De quoi s'agit-il
Welcome to "Yet Another Hiking Group in Luxembourg"!
Please read all of the below carefully before you apply to become a group member.
What is YAHGIL about?
This group is about hiking in Luxembourg.
- Most times REALLY in Luxembourg, but sometimes in the surrounding countries, like Belgium, France, or Germany.
- Most times it is ONLY about hiking, but sometimes it may include picnics, swimming, or barbecue.
- Most times it will not rain, we promise! And if it does, we apologize in advance, but we will hike anyway :)
- Most times it will be brisk walks between 15 and 20km, but sometimes it can be just a light promenade. In winter it might be sometimes too cold for more than 10km.
Who can apply?
Everyone passionate about hiking is welcome.
If you are not trained at all, you might consider not joining the hard ones first, but once in a while there will be hikes suitable for beginners, just read the description for each event carefully.
We are dog-friendly, and if your dog is friendly with people and other dogs, feel free to bring it along!
We expect a "clearly recognizable profile photo", to keep fakes and spammers out.
If there is any reason for not having such a photo, let's talk about it. Send us a message if your application was rejected or not answered, and make sure that we can reply, check your mailbox settings.
Who are we?
The group owner has been hiking in Luxembourg and the greater region since early 2019. Over time, several co-organizers have joined and we're able to organize hikes almost every weekend, unless all of us are out of town at the same time.
If you're interested in organizing hikes as well, let us know, and you may become an organizer in the group
What are we looking for?
We look for beautiful routes, new ones to explore, and the best ones to be repeated occasionally.
And we're looking for nice people to join us, good discussions during the hikes, but also enjoying the silence and the sound of nature.
If you happen to know a beautiful route, we're always open for suggestions, but be aware that we cannot consider every idea and we cannot promise if and when we go somewhere.
What do we expect from you?
- Be on time if possible, and if you're late, let us know immediately. There is some tolerance and we wait for you if we know you're coming, but don't let it become a habit
- Unsubscribe as soon as you know you can't make it, even if it is 5 minutes before or after the official start of the event, it makes checking the participant list much easier and your spot can be taken by someone from the waiting-list.
- Use public transport if we provide information about it, or the carpool to be eco-friendly and reduce the amount of cars that are used
Member contribution
While the membership in MeetUp is free for normal users like you, the group owners have to pay a subscription, which has constantly increased over the years.
I have set up a fundraiser on GoFundMe with the fictitious goal of "1 EUR per group member", and you can contribute whatever you feel comfortable with.
Be it 1 EUR per year, 1 EUR per hike, or 1 EUR per km (just kidding).
Let me know if the link doesn't work or you need to use a different way, like Payconiq or cash.
It's completely voluntary, but it helps a lot to cover the MeetUp subscription and all the small things that add up during the year.
Final remarks
There are comprehensive charters existing in other groups, with dozens of rules, but we try to get around it without that, although most of the listed points absolutely make sense and they are valid here as well, but without the need to state it. Our group, our rules.
The necessary legal minimum to claim:
"All Events are at your own risk, there is no liability by the hosts for any damage. Also, each participant is responsible for respecting the sanitary measures that might be in place at the particular moment, like distance and mask-wearing."
If you made it here, congratulations!
Welcome to YAGHIL, we're looking forward to hiking with you!
Cheers,
Jens.

Tout voir- Wasserbillig to Trier reverse hike with shopping 🛍️ and food 🍗Wasserbillig Train Station, Wasserbillig
With the Germany month is coming up we will do a discovery hike at the Oberbillig Grillhütte 🥓🥩🍗 to see if it's going to be suitable for our BBQ in August. The Dinant hike is sadly cancelled, Mullerthal D is done, the hiking schedule is quite full for next month so let's do this now.
This is a longer hike for those who are up for the challenge (we will do a shortened 15km version of this in August). There will be no actual BBQ this time but to compensate for that there will be delicious food and drinks when we hit Trier. I come up with this custom 28km trail with 🔺 969m 🔻 elevation.
It is not as difficult as it seems, the trail has 3 climbs, at the Mattheiser wood we reach the highest point which is only 390m, it's all downhill from there until Trier HBF.

The hike adjoins 4 nice different forest areas (Perfeist, Roscheid, Mattheiser Wald, Petrisberg) takes us through the hills with amazing scenery to the Moselle region. Upon arriving to Wasserbillig we will take the ferry to the other side, Oberbillig and climb the first hill to the Grillhutte.
After this we proceed towards Konz, those who had enough can exit here after about 10km and take the train back to Lux from the Kreuz-Konz station.
The ferry operates from 11:00 am on the weekend so we will adjust our start to that. No need to look for schedule, it literally comes and goes in every 15 minutes. Bring 1 EUR cash for the ferry, otherwise instead of Oberbillig the boatmen will take you to hell. 😈
Start time: 11:02 Wasserbillig, take the fast train RE5115 towards Trier HBF (leaving GC at 10:33) which gets to WB by this time. We take the ferry right away and get on with the hike. Those who come with car can easily find parking spots next to the station just make sure you get there before us as we are on the clock.
End time: around 16:45 Trier HBF, on this one we are expected to be moving a bit faster with about 5 km/h pace, as I like to say no need to run but we need to move, there is no lunch break planned, please eat before coming the food is at the end.
Most of the stores are open until 18:00 hence we should get there at least 1 hour before to be able to do some shopping, point of interests:
- Intersport Trier (open until 18:00)
- Jack Wolfskin Trier (open until 18:00)
- Tkmaxx Trier (open until 20:00)
If we are slacking we simply cut off the last 6km (instead of going into Mariahof we head straight into Trier through Heiligkreuz). The plan is upon arrival everybody can do the shopping in the city on their own for 1 hour (those who want to leave can do so already as we will end the hike close to the Trier HBF) then we meet up for dinner at the best restaurant in town: https://www.kistetrier.de/
After that we can head over the Irish pub, from there Trier HBF is about 15 minutes walk, there are trains until midnight.
The weather looks quite pleasant 24C max ⛅, cloudy for the day which is just ideal for a longer hike like this.
I expect low participation as we are in the middle of the summer holiday season, the hike will be kept regardless how many signs up.
Have a nice rest of the week and see you on Saturday. 🚶♀️🚶
