Easter Hike from Trogen to Appenzell
Easter Hike from Trogen to Appenzell
Join us on the hike from Trogen to Appenzell! It's the second stage of the Alpine Panorama Trail that leads from Rorschach all across Switzerland to Geneva. For a precise description including pictures see https://schweizmobil.ch/en/hiking-in-switzerland/route-3/stage-2. The picture in the description shows Appenzell in winter 2021 (it's the only one I had from Appenzell). I don't expect any snow there at the moment. However, there might be some snow patches on the way. MEETING: Meeting point is in Zurich main station under the blue angel at 10 am. Be aware that I will join you in Winterthur. I'll meet you in the last coach of second class in direction of travel. HIKE DATA (according to Swisstopo): * Distance: 13.5 km * Difference in altitude: 543 m up and 674 m down * Estimated hiking time (without breaks): 4 hours * Difficulty\*: T2 WHAT TO BRING: * Lunch * Hiking shoes * Cash * Valid ticket(s) for public transport HOW TO GET THERE: * Departure from Zurich main station: 10.08 am (track 6, IR 13 towards Sargans) * Arrival in St. Gallen: 11.22 am * Departure from St. Gallen: 11.26 am (track 12, S21 towards Trogen) * Arrival in Trogen: 11.52 am WAY BACK: There is every half an hour a connection from Appenzell to Zurich. I expect us to be able to take the train leaving at 5 pm (arrival in Zurich main station at 6.52 pm). However, it would be nice to walk through the historic town of Appenzell and have an early dinner there. Urban Sketching @ Archäologische Sammlung Uni-Zürich [new date, new location]
Urban Sketching @ Archäologische Sammlung Uni-Zürich [new date, new location]
Als Leitfaden dienen die Werte der Urban Sketchers: https://urbansketchers.org/de/who-we-are/#mission/ #uskzurich \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- \- EN UPDATE 25 March: The Graphische Sammlung (see below) is closed over the Easter weekend. However, the weather is expected to remain cold. So we’ll head ‘one door down’ to the University of Zurich’s Archaeological Collection. There, plenty of casts of historical statues are waiting for us to sketch them. Chairs are available to borrow there. Admission is free. If the weather turns out to be nice after all, we can always head to the Polyterrasse. We’ll meet inside in the museum foyer. END OF UPDATE As the weather is set to turn properly cold and unpleasant again, we are postponing our next meetup by one week to the Easter weekend. And since the first Sunday of the month falls on Easter Sunday this time, we will meet on Saturday instead. That works out rather well, because the Graphische Sammlung at ETH Zurich is opening an intriguing new exhibition: “Glaciers & Rapids. Drawn Switzerland around 1800.” It presents works from its rich holdings of 18th and 19th century Swiss drawings, including watercolours, gouaches, studies and scientifically informed depictions of the Alps. The exhibition explores how the visual image of Switzerland was shaped around 1800, through glaciers, mountain scenery and dramatic natural subjects that still resonate today. For sketchers, this promises compelling lines, tonal values, compositions and the question of how landscape can be staged through drawing. If the weather is fine, however, we can also draw outdoors instead, for example on the Polyterrasse with a view over the old town. In any case, we’ll meet indoors in front of the entrance to the Graphic Collection exhibition. More information about the exhibition can be found here: https://gs.ethz.ch Please bring your own drawing materials. No prior experience required. We sketch for about 2 hours, solo or in small groups, at an easy pace. Afterwards we regroup, share our sketches and take a group photo. As always, we follow the Urban Sketchers values: https://urbansketchers.org/who-we-are/#mission/ #uskzurich

Semi in honor of March being International Women's Month Columbus libraries: [https://cml.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S105C3454709](https://cml.bibliocommons.com/v2/record/S105C3454709) Location: SOW Plated Menu: [https://www.sowplated.com/menu-brunch/](https://www.sowplated.com/menu-brunch/) Book summary: In 2006 Julia Lerner is living in Moscow, a recent university graduate in computer science, when she's recruited by Russia's largest intelligence agency. By 2018 she's in Silicon Valley as COO of Tangerine, one of America's most famous technology companies. In between her executive management (make offers to promising startups, crush them and copy their features if they refuse); self promotion (check out her latest op-ed in the WSJ, on Work/Life Balance 2.0); and work in gender equality (transfer the most annoying females from her team), she funnels intelligence back to the motherland. But now Russia's asking for more, and Julia's getting nervous. Alice Lu is a first generation Chinese American whose parents are delighted she's working at Tangerine (such a successful company!). Too bad she's slogging away in the lower echelons, recently dumped, and now sharing her expensive two-bedroom apartment with her cousin Cheri, a perennial "founder's girlfriend". One afternoon, while performing a server check, Alice discovers some unusual activity, and now she's burdened with two powerful but distressing suspicions: Tangerine's privacy settings aren't as rigorous as the company claims they are, and the person abusing this loophole might be Julia Lerner herself. The closer Alice gets to Julia, the more Julia questions her own loyalties. Russia may have placed her in the Valley, but she's the one who built her career; isn't she entitled to protect the lifestyle she's earned?
