Discuss & Social 🍷 The rejection game: white lies vs clear communication
Discuss & Social 🍷 The rejection game: white lies vs clear communication
**Discussion overview:** White lies, ghosting, fake excuses - modern rejection can be a minefield. Many people try polite or indirect exits to stay safe and protect everyone's feelings. But do these actually cause more harm than good? Could clear and open communication actually be more safe, respectful and constructive for everyone? We'll discuss.. 1\. 📱 **The Polite Lie:** Is indirect communication (white lies, ghosting, fake excuses, etc) a valid way to stay safe and protect people's feelings? 2\. 🎭 **What Do We Owe?** Do we owe someone an honest and clearer explanation? Could doing so help them move on and/or focus on other things, e.g. improve themselves? 3\. 🥂 **The Good Vibe:** Can rejection happen without entirely dismissing someone or making the next interactions awkward? *Join us for a relaxed group conversation where we explore real life, grey areas, and how our different cultures and backgrounds shape our views about key topics.* *Expect real talk, no judgment, and a chance to learn how others see it.* **\*Come for the discussion, stay for the friendships. Our weekly discussion series brings together thoughtful people for honest conversations on relationships, life, and society - with warm social vibes before and after.\*** **WHAT TO EXPECT:** * Good vibes only: we chat big topics in a chill, respectful way. No arguing - just open-minded exchange. * We warm up with casual socializing (come solo or with friends!) * The topic starts around 7:45/8pm, wraps around 9:30. * 🍕 There's pizza, drinks, milkshakes and snacks available at the bar (incl plant-based options) * And most people stay until late for drinks and mingling! **DISCUSSION FORMAT:** **\- Our group conversations are open and flexible\! There is a very soft guided flow to ensure we focus on the key questions\, and to ensure that everyone gets a balanced opportunity to speak\.** \- We rotate groups intentionally during the discussion so everyone gets to meet a wider mix of people and perspectives\. \- After the structured part\, you’re free to mix and mingle with anyone\. **Here's a typical discussion flow, but we may adjust this depending on the turnout:** \- Introductions and initial thoughts *(\~5 mins).* \- Group breakouts per question *(\~20 mins x 3).* \- Final round of opinions *(\~10 mins)*. \- Mix and mingle\, make new friends\, get drinks etc *(\~until late)* **Rules & etiquette:** 1\. Debate the topic\, not the participants \- no personal attacks please\. 2\. No phones\, no interrupting\, no bystanding\. 3\. Always follow the moderator/host instructions and guidelines\. **WHAT IS WORLD CITIZENS?** We're one of London's longest-running and largest communities. Since 2012 we run socials, cultural activities and stimulating discussions to foster meaningful exchange and learning among London's global professionals. They are inspired by MUN (Model United Nations) and salon discussions and offer a more relaxed and social evening version. **LOCATION DETAILS** What: Discussion session followed by social/networking When: Tuesday, 7:30pm until late. Where: Curzon Aldgate (bar area), 2 Canter Way, E1 8PS Closest stations: Aldgate East, Aldgate, Tower Hill/Gateway Cost: Pay for your own meals or drinks Hosts: We have a rotating team and the actual host of each event varies. Debate: THW Ban Abortion After Week 18 in the UK
Debate: THW Ban Abortion After Week 18 in the UK
In 2025–2026, the UK removed criminal penalties for women ending their own pregnancies, while keeping the 24-week limit. This raises crucial questions: Should abortion beyond 18 weeks be treated as healthcare and personal choice? Or does it blur the law and weaken accountability? **Have your say, join the debate!** Join us on **26 May 2026** at the Windsor Castle pub for drinks and discussion as we debate the motion: **THW Ban Abortion After Week 18 in the UK** **First half**: Improvised mini-debates – all are welcome to speak. **Second half**: Prepared speeches, followed by floor contributions – an opportunity to share your views. **[GET YOUR GUEST TICKET HERE](https://104londondebaters.club/)** During the first half of the meeting, there will be an improvised mini-debate session, where anyone may get called to defend or oppose a motion in 2 minutes (voluntarily, of course). During the main debate, 3 debaters will propose the motion, 3 debaters will oppose it, and **YOU** may give your opinion during Floor Contributions. The meeting will be held on the first floor of[ the Windsor Castle pub](https://windsorcastle-victoria.co.uk/) in Victoria, a beautiful Victorian pub with great food, drinks prices. Make sure to give the code word: *Debate Club*!

MAY Classic: The Encyclopedia of the Dead - Danilo Kiš
MAY Classic: The Encyclopedia of the Dead - Danilo Kiš
New members are always welcome. :) **Description:** ***The Encyclopedia of the Dead*** ([Serbo-Croatian](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serbo-Croatian "Serbo-Croatian"): *Enciklopedija mrtvih*) is a collection of nine stories by Yugoslav author [Danilo Kiš](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danilo_Ki%C5%A1 "Danilo Kiš"). Combining history and fiction in what critics have seen as a postmodern fashion, the stories (which have been compared to the work of [Jorge Luis Borges](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Luis_Borges "Jorge Luis Borges")) have helped cement Kiš's legacy as one of the most important 20th-century Yugoslav authors.

Borders and Belonging: A Humanist Perspective on Immigration in South Africa
Borders and Belonging: A Humanist Perspective on Immigration in South Africa
In recent months, South Africa has witnessed growing tensions around immigration, identity, economic inequality, and social belonging. Public debate has increasingly focused on questions of migration, citizenship, xenophobia, and the treatment of African migrants within African societies. **The Association of Black Humanists and Bolelang Rakeepile of the South African Atheists** invites members of the public, activists, scholars, students, and community leaders to a thoughtful and respectful discussion exploring these issues through a humanist lens. Together, we will examine: \* What drives hostility toward immigrants and foreign nationals? \* How do colonial history, inequality, and economic hardship shape current attitudes? \* What does humanism teach us about human dignity, solidarity, and shared humanity? \* Can borders coexist with compassion and justice? \* How do we challenge xenophobia while addressing legitimate social concerns? This conversation seeks to encourage critical thinking, empathy, and constructive dialogue at a time when division and fear threaten social cohesion across the continent. Bolelang will lead the discussion and he would also be happy to answer questions from the audience. **Date: 30 May 2026** **Time: 3pm (London time) please arrive by 2.45pm** **Venue: Pembury Community Centre,** **1 Atkins Square, Dalston Lane, E8 1HL** Admission is free and all are welcome. A voluntary donation of £3 would be much appreciated. **No human being is illegal. Our shared humanity must remain greater than our borders!!**

Philosophy in the Park 140
Philosophy in the Park 140
Philosophy in the Park is a philosophical discussion group. Open to all. No previous philosophical experience necessary. We will meet at the Baroness Burdett Coutts Drinking Fountain in Victoria Park (East Park). It is marked down as "13" on the official maps found in the park. Here's how it works: * At the start of each hour vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like. The questions with the most votes are the questions we discuss. * We then break up into groups and each group does a different question. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and up end talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer you're welcome to sit back and enjoy the conversation. After an hour we all come back together, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So in 3 hours we go around 3 times. The aim is to have fun, meet new people, generate interesting and thought-provoking conversations, have your horizons expanded, challenge your preconceptions and who knows - you might even learn something? In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive for everyone as possible please follow these simple guidelines: 1. Keep it Philosophical (No Science, no History, no Sociology, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc). 2. Think for Yourself (No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read). 3. Tangents are Cool (Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question). 4. Keep it Succinct (Like this). 5. Be Excellent to Each Other (But of course). Philosophy is about conceptual analysis. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the real world. It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas. To terms of the right attitude: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding. No homework or prior knowledge or reading is necessary - simply come and enjoy the discussions. After the event finishes we have an area reserved in The Shakespeare pub which is just around the corner from the Barbican. You are very welcome to join us if you'd like. If you would like to submit a question please join the Whatsapp group. Question submissions take place on the Thursday before the meeting. We hope to see you there. Nice one. ... London Philosophy Cafe: Is Objective Morality Possible?
London Philosophy Cafe: Is Objective Morality Possible?
Join us for a thought-provoking exploration of one of philosophy’s most enduring questions: **Does objective or universal morality exist?** This event invites participants to delve into the heart of moral philosophy, examining whether moral truths are absolute and universally applicable, or if they are shaped by culture, context, or individual perspective. Through lively discussion and critical inquiry, we’ll challenge assumptions, confront classic and contemporary arguments, and consider the implications of moral objectivity (or its absence) for how we live and interact in an increasingly interconnected world. We have reserved the Chicester Room in ther pub for us . Please ask for Philosophy cafe at the door and they will direct you . We like to break into small groups and have a healthy discussion about life , philosophy and ideas . We break out into groups of 6 to discuss three questions over 45min to 1 hour; and then spend another 45min feeding back into the main group. The three topics are chosen on the day by vote, and largely derived from suggestions on the day. We welcome new ideas , so please come up with suggestions or topics that you want to talk about . There is no specific topic list and you do not need to read or know anything particular about philosophy . The official time is 7-9: 30 pm , but we usually go into a pub mode after 9:30 pm and continue our discusssions.
