Practice German Online! Intermediate & Advanced Level (B2-C1)
Practice German Online! Intermediate & Advanced Level (B2-C1)
You are studying German but you don't get a chance to practice speaking? In our conversation class you can practice and fine tune your German in a structured class, guided by an experienced German teacher. Get the Berlin Connection membership https://berlinconnection.io/ for up to 5 conversation classes per week, podcasts worksheets and writing practice. Our plans are 40 EUR for a monthly membership, 80 EUR for a quarterly membership, 240 for a yearly membership. Or: Try one class here for 5 EUR. It's a great chance to practice your German, develop your conversation skills and meet interesting people. A positive and supportive ambiance will make you talk better in no time. Improved fluency and pronunciation, an extended vocabulary and personal feedback will give you confidence in future conversations in your job or private life. How does it work online? Please take time at least 10 minutes before the event to pay and register for an account at http://zoom.us (in case you don't have one already). In each session we have a new topic and will tackle a variety of vocabulary. We will use the breakout feature of Zoom. You will get different discussion points and speak one-on-one with 3-4 other German learners in a separate chat room. After around 5-10 minutes I'll join your room and you'll give me an account of your conversation. I'll then correct your German and give you personalized feedback. After that you'll be assigned to a new group and discuss a new point. Are there requirements? If you already started B2 - you are ready! Why is there a fee? Hosting a meetup is not free. The €5 fee covers the Meetup organizer fee, the zoom membership fee, the preparation and the teaching of the class. Note: This meetup is part of a network with more members on other platforms. The number of attendees indicated here is not the actual number! Feel free to contact me if you should have any questions. I'm looking forward to seeing you! Nadine

B-Minus Fridays!
B-Minus Fridays!
Down in Front moved over to Twitch at the beginning of the Pandemic, and quickly became a weekly, unscripted show we affectionally refer to as "B-Minus" (as in, the movies we watch are B-movies or worse). We've run the gamut of hidden gems from overproduced to charmingly inept, from painfully bad to so-bad-it's-good, and somehow time continued passing and 100 shows somehow just zipped by. we'll be at www.Twitch.tv/downinfrontlive starting at 8 for a Cinematic Rehabilitation you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home, from the comfort of our homes.

Live-Reading Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics – American Style
Live-Reading Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics – American Style
Let's try something new. For the next dozen weeks or so, starting 4/17/2022, we are going to live-read and discuss Aristotle's \~*Nicomachean Ethics*\~. What is new and different about this project is that the translation, by Adam Beresford (2020), happens to be rendered in standard 'Murican English. . From the translator's "Note" on the text: . "This translation is conservative in interpretation and traditional in aim. It aims to translate the text as accurately as possible. . "I translated every page from scratch, from a clean Greek text, rather than revising an existing translation. ... I wanted to avoid the scholars’ dialect that is traditionally used for translating Aristotle. ... "I reject the approach of Arthur Adkins, Elizabeth Anscombe, and others who followed Nietzsche in supposing that the main elements of modern thinking about right and wrong were unknown to the Greeks, or known to them only in some radically different form. My view of humanity and of our shared moral instincts is shaped by a newer paradigm. This is a post-Darwinian translation. (It is also more in line with the older, both Aristotelian and Christian view of human character.) . "Having said that, I have no interest at all in modernizing Aristotle’s ideas. All the attitudes of this treatise remain fully Greek, very patriarchal, somewhat aristocratic, and firmly embedded in the fourth century BC. My choice of dialect (standard English) has no bearing on that whatsoever. (It is perfectly possible to express distinctively Greek and ancient attitudes in standard English.) ... I have also not simplified the text in any way. I have translated every iota, particle, preposition, noun, verb, adjective, phrase, clause, and sentence of the original. Every premise and every argument therefore remains – unfortunately – exactly as complex and annoyingly difficult as in any other version in whatever dialect. ... "Some scholars and students unwarily assume that the traditional dialect has a special connection with Greek and that using it brings readers closer to the original text; and that it makes the translation more accurate. In reality, it has no special tie to the Greek language, either in its main philosophical glossary or in its dozens of minor (and pointless) deviations from normal English. And in my view it certainly makes any translation much less accurate. . "I will occasionally refer to the scholars’ dialect (‘Gringlish’) and its traditional glossary in the Notes." . . Here is our plan: 1\. Read Intro excerpts or a summary to gain the big picture\. 2\. Read a segment of the translated text\. 3\. Discuss it analytically and interpretively\. 4\. Repeat again at \#2 for several more times\. 5\. Discuss the segments evaluatively\. . . Zoom is the project's current meeting platform, but that can change. The project's cloud drive is [here](https://mega.nz/folder/vqJCXIQJ#muxiUXMHhfljvxKnWaOxZA), at which you'll find the reading texts, notes, and slideshows.
NEW Zoom ID# : Game Night - No praying required
NEW Zoom ID# : Game Night - No praying required
Code Names is the game of choice for the next few meetings. We open at 6:30 so that newcomers can have time for a tutorial; the first game starts promptly at 7 pm. It ends when the group agrees—typically around 9—there’s no definite end time. If you log-in late, you can always cheer the players on and still be able to play in the second game of the night. This is a virtual meeting but this doesn't mean the beer has to be virtual - so be sure to sip a nice ale (or whatever you enjoy) as you participate. No prizes for winning but the honor of doing so can be overwhelming. (This event is cross-listed and not being led or organized by [Atheists United](http://www.atheistsunited.org/) staff/volunteers)
Now STREAMING on YouTube! The Documentary Film "The Phenomenon Bruno Gröning"!
Now STREAMING on YouTube! The Documentary Film "The Phenomenon Bruno Gröning"!
The Documentary film "The Phenomenon Bruno Gröning" -- (On the Tracks of the "Miracle Healer") is now permanently streaming on YouTube! It chronicles the life, work, and teaching of Bruno Gröning. In 1949 the name Bruno Gröning dominated the headlines. Everywhere that he appeared, hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of people flocked to see him. They came from all over the world including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, France, and even the USA. Those who flocked to see him, were sick & injured people. For many it was their last ray of hope. Beaten down by the war, given up on by doctors, they had only one wish, to become healthy again and be free from pain and suffering. Bruno Gröning could help them, and he did! "There is no incurable -- God is the greatest physician!" were his words. Then the unfathomable happened: innumerable people became healthy again! THE DOCUMENTARY FILM: "THE PHENOMENON BRUNO GRöNING" On the Tracks of the "Miracle Healer" The film shows the dramatic events of that time objectively. The film includes original footage and sound, archived material, over 50 eyewitness interviews, and large-scale re-enactment scenes. All of these aspects make the film a deeply impressive experience. This film, however, is more than a documented glimpse into the past. Many viewers have reported that they suddenly felt a power, a tingling, a current running in their bodies while watching the film. For most of them, this is a completely new experience. Some have even reported the disappearance of pain, handicaps, and other forms of suffering. How is that possible when Bruno Gröning died in 1959? The tumult over him has long since past but even today, unusual healings occur through this teaching. Healings from cancer, angina pectoris, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis, as well as healing from drug and other addictions have occurred. These successes have also been documented & verified by medical physicians. Below is a trailer for the film and a 30-minute documentary celebrating the 10th anniversary of the film, as well as links to the entire film in various languages. Currently, introductions are being held over the phone, one on one. After attending an in person or over the phone introduction, you can then attend our regular meetings where we practice the teaching and share our experiences. Of course, our regular in person meetings are temporarily also on hold, but we are able to meet online through our web portal, which you can register for after your formal introduction. We hope to see you in person or online, soon! Wishing you all the best, Tony Group Organizer

Drunken Philosophy: What’s up with all the AI hate?
Drunken Philosophy: What’s up with all the AI hate?
**Welcome to Drunken Philosophy** a casual, curious social discussion **Optional topic for this meetup: What's up with all the AI hate?** A recent survey found that 74% of Americans have a negative view of AI, and I want to know why. Come out and debate whether AI is good or bad. My hot take: a labor-saving tool that could potentially help cure cancer gets called dangerous because it might raise unemployment or cause a speculative investment bubble, that tells you a lot more about capitalism and the economic system we live under than it does about the tool itself. As a computer programmer, I think AI is a wonderful tool that has increased my productivity by at least an order of magnitude. I'd go so far as to say Claude Code is the best tool I have ever used. Debate me and name a better one. Is AI potentially dangerous? Yes, but so are a lot of tools. Chainsaws. Steam engines (early ones would occasionally explode and kill everyone in the room). Do you think cavemen sat around debating whether fire could be used as a weapon or for self-harm, and decided not to discover it? I have two friends who hate AI for opposite reasons: one thinks it's a fad and not useful, and the other thinks it's going to take over everything and cause human extinction. Come out tonight, have a friendly debate, and make some friends. No lectures. Friendly crowd. Drop in for one drink and stay if it's fun.
