Day trip by train - visit historic Hertford!
Day trip by train - visit historic Hertford!
Come along on Saturday 18th April to visit the historic town of Hertford! **About Hertford** Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire. Its only 20 miles north of central London and only has a population of 30,000. The town grew up on a ford on the River Lea in 913AD where the Rivers Rib, Beane and Mimram join the Lea. Its name comes from the Old English word '*Herut*', meaning a fully mature stag; thus the meaning of the name is a ford where stags are found. The town has a castle (now just a gatehouse remaining) built by the Normans in the 11th century. In 1563, Parliament met at the castle because of an outbreak of plague in London. Its most famous resident was Samuel Stone, who was born here in 1602 and later emigrated to America. He was instrumental in developing the community he settled in into a city, renaming it Hartford (in the state of Connecticut today), after his birthplace. From the 18th century onwards, the town prospered as a market town, with many warehouses and trade on the river. The town has lots of medieval, Georgian and Victorian properties, along with a local museum. **Cost** The guided tour is £8 per person (payable on the day by cash, credit card, PayPal or Bank Transfer). 🦢 NEW Walking Among Swans: Abbotsbury & Weymouth Day Trip
################# **This trip is now full, but there's still time to join us this Sunday for a trip to Wales!** 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 **👉 Book your spot here:** [https://www.meetup.com/londonsocialhiking/events/313927812/](https://www.meetup.com/londonsocialhiking/events/313927812/) **We’ve created a list of [FAQs](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e4VGmwhurmCng2cY3ZJHOS4j9ZlWKaX1/view?usp=sharing) to help answer your questions.** ################# Join us on a new **wildlife trip** to the **world's only managed colony of Mute Swans**! I visited the Swannery last year and was so captivated that I knew I had to organise this trip for the group – something fresh and truly special, even for those of you who have been on many trips before. Nestled in a picturesque setting alongside Fleet Lagoon on the stunning Jurassic Coast, **Abbotsbury Swannery** is widely regarded as one of Dorset's most unforgettable wildlife experiences. **April is a magical time to visit:** the swannery is at the height of its nesting season, with hundreds of Mute Swans incubating their eggs. You will have the rare privilege of **walking among them and their nests remarkably close** – an experience that never fails to leave a lasting impression! The **daily mass swan feeding** **takes place at noon** and you're very welcome to take part and feed the swans yourself. With **up to 600 Mute Swans** jostling and flapping for their share, it is an unforgettable spectacle. The swannery has a rich and fascinating history, having been founded over **600 years ago by Benedictine monks** who originally bred the swans for food. Today the swans are fully protected. Film enthusiasts may also recognise the site from its appearance in ***Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince***. After visiting the swannery, we'll head to the popular **seaside resort town of Weymouth** for lunch. You'll have free time to explore its picturesque historic harbour, stroll along the beautiful **three-mile sandy Weymouth Beach**, recognised as one of the best in the UK, and simply relax by the sea. Finally, we'll head to see the **huge chalk figure** carved into the hillside, depicting King George III on his horse. Weymouth was the king's favourite holiday destination, and his patronage transformed the town into a fashionable resort that did much to popularise sea bathing among the upper classes. This trip is a **relaxed day out and suitable for everyone** – it's a great chance to experience new places that we normally don't have time for on our hikes! 🤩 **ITINERARY** **07:45** Meet outside Hotel Novotel London West, 1 Shortlands, W6 8DR (a five-minute walk from Hammersmith Station) **08:00** Sharp departure **11:15-13:00** Abbotsbury Swannery – home to the world's only managed colony of Mute Swans. Wander among hundreds of swans and their nests, and take part in the daily feeding. **13:30-15:30** Enjoy lunch at your leisure in the charming seaside resort town of Weymouth. Explore the historic harbour, stroll the Georgian seafront or simply relax on the sandy beach. **15:45** Photo stop at Osmington White Horse – the magnificent chalk figure of King George III on horseback, carved into the hillside **19:00** London, Hammersmith **TRANSPORT** As on most of our trips, we'll travel in a comfortable 16-seater minibus. **SAFETY** This trip is led by an experienced, Outdoor First Aid qualified hike leader. **BOOKING** To keep ticket prices down and avoid PayPal/Meetup fees (£7 extra per ticket), we kindly ask for payment by bank transfer. How to Take Control of YOUR Mental Health
How to Take Control of YOUR Mental Health
It’s time to take control of your mental health. How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself. Here is the secret of being positive and free: Thinking positively is not enough. You also have to get rid of the negative thinking. Your mind is like a garden. You can plant many beautiful flowers in it, but if you don't get rid of the weeds when you plant your flowers, the weeds will soon take over the whole garden. A positive thought is like a flower in your mental garden, and a negative thought is like a weed. You cannot expect to have a positive mindset if you continue to have negative thoughts dwelling and growing there. So, how do you get rid of the negative thoughts? That's what this Meetup is all about. Attend this local meeting and find out! The Meetup event will be led by a consultant who had helped many people live happier in life. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is created by the Dianetics & Scientology life improvement center.
Hike Pickerington Ponds
Hike Pickerington Ponds
We'll hike 3.4 miles on the Killdeer and Yellowlegs Trails - both out and back gravel trails. If we want more mileage we can repeat an out and back. Pace of around 3.5 mph, no one left behind and those who want to go faster sure can! As always optional lunch after. This is the second Metro Park in the lineup for me - with 21 to go (plus more are being added).
