Saltwater & Stories Book Club Launch Meeting
Saltwater & Stories Book Club Launch Meeting
### Saltwater & Stories — Saltwater & Stories is a monthly gathering for women who love books, meaningful conversation, and community. Inspired by the beauty and rhythm of island life, we come together to read and discuss books written by Black women from the Caribbean, the United States, and across the diaspora. From novels and memoirs to poetry, essays, romance, and everything in between, our selections will celebrate the creativity, strength, and storytelling of Black women while encouraging us to fall back in love with reading without limits. Many of us are working professionals and women navigating full lives — balancing family, careers, friendships, growth and self-care. This space was created for women who are craving connection with others in a similar season of life, especially women of color who value social connection, community, and meaningful new friendships. I’m starting this group because years ago I belonged to a book club where I met incredible women who shared my love of reading. Those conversations, friendships, and moments of connection stayed with me, and I realized how much I missed that sense of community. Each month we’ll gather at different spots around the island — whether it’s a breezy beachside space, a local café, or a cozy restaurant — to share thoughts on the book, connect with one another, and enjoy great conversation. My vision for this community is simple: • Read broadly and boldly across genres and topics • Meet once a month for inspiring book discussions (in person or occasionally online) • Build lasting friendships and authentic connections • Support accountability, consistency, and personal growth • Plan dinners, drinks, outings, and small meetups beyond book club meetings to build sisterhood This is more than a book club. It’s a social circle, a support system, and a space where women can show up for themselves and each other again — connecting over great books, great food, great drinks, and great conversation! Whether you're here for the reading, the friendships, or both, you belong here. Come as you are, bring your book, bring a friend and join the circle! Let’s read, connect, and grow — one book, one conversation, and one meetup at a time.

COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers. For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.

Take Control Of Your Life, Freedom From Negative Thoughts & Irrational Emotions
Take Control Of Your Life, Freedom From Negative Thoughts & Irrational Emotions
Feeling down? Sometimes depressed? Can't focus? Negativity & stress? Recent losses? Creativity in career and personal life hindered by mental blocks? Sometimes we never fully recover from traumatic experiences. Whether it was yesterday, last week or a year ago, traumatic experiences - a loss of a loved one, losing a job, a breakup - can leave you scarred. You talk about it and feel a little better, but it never goes away. After you hang up the phone, it's still there; the sadness, the cloud, the over-thinking, the worry, the guilt. You try to focus, but you're blocked. You try to look forward into new experiences, new relationships but a cloud is hanging over you, casting a shadow on what you once considered a bright, cheerful future. What happened to your courage? Your strength of character? You're 'why not' attitude? Whoever said 'time heals' must have had a special time machine, because after weeks, months, years, you're wondering - when exactly does that kick in? Sometimes it seems like drinking or drugs are the way to go. But they wear off, and now the problem is still there with added side effects from the drugs. At this free local Meetup event we will talk about: * What causes grief, anxiety and depression to become chronic. * Is it possible to regain your joy and happiness even after traumatic experiences? * How to break away from negativity and focus on the future * What are the steps to take to get control of your mind and your emotions? Learn about a safe, gentle, do-it-yourself counseling that can be done in the comfort of your own home. Let's explore safe, effective solutions for healing from traumatic experiences. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to the event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center.
