Brain Worms 116 / The Aleph and Other Stories by Jorge Luis Borges
Written in a deceptively simple, almost laconic style Borges takes us inside the minds of an unrepentant Nazi, an imprisoned Mayan priest, fanatical Christian theologians, a woman plotting vengeance on her father’s “killer,” and a man awaiting his assassin in a Buenos Aires guest house. In maddeningly ingenious stories that play with the very form of the short story, Borges returns again and again to his themes: dreams, labyrinths, mirrors, infinite libraries, the manipulations of chance, gaucho knife-fighters, transparent tigers and the elusive nature of identity itself.
We will be reading the Penguin edition of The Aleph and Other Stories which contains the following stories:
"The Immortal" ("El inmortal")
"The Dead Man" ("El Muerto")
"The Theologians" ("Los teólogos")
"Story of the Warrior and the Captive" ("Historia del guerrero y la cautiva")
"Biography of Tadeo Isidoro Cruz" ("Biografía de Tadeo Isidoro Cruz (1829–1874)")
"Emma Zunz"
"The House of Asterion" ("La casa de Asterión")
"The Other Death" ("La otra muerte")
"Deutsches Requiem" ("Deutsches réquiem")
"Averroes's Search" ("La busca de Averroes")
"The Zahir" ("El zahir")
"The Writing of the God" ("La escritura del dios")
"Ibn-Hakam al-Bokhari, Murdered in His Labyrinth" ("Abenjacán el Bojarí, muerto en su laberinto")
"The Two Kings and the Two Labyrinths" ("Una leyenda arábiga" ("Historia de los dos reyes y los dos laberintos, como nota de Burton") ) "The Wait" ("La espera")
"The Man on the Threshold" ("El hombre en el umbral")
"The Aleph" ("El Aleph")
Available from all good libraries and book shops.
You don't have to have read it to join us - but it'll probably help.

London Philosophy Cafe - Morality of beauty
**Morality of Beauty**
What if we saw beauty not as decoration, but as a way of encountering reality? Today, it’s often reduced to a commodity—raising a deeper question: what does our relationship to beauty reveal about us?
We live in an image-saturated world, yet often remain untouched by the beauty around us. Perhaps we resist being changed, or haven’t learned to look beyond first impressions.
Yet beauty is not entirely innocent—it can reveal truth, but also mislead. Must we, then, learn to approach it with care?
This discussion explores both its power and its risk
**Event details **
We have reserved the Chicester Room in ther pub for us . Please ask for Philosophy cafe at the door and they will direct you .
We like to break into small groups and have a healthy discussion about life , philosophy and ideas .
We break out into groups of 6 to discuss three questions over 45min to 1 hour; and then spend another 45min feeding back into the main group. The three topics are chosen on the day by vote, and largely derived from suggestions on the day.
We welcome new ideas , so please come up with suggestions or topics that you want to talk about .
There is no specific topic list and you do not need to read or know anything particular about philosophy .
The official time is 7-9: 30 pm , but we usually go into a pub mode after 9:30 pm and continue our discusssions.

We usually sit in the back of the pub. If the weather is nice we may sit outside at the back of the pub, or even outside on the downstairs floor.

Note: This is not a book club.
Also, the TCR bar is kind enough to allow us to use their space to host this meetup, and has asked if possible for attendees to support the venue by purchasing a drink or food while you're there. Please don't bring your own food or drink to consume at the venue, as the venue does not allow this!

🏍️🎬 AKIRA (NEW 4K PRESENTATION)
☠️🌃 ***This is where the cyberpunk era begins… and where Neo-Tokyo is about to E.X.P.L.O.D.E.***
**Hello Everyone**👋 Back in 1988, **Katsuhiro Otomo** predicted what life might look like in 2019 through this landmark cyberpunk classic. I guess we're not far off as the film blends futuristic technology, including artificial intelligence and cyberware, with a society on the brink of collapse, creating a world shaped by dystopia, unrest, and decay.
The film is set in dystopian Neo-Tokyo, 31 years after a psychic explosion destroyed the city, and follows teenage biker Kaneda as his friend Tetsuo develops terrifying telekinetic powers after a secret government experiment, triggering a spiral of violence, conspiracy, and destruction.
We’ll meet at **Victoria House Wine Bar** for drinks before heading over to the **Prince Charles Cinema (Screen 1)**. I’ll be in **seat F9**, but feel free to sit wherever you like. After the film, we’ll catch up briefly and post our thoughts for our **[Letterboxd Page](https://letterboxd.com/movieroadhouse/).**
Time for a chilled cyberpunk Sunday.
**See you guys there,**

Deeper Discussions - Fiction Book Club 📚💬
Join us for a special edition of Deeper Discussions, where we dive into thought-provoking **fiction** that challenges perspectives, sparks imagination, and opens doors to meaningful conversations. Whether you're a lifelong reader or rediscovering the joy of novels, this is a space to explore stories that stay with you long after the final page.
**This Month's Book - One hundred years of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez**
One Hundred Years of Solitude follows generations of the Buendía family in the fictional town of Macondo.
It blends everyday life with magical, surreal events in a dreamlike style.
The story explores time, memory, and the repeating patterns of family life.
**How does it work?**
* Brief introductions and reflections on what struck you most
* Moderated discussion exploring plot, themes, and characters
* Open conversation where different interpretations are welcomed ️
* We wrap up by sharing insights and connections made
**What to Expect?**
**Close Reading:** We go beyond surface-level plot summary. Expect discussions that examine the author's choices, narrative techniques, and the questions left lingering in the silence between pages.
**Thoughtful Dialogue:** This isn't a race to share opinions—it's a space for genuine exploration. We listen, we reflect, we build on each other's insights.
**Meaningful Connections:** Great fiction holds up a mirror to the human experience. Through discussing characters' choices and moral dilemmas, we often discover something about ourselves and each other.
**How to get the most out of this event?**
**Finish the Book:** Please attend only if you've completed the book. Spoilers will flow freely, and the richest discussions come from those who've made the full journey.
**Ground it in the Text:** Bring your interpretations, but anchor them in what's actually on the page. Quote passages. Reference scenes. Let the author's words guide us.
**Respect & Openness:** Every interpretation matters. Make space for quieter voices. Challenge ideas, not people. Stay curious rather than defensive.
**Why a Fiction Book Club?**
**Explore the Human Condition:** Fiction lets us inhabit lives we'll never live, forcing us to confront questions about identity, morality, love, and loss.
**Sharpen Your Thinking:** Close reading develops critical thinking—noticing what the author chose to include, exclude, and how the story is told matters as much as what happens.
**Deepen Connections:** Discussing characters' choices and moral dilemmas creates surprisingly intimate conversations with fellow readers.
**Who is this event for?**
* You find yourself thinking about books long after you've finished them
* You want more from book discussions than "I liked it" or "I didn't"
* You're curious how others interpret the same story differently
* You value thoughtful dialogue over debate ️✨
* You're looking for meaningful connections with fellow readers
**What's in it for you?**
* **Fresh Perspectives:** Discover interpretations you'd never have considered alone
* **Deeper Understanding:** Unpack themes and symbols that enrich your reading
* **Genuine Connection:** Bond with others over shared literary experiences
* **A Space to Think:** Slow down from the noise and engage with ideas that matter
**Ready to dive deeper into stories that matter?**
Join us for an evening where fiction becomes a gateway to understanding ourselves and each other. ✨
**We really hope to see you there!**

Bad Girls Book Club April 2026
**Our April novel is: *The Hong Kong Widow* by Kristen Loesch**
**This month’s novel blends gothic atmosphere with historical fiction and chilling horror, set against the haunting backdrop of China. The book is 368 pages in print and 10 hours and 42 minutes on audiobook.**
In 1950s Hong Kong, Mei is a young refugee of the Chinese Communist revolution struggling to put her past in Shanghai behind her. When she receives a shocking invitation—to take part in a competition in one of the city's most notorious haunted houses, pitting six spirit mediums against one another in a series of six séances over six nights, until a single winner emerges—she has every reason to refuse.
Except that the hostess, a former Shanghainese silent film star, is none other than the wife of the man who once destroyed Mei’s entire life.
It is promised the winner will receive a fortune, but there is only one prize Mei wants: revenge.
Decades later, the final night of that competition has become an infamous urban legend: The police were called to the scene of a brutal massacre but found no evidence, dismissing it as a collective hallucination. Mei knows what she saw, but now someone else is convinced they know what she did. She must uncover the truth about the last night she ever spent in that house—even if the ghosts of her past are waiting for her there. . . .
