Discussion: "How to look upon an exhaling universe?"
Discussion: "How to look upon an exhaling universe?"
***Are there fundamentally different ways of looking at the world?*** *Do different intellectual cultures - such as the arts and the sciences - embody these perspectives? Should they be in greater dialogue, or left to their own devices?* In this session of **Marginal Thoughts**, we will explore what happens when different intellectual cultures confront the same phenomenon - namely, the cheery prospect of the heat death of the universe. Before expending our breath on these questions, we'll read three short pieces: * A short story by Ted Chiang: ["Exhalation"](https://on-air.caricomassimo.org/media/pages/airchive/exhalation/392873ce00-1715897949/exhalation-tedchiang.pdf) (alternative: [audio version](https://archive.org/details/ExhalationByTedChiang); \~30 min read) * An essay by C. P. Snow: ["The Two Cultures"](https://archive.is/HMIMI) (\~20 min) * A poem by Neil Rollinson: ["Entropy"](https://poetryarchive.org/poem/entropy/) (\~2 min) In these, Ted Chiang trolls his readers into becoming aware of their own breathing, C. P. Snow leaves both artists and scientists feeling self-consciously uncultured, and Neil Rollinson subtly suggests that poetry doesn't pay well enough to cover energy bills or stave off entropy. **How to prepare** Please read all the materials in advance. As you do, try to identify at least one point of curiosity, confusion, or uncertainty - these will be natural starting points for our discussion. **What to expect** This is an in-person, conversational meetup in English. The goal isn't to debate, lecture, or "confess" - it’s to explore ideas and leave with better questions than we arrived with. **Optional stuff for the extra curious** The Ted Chiang story is a part of the collection ["Exhalation: Stories"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exhalation:_Stories). C. P. Snow's "The Two Cultures" was later expanded into a lecture and then a short book ["The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Two_Cultures). For those interested in going further, possible follow-ups on entropy include [this short essay](https://www.edge.org/response-detail/27023) by Steven Pinker and [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxL2HoqLbyA) by Veritasium.

Walk & Talk Wien
Walk & Talk Wien
**ACHTUNG! **Do you speak English? Then welcome to Walk & Talk!** This event is suited for all people who like to connect to other people and like to walk. The beauty of this regular event is that you are in the nature and you walk around 7 kilometers. In the meantime, if you feel for it, you talk, if not, you just walk. You do something for your health, get to know new people and you will feel much better. It’s FREE, all you need to do is to show up this Tuesday at no later than 1 pm at the U6 Spittelau exit to Donaukanal.

After each focus session, if you’re still in the flow, feel free to remain seated — no need to move. If you're up for a chat, join others in the social area for a relaxed break. * **Social start**: from **1:00 to 1:28 PM**, we mingle and get to know each other; our first focus session begins at **1:30 PM** * **Gentle structure**: we begin with a soft check-in and intention round * **Pomodoro-style rhythm**: We work in 45-minute focus blocks followed by 15-minute social breaks. If 45 minutes feels too long, feel free to break it into two 20-minute focus sessions with a short 5-minute reset in between. You’ll need to self-regulate these shorter cycles, just tune into your own flow and rejoin when ready. * **Quiet companionship**: no pressure to talk during focus time — just shared presence and support * **Welcoming space**: we meet in the creative, cozy lobby of the **Jaz in the City** 💡 **New to Pomodoro?** Don’t worry — we’ll guide you gently. Meaningful Connections
*A gentle gathering for friendship, love, and real human depth* **Genuine connection can sometimes feel rare.** We meet many people. We exchange words. We scroll, we swipe. You may leave with a new acquaintance, a spark, or simply the quiet reassurance that depth still exists. For women and men 40+. Limited group size to maintain quality and balance. I look forward to welcoming you. Warmly, Dieter PS: A contribution of €25 will be collected to cover the costs, like sandwiches, drinks, cookies, coffee, tea, and room . Open Dialogue – Discovering Together in Vienna
We will meet in a calm and friendly place ( Parc, Café, Restaurant) to explore together some of Jiddu Krishnamurti’s key questions about awareness, relationship, and freedom. There will be no teaching, no authority — only open dialogue and attentive listening. Everyone is welcome, whether you are familiar with Jiddu Krishnamurti or simply curious about life and self-understanding. We’ll start with an open conversation around a theme such as “Listening without judgment” or “Can thought bring clarity?” Please bring openness, curiosity, and a readiness to listen — no books or notes needed. CBusData: The Fellowship of the Star Schema: Transforming OLTP Data for Power BI
The Fellowship of the Star Schema: Transforming OLTP Data for Power BI One does not simply build reports on OLTP data. Join us on an epic journey from the depths of raw, normalized tables to the shining halls of a well-modeled star schema fit for Power BI greatness. We will demystify the differences between OLTP and OLAP, walk through star schema vs snowflake (and why Power BI has a clear favorite), and show you the compression differences between normalized and columnar storage that will make you never look at an OLTP model the same way again. We will cover the different types of dimensions, when to use them, and how to handle Slowly Changing Dimensions without losing your mind. You will leave knowing exactly how to identify a bad model, how to convert OLTP data into a clean star schema, and how to forge relationships that rule them all. Whether you are a data wizard, a curious hobbit, or somewhere in between, your models will never be the same.

Mental Health, how do you understand it? How can you improve it? How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself. Have you ever suffered from a traumatic experience, a deep loss or been through a painful breakup? Has your ability to communicate suffered as a result? And after that, even though you "moved on" did you find that things were never quite the same? Have you ever looked at childhood photos, or reminisced your early life and wondered where that happiness and spark went? Are your emotions out of your own control? Have you ever felt, even if you aren’t aware of it, that possibly you are getting in your own way of your happiness and success? How does this affect your self-confidence? Find out what is at the root of all stress, anxiety, depression and self-doubt. Find out how and why you hold yourself back from achieving your goals and having the life you have dreamed of.
