All Out of Bubblegum Film Club 136 / Perfect Blue
All Out of Bubblegum Film Club 136 / Perfect Blue
Perfect Blue (Japanese: パーフェクトブルー, Hepburn: Pāfekuto Burū) is a 1997 Japanese animated psychological thriller film directed by Satoshi Kon. It is loosely based on the novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis (パーフェクトブルー:完全変態, Pāfekuto Burū: Kanzen Hentai) by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, with a screenplay by Sadayuki Murai. Featuring the voices of Junko Iwao, Rica Matsumoto, Shiho Niiyama, Masaaki Okura, Shinpachi Tsuji and Emiko Furukawa, the plot follows a member of a Japanese idol group who retires from music to pursue an acting career. As she becomes a victim of stalking by her obsessive fan, gruesome murders take place, and she begins losing her grip on reality. The film deals with the blurring of the line between fantasy and reality, a commonly found theme in Kon's other works, such as Millennium Actress (2001), Paranoia Agent (2004), and Paprika (2006). The film garnered critical acclaim and is now regarded as a masterpiece of animation and one of the best anime films of all time. Please note we will not be showing the film at the meeting. Make sure you watch the film before you attend and then come and join in with the conversation. It’s just a discussion. It’s not a screening. We will be meeting in The Ludski Bar in the Rio Cinema. Discuss & Social 🍷 Is style/fashion superficial or a fabric of our identity?
Discuss & Social 🍷 Is style/fashion superficial or a fabric of our identity?
We often hear that people's style/fashion choices can be superficial and consumerist. We also rightly hear criticism against the big industry players' practices. But does this make style and fashion inherently a dilemma of "vanity vs function"? Whether we wear casual hoodies like in a tech startup, or designer pieces from the catwalk, don't we all signal something about who we are and where we belong? We'll discuss.. 1- Why do we appreciate other forms of creativity (painting, design, entrepreneurship, etc) but are more critical of people's clothing choices? 2- Can our style choices carry a deeper effect than just the external looks? 3- How many of our close friends wear completely different styles from us? Why / why not? *Join us for a relaxed group conversation where we explore the real life, the grey areas, and how our different cultures and backgrounds shape our views about key topics.* *Expect real talk, no judgment, and a chance to learn how others see it.* **\*Come for the discussion, stay for the friendships. Our weekly discussion series brings together thoughtful people for honest conversations on relationships, life, and society - with warm social vibes before and after.\*** **WHAT TO EXPECT:** * Good vibes only: we chat big topics in a chill, respectful way. No arguing - just open-minded exchange. * We warm up with casual socializing (come solo or with friends!) * The topic starts around 7:45/8pm, wraps around 9:30. * 🍕 There's pizza, drinks, milkshakes and snacks available at the bar (incl plant-based options) * And most people stay until late for drinks and mingling! **DISCUSSION FORMAT:** **\- Our group conversations are open and flexible\! There is a very soft guided flow to ensure we focus on the key questions\, and to ensure that everyone gets a balanced opportunity to speak\.** \- We rotate groups intentionally during the discussion so everyone gets to meet a wider mix of people and perspectives\. \- After the structured part\, you’re free to mix and mingle with anyone\. **Here's a typical discussion structure, but we may adjust this depending on the turnout:** \- Introductions and initial thoughts *(\~5 mins).* \- Group breakouts per question *(\~20 mins x 3).* \- Final round of opinions *(\~10 mins)*. \- Mix and mingle\, make new friends\, get drinks etc *(\~until late)* **Rules & etiquette:** 1\. Debate the topic\, not the participants \- no personal attacks please\. 2\. No phones\, no interrupting\, no bystanding\. 3\. Always follow the moderator/host instructions and guidelines\. **WHAT IS WORLD CITIZENS?** We're one of London's longest-running and largest communities. Since 2012 we run socials, cultural activities and stimulating discussions to foster meaningful exchange and learning among London's global professionals. They are inspired by MUN (Model United Nations) and salon discussions and offer a more relaxed and social evening version. **LOCATION DETAILS** What: Discussion session followed by social/networking When: Tuesday, 7:30pm until late. Where: Curzon Aldgate (bar area), 2 Canter Way, E1 8PS Closest stations: Aldgate East, Aldgate, Tower Hill/Gateway Cost: Pay for your own meals or drinks Hosts: We have a rotating team and the actual host of each event varies. Nonfiction Bookclub: The Cheese and the Worms by Carlo Ginzburg
Nonfiction Bookclub: The Cheese and the Worms by Carlo Ginzburg
**New members of all ages always welcome!** The Cheese and the Worms is an incisive study of popular culture in the sixteenth century as seen through the eyes of one man, the miller known as Menocchio, who was accused of heresy during the Inquisition and sentenced to death. Carlo Ginzburg uses the trial records to illustrate the religious and social conflicts of the society Menocchio lived in. For a common miller, Menocchio was surprisingly literate. In his trial testimony he made references to more than a dozen books, including the Bible, Boccaccio's Decameron, Mandeville's Travels, and a "mysterious" book that may have been the Koran. And what he read he recast in terms familiar to him, as in his own version of the creation: "All was chaos, that is earth, air, water, and fire were mixed together; and of that bulk a mass formed-just as cheese is made out of milk-and worms appeared in it, and these were the angels." Ginzburg's influential book has been widely regarded as an early example of the analytic, case-oriented approach known as microhistory. In a thoughtful new preface, Ginzburg offers his own corollary to Menocchio's story as he considers the discrepancy between the intentions of the writer and what gets written. The Italian miller's story and Ginzburg's work continue to resonate with modern readers because they focus on how oral and written culture are inextricably linked. Menocchio's 500-year-old challenge to authority remains evocative and vital today.

Tall Persons Meet up in a pub to talk, drink, eat and make new friends
Tall Persons Meet up in a pub to talk, drink, eat and make new friends
Hello fellow tallies, **and by tallies we mean women over 5\`9 and men over 6\`2**. This is the one chance a month for us to meet up in person literally face to face in London. We are moving back to our old central London meeting place at **The Marlborough Arms** for a few months. **The Marlborough Arms is at 36 Torrington Pl, London WC1E 7LY**. It is Just a few minutes from Goodge Street tube station and a 10 minute walk from Tottenham Court Road, Russell Square and Euston Square tube stations. **The Tall Persons Club have been meeting in London on the last Friday of every month for over 30 years** so there tends to be more people there than just who is on this Meetup group. Come and experience the back straightening joy of standing alongside people who are taller than you and learn a whole new body posture, that accompanies that - cheaper than a Chiropractor! You are welcome to bring a non tall partner or friend, but one of you MUST be tall! **PLEASE NOTE:** this is a tall persons meet up where we tallies get a chance to talk to other tallies so there is a **minimum height requirement of 6\`2 for men and 5\`9 for women**. The venue is a Greene King managed pub with their own range of beers, gins (!) and spirits. Classic pub grub is available. We're happy to report that the staff there are friendly and looking forward to being looked down on - in the physical sense, not the attitudinal one. When you get to the pub, we have an area reserved right at the back of the back of the pub on the left hand side, When you get to the back room room you should see us there easily enough but if not just come in to the room where you should find either Mike, Simon, Neal, Sharran, Rory (we will have name stickers on) and we will introduce you around. If all else fails look for a 3ft wooden Giraffe called Jerry who will be sitting on on of our tables. Everyone is nervous the first time but we are a really friendly eclectic bunch, and we really look forward to meeting you! If in doubt to where we are then just please just ask the bar staff and they will point you in the right direction. If you have any questions, please email us at **** **[members@tallclub.co.uk](mailto:outings@tallclub.co.uk)**
