Join us for a challenging two-night backpacking trip into Oregon’s spectacular Eagle Cap Wilderness over Fourth of July weekend.
Often compared to the Sawtooths, the Eagle Caps feature dramatic alpine scenery, rugged peaks, steep mountain slopes, wildflower-filled meadows, and beautiful high mountain lakes. This is a demanding backcountry trip intended for experienced backpackers who are comfortable carrying a full pack over rough terrain.
Trip Details:
• Destination: Crater Lake (Eagle Cap Wilderness, Oregon) 45.04808° N, 117.32746° W
• Distance: approximately 13 miles
• Elevation Gain: approximately 3,200 feet
• Difficulty: Hard
• Duration: 2 nights / 3 days
• Trail Conditions: Steep climbing, numerous switchbacks, creek crossings, downed trees, and rugged terrain
Travel Plan:
Friday:
• Depart Boise around 9:00 AM
• Meetup location in Boise TBD
• Approximately 3.5-hour drive to the trailhead
• Begin hiking Friday afternoon and make as much progress as conditions and group pace allow
Saturday:
• Backcountry camping and exploration
Sunday:
• Break camp and hike out
• Goal is to return to vehicles by approximately 2:00 PM for the drive back to Boise
Important Trail Information:
This trail begins with significant climbing and numerous switchbacks. Participants should be prepared for strenuous hiking while carrying a loaded backpack.
Expect:
• Multiple creek crossings
• Possible downed trees and trail obstacles
• Uneven terrain
• Remote wilderness conditions
• Potential route delays due to trail conditions
Recommended Gear:
• Backpacking equipment suitable for a two-night trip
• Water shoes for creek crossings
• Waterproof stuff sacks or waterproof pack liners
• Work gloves for navigating obstacles and possible trail clearing
• Trekking poles (recommended)
• Adequate food and water treatment supplies
• Weather-appropriate layers
Vehicle Requirements:
The access road is rough and conditions can vary. A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended.
Parking:
Overnight parking fees are required at the trailhead. Please bring cash.

Wildlife & Safety:
Please do not bring firearms on this trip. The goal is for all participants to feel comfortable and safe within the group environment.
Participants are encouraged to carry bear spray and any other personal safety equipment they feel is appropriate for backcountry travel.
Dogs:
Dogs are welcome. Please note that Oregon regulations require dogs to remain on leash.
