Nashville Hiking Meetup

HIKE STATS:

The Mossy Ridge Trail is the longest of the three loop footpaths in the Warner Parks. An ideal training hike, the path leaves the Deep Well trailhead and winds through rich hollows and dry ridges of the Harpeth Hills, making frequent but never sustained elevation changes. Scattered in the woods are big trees and a spring-fed waterfall. At 4.5 miles, the Mossy Ridge Trail qualifies as a full-fledged hike that will not disappoint.

Note that because of changes to parking/access at the Deep Well entrance, the hike is now ~5.5 miles.

Directions to Deep Well entrance of Percy Warner Park:

From the point where Highway 100 begins at Highway 70 near the Belle Meade Post Office, head west on TN-100 1.7 miles to the large stone gates on the left with Deep Well Entrance sign that mark the entrance of Percy Warner Park (Immediately after the Vaughn Gap Rd/Music City Bikeway Stop Light). Turn left from Highway 100 and pass through the gates, staying right when the road splits. We meet at the Highway 100 Trailhead (1st Pavilion on the left - small pavilion after the 1st set of parking areas). If coming from Old Hickory Blvd or further west, the Entrance will be on your right ~¾ miles past the Old Hickory Blvd Red Light between Edwin and Percy Warner Parks (Just before the Vaughn Gap Rd/Music City Bikeway Stop Light).

We have dinner afterward at Sam's Place Belle Meade sports bar (6051 TN-100, Nashville, TN 37205 at the HWY 100 & HWY 70 split).

One of the 3 best hikes in Middle Tennessee, and the most requested by Hiking Meetup members. Meet at Kroger Hermitage and carpool about 100 miles to the trailhead. Please offer your driver gas money. Bring your camera, lunch, and plenty of water.

If you want to meet us at the trailhead, we should be there around 9AM.

Driving directions: I-40 East to exit 288 in Cookeville, head south on Hwy 111 to Sparta and then exit Highway 70 and turn left to go through Sparta. Go to the community of DeRossett, 11 miles east of Sparta, turn right onto Eastland Road (Mourberry Road) and proceed six miles to Scott's Gulf Road (you'll see a sign for "Bridgestone Firestone Centennial Wilderness"). Turn right onto Scott's Gulf Road and proceed two miles to the parking area and trailhead on the right side of the road. Optional dinner afterward in Cookeville at El Tapatio on Jefferson.

• Everyone who volunteers with Second Harvest must create an account on their system. If you do not already have an account, you can click here to create one.

Where is the event?

• Second Harvest Food Bank is located in MetroCenter at 331 Great Circle Road, Nashville, TN 37228.
• Free parking is available on the left side of the building. Enter through the side door by the parking lot. The door will be locked until 5:15pm. It will be locked back again around 5:45pm when we head back to the warehouse. If you think you will be late, leave a comment in the comments section below, and I will notify our Second Harvest event coordinator so they can let you in when you arrive.
• There will be a 3-step process for you to complete once you are inside: 1) check-in for your event on the iPads; 2) make a name tag; 3) sign in on the sign-in sheet at the desk.

What should I bring?

• Bags, backpacks, and purses are not permitted in the warehouse. If you're bringing a bag, there are free lockers available.
• You may bring your phone to take pictures and a plastic water bottle. Bottles of water are available if you forget to bring your own!
• Anyone under 18 will need to provide a Youth Volunteer Waiver which can be printed by clicking here.

What should I wear?

• Closed-toe shoes are required for all volunteers. No exceptions! Volunteers wearing sandals or flip-flops will not be allowed to volunteer.
• We suggest wearing casual/comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little dirty!
