Microscopic exploration in the park
Have you ever been curious about nature on a microscopic level? Maybe you have explored galaxies, birds, flowers, plants, insects...but what about on a smaller scale, like the things living inside a drop of pond water?
We organize small hands-on sessions where we collect simple samples from nature and observe them with the prototypes of a portable digital microscope developed by Eureka Microscope ([eurekamicroscope.com](http://eurekamicroscope.com/)), a startup from ETH Zurich.
We are looking for people who enjoy nature, photography, hiking, biodiversity, or simply discovering things that are usually invisible.
Some sessions will also be part of our early prototype testing. That means you can try the microscope, tell us what feels exciting or frustrating, and help shape a new tool that extends nature exploration to a new scale.
No relevant background is needed. Just bring your curiosity :)
***
Come by anytime during the event and try two portable digital microscope prototypes (one with 100X magnification, another with 150X) in the park.
We’ll set up at the meeting point with microscopes, basic sample tools, and a few example samples. When you arrive, we’ll show you how use the microscope and what kinds of things nearby might be interesting to look at.
After the short introduction, you can walk around the park, collect your own samples, and observe them under the microscope.
The microscope can connect to your own phone or iPad through wifi, so you can take and save photos or videos directly on your device.
This is a casual drop-in event, so you don’t need to arrive exactly at the starting time or stay for the whole session. You can use the microscope as long as you want, if this doesn't prevent another attendee from using it.
Parents are welcome to bring children.
No science background or microscope experience is needed.
### What to expect
* A quick demo of how the microscope works
* Suggestions for simple samples to collect in the park
* Time to collect and observe your own samples
* The option to save photos or videos of what you find
* A short feedback conversation if you’d like to help us improve the product
### What to bring
Please bring your phone or iPad if you would like to connect it to the microscope and save your own images or videos.
We’ll bring the microscope and basic tools for sample collection.
P.S. Unfortunately we don't speak German :(

Bad Girls Book Club May 2026
**Our May novel is: *The Quiet Librarian* by Allen Eskens**
**This month’s book is set in the 20th century and mixes historical fiction with suspense and thriller elements. It also centers on women’s stories and relationships. The novel is 368 pages in print or 8 hours and 12 minutes on audiobook.**
Hana Babic is a quiet, middle-aged librarian in Minnesota who wants nothing more than to be left alone. But when a detective arrives with the news that her best friend has been murdered, Hana knows that something evil has come for her, a dark remnant of the past she and her friend had shared.
Thirty years before, Hana was someone else: Nura Divjak, a teenager growing up in the mountains of war-torn Bosnia—until Serbian soldiers arrived to slaughter her entire family before her eyes. The events of that day thrust Nura into the war, leading her to join a band of militia fighters, where she became not only a fierce warrior but a legend—the deadly Night Mora. But a shattering final act forced Nura to flee to the United States with a bounty on her head\*\*.\*\*

Book summary:
On a hot day in Bethlehem, a twelve-year-old Palestinian-American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: 'You exist too much,' she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the U.S. and the Middle East--from New York to Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine--Zaina Arafat's debut novel traces her protagonist's progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.
Unknown Number: The High School Catfish
IMPORTANT INFO: I strongly suggest not reading anything about it online before seeing it. It's best viewed with no previous knowledge. This documentary contains crude terminology and deals with cyberbullying, which may be a trigger for some folks.
AGAIN, PLEASE DO NOT EVEN READ ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU SEE IT.
A very unusual choice for his group... Unknown Number: High School Catfish is an American [true crime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_crime "True crime") documentary film directed by [Skye Borgman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skye_Borgman "Skye Borgman") and released to [streaming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media "Streaming media") on [Netflix](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netflix "Netflix") on August 29, 2025.
The documentary explores the events and investigation into an unknown person [cyberbully](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberbullying "Cyberbullying") and [harassing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harassment "Harassment") teenagers in [Beal City, Michigan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beal_City,_Michigan "Beal City, Michigan") using an unknown number via insults and sexual claims. It also explores the increasingly great impact of the harassment on the community, the eventual reveal of the culprit, and the trial that followed.
Please be ready to discuss the movie by 7PM. We suggest arriving early enough to order and get food beforehand. Thanks.
Unfortunately, it is only available on Netflix. If you would like to attend but do not have Netflix, say so and maybe we can figure something out.
Icebreaker Questions:
1\. Did you figure it out? \(explain\)
2\. From a production perspective\, how do you rate it as a documentary? \(explain\)
Bad Girls Book Club June 2026
**Our June novel is: *The Eights* by Joanna Miller**
**This month’s novel is set during World War I. It’s a 20th-century historical fiction story about friendship and war, with coming-of-age elements and a slightly haunted tone. The book is 384 pages in print and 10 hours and 9 minutes on audiobook.**
Oxford, 1920. For the first time in its one-thousand-year history, Oxford University officially admits female students. Burning with dreams of equality, four young women move into neighboring rooms in Corridor 8. Beatrice, Dora, Marianne, and Otto—collectively known as The Eights—come from all walks of life, each driven by their own motives, each holding tight to their secrets, and are thrown into an unlikely, unshakable friendship.
Dora was never meant to go to university, but, after losing both her brother and her fiancé on the battlefield, has arrived in their place. Politically-minded Beatrice, daughter of a famous suffragette, sees Oxford as a chance to make her own way - and some friends her own age. Otto was a nurse during the war but is excited to return to her socialite lifestyle in Oxford where she hopes to find distraction from the memories that haunt her. And finally Marianne, the quiet, clever daughter of a village pastor, who has a shocking secret she must hide from everyone, even her new friends, if she is to succeed.
Among the historic spires, and in the long shadow of the Great War, the four women must navigate and support one another in a turbulent world in which misogyny is rife, influenza is still a threat, and the ghosts of the Great War don’t always remain dead.
