**“Box Hill” by Adam Mars-Jones (2020)**
In 1975, eighteen-year-old Colin meets the older biker Ray on Box Hill. Their chance encounter leads to a six-year, tightly controlled relationship in which power, dependence and intimacy intertwine. Told two decades later, the novel offers a nostalgic yet unsparing portrait of a male world shaped by motorcycle racing, power games and dry British humour.
This story of a problematic SM relationship inspired the movie “Pillion” by Harry Lighton. On the Sunday of his eighteenth birthday, in 1975, Colin takes a walk on Box Hill, a biker hang-out in Surrey. There he accidentally trips over Ray, a biker napping under a tree. From the very first moment, the natural authority of the older man in leather exerts an irresistible attraction on Colin. The consequences are his first sexual experience, his first ride on a Norton Commando and his first relationship. On the very same day, he moves in with him – the beginning of a six-year, strictly regimented coupledom in which the boundaries between submission and security dissolve. Told with a time lag of almost twenty years, “Box Hill” depitcs a male idyll of unbridled motorcycle racing, draconian power games and dirty poker rounds with nostalgia, tenderness a charming dose of British humour.

Radical Empathy \*Queere Perspectives on Conflict, Resilience & Connectiont marks instinct #20 and brings together queer artists and collectives to explore how we live conflict differently—through practices of care, resilience, and connection.
Conflict is part of our lives. How can we live conflicts differently? Radical Empathy begins with the understanding that empathy is not soft, neutral, or given. It is learned, practiced, and risked. The exhibition explores queer artistic practices as sites of radical empathy—understood not as passive emotional identification but as a relational and transformative engagement with difference.
Drawing from queer history, progressive ethics of care, and contemporary art practices, the exhibition examines how queer art creates conditions for empathy that resist assimilation, challenge heteronormative perspectives, and center lived experience as a vital form of knowledge. Queer artists and collectives frequently work from positions of historical exclusion, using art as a means of survival, connection, and world-building. In this context, Radical Empathy moves beyond the notion of simply “feeling for” another; it emphasizes a willingness to remain open to discomfort, to difference, and the possibility of being transformed through encounter.

\*The exhibition instinct#20 Radical Empathy serves as an artistic reflection on two we are village projects, Conflict and Resilience and Queer Connect.

Instinct #20 | I feel you like the moon feels the earth
**Instinct \#21 \| I feel you like the moon feels the earth**
with ***Ahmed El Gendy***
for **LGBTQIA+**
**Free Admission**
For Instinct #20, Ahmed El Gendy ***I feel you like the moon feels the earth***, a 20-minute performance (spoken in English) that traces a memory of proximity, silence, and the charged tenderness of being led.
The work starts from a simple confession—“I did not want to sleep upstairs because it was cold, and I did not dare to sleep next to him.”—and opens into a recounting of a 24-hour encounter with a stranger in Amsterdam, lived without words.
**I feel you like the moon feels the earth**
performance – 20 minutes
spoken language in English
“I did not want to sleep upstairs because it was cold, and I did not dare to sleep next to him.”
As the audience pass me from hand to hand, I recount my memory of a long encounter with a stranger in Amsterdam. I spent 24 hours in silence with him, allowing him to lead the day, at his home and outside, while I quietly followed.
🔵
Love: Past, Present, and Future – From Biology to the Heart
**Love: Past, Present, and Future – From Biology to the Heart**
Love is one of the most intimate and transformative experiences of being alive. It can bring joy or heartbreak, clarity or confusion, fleeting moments or lifelong bonds. While deeply personal, love is also universal—woven into our biology, reflected in human culture, mirrored in the animal kingdom, and explored through spiritual and moral traditions.
At its core, love is biological. Our brains are wired for connection: dopamine sparks desire, oxytocin fosters attachment. These chemical signals guide attraction, bonding, and social cohesion. Yet love is far more than biology.
Across spiritual traditions, love is celebrated as sacred and transformative, guiding behavior, inspiring compassion, and creating meaning beyond the self. Devotion, care, and empathy show how love can connect individuals, communities, and the wider world.
Love is not unique to humans. Animals form bonds, care for their young, and display loyalty and attachment. From swans that mate for life to nurturing communities of elephants and dolphins, the natural world reminds us that connection is both instinctive and profound.
In modern times, love is evolving. Romantic partnerships, friendships, and self-love are increasingly shaped by digital technology, social change, and global mobility. Love today can cross continents in an instant, flourish in virtual spaces, or challenge traditional norms—emphasizing choice, equality, emotional fulfillment, and authenticity.
Looking ahead, love may take forms we can barely imagine. Artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and bioengineering could reshape intimacy, attachment, and connection.
Future relationships might include AI companions, hybrid human-digital bonds, or entirely new ways of caring for others—prompting us to rethink what it means to love.
This session will explore love as a phenomenon that spans biology, psychology, society, spirituality, the animal kingdom, and emerging futures. We will reflect on how love is felt, expressed, and understood—personally and collectively—and how it shapes identity, behavior, and meaning in life.
**We will focus on:**
* Cultural, historical, and spiritual perspectives on love
* The biology of attraction, bonding, and attachment
* Psychology: intimacy, emotional bonds, and human connection
* Lessons from the animal kingdom: care, loyalty, and partnership
* Modern love: technology, social change, and evolving norms
* The future of love: AI, virtual relationships, and new possibilities
* Personal dimensions: vulnerability, growth, heartbreak, and self-love
* Expanding who can love freely and how we practice love today
Join us for an intimate and reflective conversation on love—in all its forms, from brain chemistry to spiritual and moral traditions, from animal bonds to digital possibilities. Together, we’ll explore how love shapes life today and what it might become tomorrow.

Arthouse Friday: THE DRAMA at the Drexel Theatre!
Join us as we get together for an Arthouse Movie Friday event to see the A24 dark comedy /romance / psychological-thriller, THE DRAMA! The film stars Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as a happily engaged couple whose relationship is challenged when one discovers unsettling truths about the other. Here are details, a trailer and our plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: The film follows a happily engaged couple whose relationship is put to the test when an unexpected turn sends their wedding week off the rails. The film comes from A24, is written/directed by Kristoffer Borgli stars Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Mamoudou Athie, Alana Haim, Hailey Gates and Zoë Winters.
ZENDAYA-PATTINSON TRIFECTA CHALLENGE: Robert Pattinson and Zendaya will star in THREE movies together this year, including THE DRAMA, Christopher Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY this Summer and Denis Villeneuve’s DUNE: PART THREE at Christmas!
TRAILER: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zmKcUa4Xxk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zmKcUa4Xxk)
BUZZ & REVIEWS: Overall some solid early reviews but this one seems to be a bit polarizing! We’ll have to see for ourselves. Those in the “loved it” camp say is not the rom-com the trailers would have you to believe! Instead, a twisty darkly comedic drama that’s “anchored by two compelling performances,” “an original idea, great cast, and a movie that’s gonna have people talking at the end of it!”
PLAN: A slightly later showtime so we’ll go with dinner before the show this time. Here’s the plan: For dinner before the movie, meet at nearby BRASSICA between 5:45 and 6:00pm. Go through the line, and we’ll try to snag as many of the high-top tables as we can. For the movie, please purchase your ticket for the 7:30pm showing and we’ll meet in the lobby area between 7:00 and 7:15pm. I’ll be with the dinner group and will try to get there as close to 7pm as possible. Advance ticket purchase not required for this theater. When you purchase yours at counter, be sure to mention you’re with the Movie Group for admission and concession discounts.
Take care and look forward to seeing you there, Dan
Columbus Comedy Improv Meetup at Gresso's!
Whether you've never done improv before, or you've done it for so long you knew Del Close on a personal level, or anywhere in between, come join us! Swing by *Gresso's* for the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup** for some fun and games!
The idea behind improv is to create entire scenes from scratch based on a suggestion from the audience. This can be done in game form, like *Whose Line Is It Anyway*, *ComedySportz*, or *Wild 'n Out*; it could also be done to tell stories, like *Middleditch and Schwartz*. Our meetup, which is central Ohio's longest running (and free!) weekly comedy event, brings the games (and occasionally different forms) for you to play in a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment. Not only is it a lot of fun, but you get to work on thinking faster on your feet, plus it's an excellent way to meet new people and make friendships that'll last a lifetime!
Ask yourself if you want to join the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup**, and say "Yes, And" that you'll have fun!

...and speaking of breakthrough roles: who can forget the first time we saw Tom Cruise singing Bob Seeger in his underwear? See the movie first and join us for some "Cruisin'"
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Engaging in men’s work is the new way to forge friendships while being open-minded to personal growth. Many men experience healthier relationships, personally and professionally, by engaging in this work.
Open Men’s Group is a container for men to share vulnerably without receiving judgment or feedback.
We believe that emotionally mature, powerful, compassionate, and purpose-driven men will help heal some of society’s deepest wounds. We support the powerful brilliance of men and we are willing to look at, and take full responsibility for, the pain we are also capable of creating – and suffering. We care deeply about men, our families, communities, and the planet.

CMG Gives Back: Serve Brunch at FAITH MISSION GRANT KITCHEN!
Join us as we get together to get together to help those in need at this CMG Gives Back event! We have a great little community of Movie Group friends so rather than see a movie this time, we’ll help “create a better world” by helping serve those in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event:
FAITH MISSION – GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces.
PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants.
LOCATION: Faith Mission – Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map. On-site parking in the adjacent lot and street parking is available in the surrounding area. Below are some links / attachments with additional info/details:
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Our group will be providing all of the volunteers on this day so a firm RSVP count is essential. Please only sign up if you are certain you’ll be able to attend. If something unavoidable comes up, please try to update your RSVP no later than one week prior to the event. With few exceptions, no shows or cancelations within 1
week of the event will not be eligible for future CMG Gives Back events. I appreciate your understanding as we try to ensure the agencies have the volunteers needed to provide the essential services they provide to the vulnerable population they serve. Our Partner Agency for this event is Lutheran Social Services! A huge THANK YOU to all of YOU for volunteering at this (and any of our previous) CMG Gives Back events!
Should be a good/fun/meaningful time together, Dan
