Urban & Bay Hikers (Hiking)

One of my favorite little gems a hidden canyon where you will find a lovely shaded redwood forest along the creek, very small waterfalls : >. You will walk in from the Oakland suburbs and in an instance you will be in the middle of a forest. The park is not kept up and there are no trail signs. Relatively small incline approximately 600-foot climb to the crest of Skyline with views back over Oakland and the bay area. We also enjoy some art appreciation ......

Total Distance: Approximately 4.6 miles loop
Hiking Time: 2+ hours
Elevation Change: 650 feet.
Information: Restroom nearby, Free Parking along the street, (Don't park in the Lodge parking lot), Dogs on leashed allowed

Hike Route: Starting Point, Park at Leona Lodge, 4444 Mountain Blvd, Oakland or along the street. Yellow gate downhill from the lodge, We do a short out and back to the casting pools (Restroom) then walk in to the park and arrive at a wooden bridge and a sign for York Trail (only sign you will see), go along the path next to the creek, remember to stay along the creek until the end, Right at the sign marker after crossing a bridge, you will meander back and forth over the creek, eventually the path will go up to a fire road, Left on fire road, then Right uphill through swing gate at the top of the mountain, go straight on the path and you will come out on a panoramic view overlooking Oakland and the San Francisco Bay. (Break & Group photo) Then left with the view on your right, a path through the trees, pass the cell tower and you will get to the road (fence) stay to the Right very shortly, taking the single track trail Right downhill, junction stay to the Right, continue on trail at 3 way intersection go straight arrive at the (Murals) then back out to fire Road go Right and continue downward on the trail until reach the neighborhood, Right on the Road, Right on the Mountain Road and back to the starting point.

Meeting Point: Meet at the Yellow swing Gate, Right down from Lorena Lodge,. 4444 Mountain Blvd, Oakland, Don’t Park in Lorena Lodge

Directions:
From 80 South, 580 east, Take exit 26 toward CA-13/Warren Freeway, Turn right onto Calaveras Ave, Continue straight onto Mountain Blvd, Turn right onto Stauffer Pl, Continue onto Geranium Pl, parking along the street, near the Lodge and the park.

From 880 North, 238 east, then 580 west, continue onto hwy 13, (Oakland), Take exit 1 for Carson Street toward Redwood Road, Sharp right onto Mountain Blvd (signs for Leona Lodge) Turn left onto Stauffer Pl, Continue onto Geranium Pl, parking along the street, near the Lodge and the park.

Sunset District is the largest district in the city and Irving Street and 9th Avenue is the center of all the action. It has a neighborhood feel with a variety of different cultural restaurants, bars, book stores, bakeries, coffee shops, ice cream parlors, clothes and shoe stores, a tattoo parlor, wine bar, the largest Video store, and even a Magic shop. After exploring Irving Street you travel up the majestic Moraga Stairway, then up several more stairways, visiting Grand View Park, Hawk Hill and Turtle Hill, east of 14th Avenue at Santiago. Views of the Sunset and Golden Gate Park and beyond. Travel into Golden Gate Park and out to Stowe Lake, Pagoda and waterfall and up to Strawberry Hill and the great views of the park and the city.

Hike Route: Starting point, Enter Golden Gate Park JFK Drive, Left side of Beach Chalet, Dutch Windmill on Left (Queen Wilhelmina Garden), Continue on JFK Drive past the Buffalo paddock, then Spreckles Lake (Toy boats) Waterfall, (R) into Stowe Lake, towards the waterfall, up stairs to Strawberry Hill, down the same stairs, circle Island, out the same side of the park, then Right back on JFK Drive past and visit the Rose Garden, then continue on JFK Drive, then (R) De Young Museum (explore Music concourse & Academy of Sciences) and exit on the other side, (L) Martin Luther King Drive, Right go out straight on 9th Ave, (stop for Lunch at cafe) then Right on Irving Street, then Left on 15th Avenue, up Hidden Stairway, then Left on Lawton Street, Right on 15th avenue, Lest on 14th Avenue, then Right up the stairs to Grand View Hill, (Break Grand View Park) Then down the stairs continue down Mosaic stairway and continue straight on Moraga street, Right on 19th street, and enter Golden Gate Park, left on Martin Luther King Drive, past the Dutch Windmill, exit Golden Gate Park, then Right on Great Highway pathway pass the polo fields and return to the starting point.

Total Distance: 9.8 miles loop
Hiking Time: 3 - 4 hours
Elevation: 398 feet Mosaic Stairway, 404 feet Strawberry Hill, Grand View Park 666 feet, Total Elevation over 1000 feet
Information: Free Parking along Ocean Beach, Dogs on leash Restrooms bottom Beach Chalet, and scattered throughout Golden Gate Park.

From 101 take exit 1B to merge onto US-101 N/Central Freeway toward Golden Gate Bridge, continue Octavia, then Left Fell street, Left at Stanyan street, Right on Lincoln Way and Right on the Great Highway, on the Right is the Beach Chalet, park across the street near Ocean Beach.

Foothills Park in the city of Palo Alto, San Mateo County is 1,400-acres preserve that is Bounded by Portola Valley, Los Altos Hills, Pearson-Arastradero Preserve and Los Trancos Open Space Preserve, This park hasn't been open to non residence in over 50ty years. We will take Los Trancos Trail which gives us baby waterfalls, Boronda Lake, views (including of several ridiculous Palo Alto Hills mansions), bridges and park benches in places you don’t normally see park benches. There’s one near the mouth of a stream and another at the high point of the hike up three makeshift steps that gives you the most picturesque view of the meadow where you started. Vista Hill is one of the cooler parts of the park.

Hike Route: (Trails not always marked ) Foothills Park Parking Lot near Vista Hill, take Chamise Trail downhill Right on Road at the Interpretive center across the grass and uphill on Los Trancos Trail, cross over the road and continue straight on Los Trancos Trail, near large tree break on grass on plateau with view, then continue meandering uphill and downhill for miles on Los Trancos Trail, cross over the road take and bridge and go uphill on Toyon trail, Left on Woodrat Trail, Right on Lake trail, then Left across the grass, Left cross street and take Chamise Trail uphill, Right at Junction and return back to starting point Vista Hill.
