[In-person] Curiosity Café – Ethics of the Family
Our families, or lack thereof, are one of the first things we become aware of. For better or worse, as children, most of us rely on family to meet our needs and help us learn how to exist in the world. Their presence or absence shapes our behaviours and affects how others treat us. We may be judged by what our parents do for work, how our children behave, whether we have strong or weak family values and ties, or our ability to fulfill familial obligations. ‘Family’ shapes how we come to learn about the world, how we relate to one another and to ourselves, and the goals we set. Through our lived experience, the stories we’re told, and the cultural values many of us have inherited, ‘family’ has become a relational category whose existence we assume is natural; that is, family units have always existed and always will. But could a world without families exist? Statistically, families are the epicentre for cases of violence and abuse, and perpetuating economic inequality. Given this, would we be *better off* in a world without family as we know it?
Join co-moderators Fallon Taylor-Kanary and Sophia Whicher at our next Curiosity Café, where we’ll explore the following questions:
* Who do you consider to be family? Why?
* How do you feel when you think about family?
* What function does family play in our lives?
* Why are families sites of so much violence?
* How is contemporary infrastructure (architecture, policies, institutions, etc) designed around families?
* How would our relations be different if our material and economic conditions weren’t shaped or mediated by the family?
* Would a world without families *necessarily* be a world with less love and care?
**Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-ethics-of-the-family-tickets-1987289282741) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 6-6:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 6:30-8:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle.
Hope to see you there!

This event is brought to you by [Being and Becoming](https://beingnbecoming.org/), a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us.
By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences.

About the Curiosity Café Series:
For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafés and are wondering what they’re all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about life’s big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.

Looking for something different to do on a Saturday night in Toronto?
Social Creatures is back with another Social Mixer at Crystal Thani on College Street on Saturday April 25. If you enjoy meeting new people, playing interactive social games, and stepping into something a little outside your usual routine, this night is designed for you.
This is not a normal meetup where people are left to figure things out on their own. There is a host guiding the entire room, running structured activities, using materials, and shaping how people move and connect throughout the night. It removes the awkward guessing and creates a flow where meeting people feels natural.
Whether you are more introverted, highly social, or somewhere in between, the environment is built to make connection easier. The activities are designed so conversations happen without forcing anything, and people end up meeting others they normally would not cross paths with.
Toronto can often feel like people stay within their own circles. This mixer is about breaking that pattern. Most people arrive not knowing anyone in the room. As the night goes on, strangers become familiar faces and the energy of the space starts to shift into something more connected and alive.
We are also introducing new activities and social challenges for this event, designed to get people moving, laughing, and interacting with different people throughout the night.
It is encouraged to come on your own. People who arrive solo usually engage more fully, meet more people, and experience the event in a more open way.
Social Creatures was recently featured in a BlogTO article, highlighting how these events are helping people in Toronto meet new friends and reconnect with the social side of the city.
If you are open to new experiences, meeting interesting people, and being part of something positive in the city, you will feel at home here.

Who Should Come

⸻
Dress Code
Come as you are. Casual, comfortable, and expressive.
Everyone attending is expected to treat others respectfully and contribute to a welcoming environment.
⸻
About Social Creatures
Social Creatures started with a simple idea. Toronto needed more spaces where people could gather, play games, and meet others without it feeling forced.
What began as small gatherings between friends has grown into a community where people come together to socialize, try new activities, and create memorable moments in the city.
⸻
Venue Tips
Support the venue by purchasing at least one drink or food item.
Be mindful of others and help keep the environment positive for everyone.
⸻
Common Questions
Can I come alone?
Yes. Most people attend solo, and it is encouraged because it creates a more open and connected environment.
Do I need experience with the games?
No experience is needed. Everything is beginner friendly and guided by the host.
Is this a dating event?
No. The focus is social connection and meeting new people.
What should I bring?
Bring yourself and a positive mindset. You may also want money for food or drink.
Can I leave early?

AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s?
This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation?
We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee.

Summer Social: Let's kick off summer with Adult field day at Shadybowl!
We’re bringing back Adult Field Day.
Last year was a good mix of competition and just hanging out, so we’re doing it again with some new games mixed in. Think team-based challenges, simple races, and a few things inspired by game shows.
You don’t need to be athletic. Most of the fun is just being part of a team and getting to know people you wouldn’t normally talk to.
The goal isn’t really winning. It’s meeting people, laughing a bit, and leaving knowing a few more names than when you showed up.
If you stick around after, we’ll have a potluck, a bonfire, and a couple comedians in the evening.
Bring:
* Something to share for the potluck
* Clothes you can move around in

The Story So Far: A WiA Reflection Circle
A WiA Collective Wisdom Exchange
At the start of this year, we gathered to look back, set intentions, and imagine the next chapter.
This is the follow-up.
Not a check-in. Not a progress report. A small, facilitated circle to reconnect with what you said mattered — and honestly explore what’s actually happening now.
Together, we’ll explore:
• What you intended at the start of this year - and what that looks like three months in
• What’s surprised you, supported you, or shifted
• What the next chapter needs now that you know what you know
If you were at our January gathering, bring whatever you made or wrote — your word, your artifact, your intention. We’ll look at it with fresh eyes. If this is your first time, you belong here too. You’ll start where we all started: with what’s true right now.
Optional art materials will be available for anyone who wants to reflect creatively alongside conversation. If you brought something home from January, you’re warmly invited to bring it back.
The intention is the same as always: everyone leaves feeling more clear, more connected, and a little lighter.
Space is intentionally limited to keep the experience intimate.
What to Expect
• A small, welcoming circle (not a large meetup)
• Structured conversation so everyone has space to speak
• Reflection, listening, and lived experience — not advice-giving
• Optional creative reflection alongside conversation
• A calm, supportive environment
Who This Is For
Women and underrepresented folks working in or around agile, product, technology, leadership, or organizational change — especially those looking for honest conversation and community beyond frameworks and buzzwords.
Good to Know
• No preparation required
• If you attended in January, we invite you to bring anything you created or wrote (or something that represents your intention at the start of the year) - it’s optional but invited
• Participation is invitational; listening is always welcome
• Creative activities are optional
Sunday funday: let's play dodgeball at Scioto Audubon park
Dodgeball is back again!
If you’ve been wanting to come out, this is an easy one to join. We’ll be playing for about 1.5 to 2 hours, you do not need to bring any equipment, and no experience is needed.
We use a specific set of rules and equipment to make the games run better and keep them fun for everybody, not just people who already know how to play.
If it rains, the event will be canceled.
