Villagers dressed as other deities (the origin of today’s Piu Sik parade) to inspect every corner of the island and restore peace. The modern form, including the famous bun-snatching competition, has been held annually (with a brief COVID hiatus) and now coincides with Buddha’s Birthday, blending Taoist roots with broader cultural appeal. It was recognised as part of China’s national intangible cultural heritage in 2011. **Cultural Significance** Rooted in Taoist traditions, this festival began over two centuries ago as a community ritual to ward off plague and evil spirits.
