Details on getting tickets for Slither + pre drinks below. PREMISE Slither takes place in a quiet South Carolina town where a meteorite containing an alien parasite crash lands, eventually infecting local resident Grant Grant (played by Gunn mainstay Michael Rooker, and no, Grant Grant is not a typo). The creature gradually takes over Grant’s body and mind, who is compelled to feast on raw meat and infect others. Grant’s wife Starla (Elizabeth Banks) and the town sheriff Bill Pardy (Nathan Fillion) eventually tie several disappearances to him, though nothing can prepare them for what they discover. James Gunn never truly achieved large-scale audience recognition until his revered work on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy film, which owes its success first and foremost to Gunn’s style and vision, seamlessly combining dark, irreverent humour, action and emotional depth. However, Slither is Gunn’s directorial debut, and thus is the first time he proved himself to be a one-two-punch auteur whose snappy writing pairs well with his directorial sensibilities, proving that he was producing the goods long before Guardians catapulted him to the upper echelons of mainstream cinema. Perhaps the most notable distinction from his major budget work with Marvel and Slither is the latter’s unabashed B-movie undertones. I am hesitant to label this a zombie movie, yet there is a touch of the mad scientist to Gunn as he splices hints of Roger Corman’s deliberate schlock with George A. Romero’s approach to the undead. However, unlike Romero’s best works, thematic subtext can get somewhat lost in the mix as I could only pick up on allusions to domestic abuse, which even then lacks the necessary conviction. It is instead Gunn’s comprehension of his characters, and the situations in which they find themselves, that is one of his best assets as a filmmaker. With surprising patience for a comedy horror, Gunn dials up the obscene notch by notch until it reaches eleven, at which point Fillion’s Bill dryly remarks “Well now, that is some fucked up shit.” At that very moment, Gunn’s character echoed what I, and likely many other audience members, were thinking, proving that he is indeed on a similar wavelength to his target audience, something I greatly admire in any filmmaker. However, occasionally flat cinematography can distract from the otherwise gleeful horror onscreen, perhaps the only aspect of Slither which veers all too close to the B-movies it seeks to emulates, though it is forgivably offset by sharply written characters and an impressive cast. Take Michael Rooker’s Grant, who is an undeniable jerk, yet Gunn’s sympathetic framing of the character adds depth you simply would not find in a B-movie lacking any sense of nuance. Meanwhile, Edmonton native Nathan Fillion shows impressive comedic timing while proving that he has the chops to lead a film on the big screen, which makes his diminished presence in films over the years even more baffling. Slither is a horror film which showcases all the best hallmarks of James Gunn as a filmmaker, albeit in a manner less refined than his best work on Guardians of the Galaxy. While the influence of genre greats are obvious, Gunn’s directorial debut is nonetheless a marriage of comedy and horror that is all its own, whilst delivering the absurd with the emotional in a manner you don’t often see, but is sure to split some sides…though hopefully not as literally as in the film ([https://hnmag.ca/review/slither-review/](https://hnmag.ca/review/slither-review/)) TRAILER [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI0BcgVdSWg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SI0BcgVdSWg) CINEMA TICKETS £14 regular or £11 for PCC members. April's first Science Fiction meetup.
April's first Science Fiction meetup.
Would you enjoy a relaxed evening with fellow Science Fiction and Fantasy fans? If so, we’d love to meet you. Our next gathering takes place on **Saturday 11th April from 6pm** at **The Mad Hatter**, just by Blackfriars Bridge. Drop in, say hello, and join us for a drink. We’re a long‑running group that’s been meeting since **1998**—long before meetup sites existed. Over the years we’ve hosted celebrity meet‑and‑greets, attended conventions together, run role‑playing games, organised cinema trips, LARPs, and plenty more. These pub meetups are all about socialising and connecting with other Sci‑Fi and Fantasy enthusiasts. To help break the ice, we’ll be running a fun **team quiz at 8.30pm**. There’s no fee to attend—just pay for whatever food or drink you order at the venue.

1066 Country: Battling from Battle to Rye
1066 Country: Battling from Battle to Rye
The clocks are finally going back and hopefully Spring will finally have sprung in time for our next walk - a corker of a 13-mile (21km) stride along the 1066 Country Walk from Battle to Rye. The number 1066 of course signifying what still remains the most significant thing to have in this part of the world in the ensuing milennium: the invasion of William, Duke of Normandy, and his defeat of the Anglo-Saxon king Harald at the Battle of Hastings. Which happened not at Hastings, but at Battle, conveniently enough. This walk will lead us the other way from Battle station, eastwards through marvellously bucolic territory of woods, pasture and small valleys and as we head for the Brede Levels and the tiny, mysterious planned mediaeval town of Winchelsea as we head for our finishing point at the chocolate-box ex-port of Rye. One innovation since Norman times: pubs. There are some lovely ones on the way, one of which we'll stop at for lunch and we'll aim for at least another in the afternoon. Marvellous - see you there! As ever I'll get group tickets for those who need it once we're assembled at Charing Cross on the day.

Free Human Towers Rehearsal + Social (Sunday)
Free Human Towers Rehearsal + Social (Sunday)
Sunday rehearsal with Castellers of London. Meet us at the OBC Community Centre to help build human towers! This get together is a great opportunity for you to meet new friends, socialise and have a go and explore your abilities as a human tower builder a.k.a Casteller! For newcomers we have a team of trained Castellers who will introduce you to the group, guide you through the activity and help you safely take part in this unique Catalan tradition. When you arrive just approach us as we are really friendly! If in doubt ask for Cuss! Please let us know if you are bringing guests. After the rehearsal we go to a nearby pub for social drinks where everyone is welcome :) What do you need? 1. Ideally a cotton shirt: to protect your neck and shoulders, the more durable the shirt/top the better. We do not recommend any thin items of clothing! 2. Jeans: allowing you to move freely without breaking. 3. Mask: We still require the use of a mask as you will be very close to your fellow Castellers - basically you will be hugging people! The rest of the equipment is on us! We take health and safety very seriously, both in relation to COVID-19 and also the activity- please be assured that the safety of all participants is of the utmost importance to us and we take all necessary precautions to minimize the risk, ensuring we all have a great time! Our regular members won't be filling in the Meet Up to say they are going 🙂 So don't be put off if you see only a handful have said they are going. A minimum of 25 on the day is normal. What the Meet Up may show is how many new people like yourself are going.

Book Bedazzling (BYOB) - Bloodguard by Cecy Robson
Let's bedazzle some books while we discuss our April pick: Bloodguard by Cecy Robson! Book description: One hundred years. Tens of thousands of gladiators. And today, only one will rise… Everything in the Kingdom of Arrow is a lie. Leith of Grey thought coming to this new land and volunteering to fight in the gladiator arena—vicious, bloodthirsty tournaments where only the strongest survive—would earn him enough gold to save his dying sister. He thought there was nothing left to lose. He was wrong—and they took everything. His hope. His freedom. His very humanity. All Leith has left is his battle-scarred body, fueled by rage and hardened from years of fighting for the right to live another day. Then Leith meets Maeve, an elven royal who is everything he despises. Everything he should hate. Until the alluring princess offers him the one thing he needs most: a chance to win the coveted title of Bloodguard—and his freedom. But in a kingdom built on secrets and lies, hope doesn’t come cheap. Nor will his ultimate revenge… Event: Please bring your own book, journal, bookmarks, etc to bedazzle. If you have bedazzling supplies, please bring them as well. I will supply gems, glue, and picker tools, but if you have certain colors in mind, you may want to bring your own.

Disc Tues / Choose Your Movie: THE CHRISTOPHERS vs NORMAL at the Gateway!
Disc Tues / Choose Your Movie: THE CHRISTOPHERS vs NORMAL at the Gateway!
Join us as we get together for a Discount Tuesday / Choose Your Movie event to see your choice of two great new films! Option 1 (and the one I'll be seeing) is the top-reviewed comedy-drama, THE CHRISTOPHERS! The film is set in the art world and follows the estranged children of a former artist who hire a forger. It is directed by Steven Soderberg, stars Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel and has been earning rave reviews on the indie circuit. Option 2 is the latest action-thriller starring Bob Odenkirk, NORMAL! The film follows a temporary small-town sheriff who uncovers dark mysteries after a local bank robbery. Here are descriptions, trailers and our plan for this event: THE CHRISTOPHERS: The children of a once famous artist hire a forger to complete some unfinished, long ago abandoned canvases so they'll have a better inheritance when he dies. It is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning and James Corden. BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film is earning an excellent 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes where critics call it a “dynamic, emotional and surprising journey” and a “compelling chamber piece that works like intellectual comfort food.” Others call the film, an “incredibly funny, comedy drama with plot reversals that make it feel like it’s on the verge of a thriller!” TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H79-EqzmdwY&t=20s NORMAL: This action-crime-thriller follows a man who comes to the sleepy town of Normal, Minnesota to serve as the temporary sheriff. But a bank robbery leads him to a criminal underground reaches throughout the entire town. The film is directed by Ben Wheatley and stars Bob Odenkirk, Henry Winkler and Lena Headey. The film comes from the same team that brought us Nobody and the John Wick series, so expect an over-the-top, action-filled thrill ride! TRAILER: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rmm-lM33Qw0&t=19s PLAN: We’ll plan for a 7pm-ish showing of both films and will meet in the lobby area about 30 minutes before showtime. Once showtimes are announced, advance ticket purchase is advised (GFC website preferred)! Please list your movie of choice and seat number in the Comments section of this event. Showtimes and complete details will be confirmed/announced as the date gets closer. PARKING: Close, convenient parking is available in the nearby garage (located between 9th and 11th, just off High St). Bring your ticket with you and have it validated at the theater and for $2, you’re covered for the night! Look forward to seeing you there, Dan
