BORN Toastmasters is an advanced club that formed so professional and aspiring public speakers could improve and take their speaking to the next level. Speakers receive invaluable "round robin" group feedback on ways to dynamically improve and strengthen a speech. We offer a friendly yet challenging environment that is aimed at supporting your speaking development. As a club of speakers, trainers, facilitators, and consultants, our members have various levels of speaking ability. The basic structure for a typical meeting is as follows: 1) INTRODUCTION - The Toastmaster kicks off the meeting. 2) SPEECHES - 1 - 3 Speeches are presented by members from a variety of experience levels. 3) ROUND-ROBIN EVALUATIONS - After each speech, multiple members and guests provide feedback. 4) TABLE TOPICS - If time permits, members and guests are invited to give impromptu 1 -2 minute speeches. Meeting will include general instruction about meditation including the difference between guided meditation and meditation for raising one's consciousness. We will then meditate as a group for 5 minutes and finish with a closing which may include time for questions. Cost of the event is $5. Additional donations are appreciated.

Start the new day with community meditation over Zoom on Mondays and Fridays, from 8-9am, followed by 30 minutes-ish of contemplative discussion. Welcome to the new virtual format of the Catan meet up. We use Catan Universe to play online. Log on to CatanUniverse.com and be ready to share your username with the group. If you have reached level 3 within Catan Universe, please join the Guild most of us are in called Settlers of Gotham. The most popular platform to play CU is through Steam, although some play via their web browser. At the time of the meetup, first connect to the Zoom link provided to meet everyone. We will share our screen names on Catan Universe and start a game via Catan Universe. We will go to breakout rooms, if we have more than one game going. It is ok to join at any time. This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism") Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war). Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering?
