ideas. All the attitudes of this treatise remain fully Greek, very patriarchal, somewhat aristocratic, and firmly embedded in the fourth century BC. My choice of dialect (standard English) has no bearing on that whatsoever. (It is perfectly possible to express distinctively Greek and ancient attitudes in standard English.) ... I have also not simplified the text in any way. I have translated every iota, particle, preposition, noun, verb, adjective, phrase, clause, and sentence of the original. Every premise and every argument therefore remains – unfortunately – exactly as complex and annoyingly difficult as in any other version in whatever dialect. ... "Some scholars and students unwarily assume that the traditional dialect has a special connection with Greek and that using it brings readers closer to the original text; and that it makes the translation more accurate. In reality, it has no special tie to the Greek language, either in its main philosophical glossary or in its dozens of minor (and pointless) deviations from normal English. And in my view it certainly makes any translation much less accurate. . "I will occasionally refer to the scholars’ dialect (‘Gringlish’) and its traditional glossary in the Notes." . . Here is our plan: 1\. Read Intro excerpts or a summary to gain the big picture\. 2\. Read a segment of the translated text\. 3\. Discuss it analytically and interpretively\. 4\. Repeat again at \#2 for several more times\. 5\. Discuss the segments evaluatively\. . . Zoom is the project's current meeting platform, but that can change. The project's cloud drive is [here](https://mega.nz/folder/vqJCXIQJ#muxiUXMHhfljvxKnWaOxZA), at which you'll find the reading texts, notes, and slideshows.

Recovering The Way: A fusion of Qigong, Western Medicinal Theory and 12-Step
Recovering The Way: A fusion of Qigong, Western Medicinal Theory and 12-Step
I'm Dan Weicher, developer of Recovering the Way, which is a fusion of qigong, the Scientific Method and 12-step. Some time after coming into a 12 step program I met with Dr. Roger Jahnke OMD of The Institute Of Integral Qigong, It started a long and deep learning experience of integrating the principles of Internal Alchemy into my life. I realized pretty soon that the 12-step paradigm was also one of Alchemy, and the two of them worked well together. You might be saying, “That’s really nice for you, Dan, but I'm not interested in meditation", or "That’s really nice for you, Dan, I don't need a program for addiction" Bu there's a new pathology in the world now now that tis coming directly at us. And I don’t just mean the pandemic of the COVID virus. I'm talking about, if you a virus of freneticism that has overtaken us like a tsunami. We all have addictive tendencies, and just like gene expression, certain environmental phenomena can bring to surface the dis-ease. And it’s nearly impossible for us to avoid the effects of the new world of electronic phenomena and it is laying bare the compulsive, addictive parts of our personalities. Where people may not have considered themselves dependent, it’s being laid bare now for us. So, why this fusion? Just as Chinese medicine is a paradigm for healing and Western medicine is a paradigm for healing, the 12-Step process is a paradigm for healing. The fusion of the paradigms is how I healed and it can work for you too. I've seen in recovery circles that there are many people who have come to grips with a lot of their pressing issues but they're still very rife and tense, as if the body won't stop being in a state of excitation. I've also seen many people come into yoga or meditation class expecting for the addictive or compulsive part of their personality to abate and subside. It doesn’t necessarily always work. Recovering The Way is advantageous for those people who might be looking to see how they can integrate themselves better into today’s life. The practice is in the format of a Qigong Class, incorporating parts of the Tai Chi Easy program and Integral Qigong. No experience is necessary, it is pleasing, almost effortless and can be done seated, standing or just listening. Seasoned practitioners and novices each find it beneficial. We have amongst us Physicians, Scientists, Doctors of Oriental Medicine, Teachers and people from all walks of life and all ages. It is easy seamless and graspable to just about anybody. We bring into the body aspects of mind that allude us and visa versa. By integrating simplified Qigong (gentle movement, breath regulation, meditation and self massage), with simplified Recovery principles (self awareness of conduct and thought) we attain a level of internal harmony that may surprise us. This is all done under the backdrop a simple understanding of the most modern aspects of human physiology. In lay terms we are given valuable information on how the brain, the blood and or bodies interact. Daniel Weicher Founder Recovering The Way Qigong A fusion of Healing Paradigms

This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism") Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war). Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering? See you at Drunken Philosophy!
