De quoi s'agit-il
Welcome to NLP Zurich, the No. 1 Natural Language Processing (NLP) platform in Switzerland. From boardroom strategies to binary banter, we've got it all. Suit up, code on, and let’s make some geeky business magic! 🎉👔🎮
NLP Zurich was founded in 2017 to stimulate exchange on research and innovation around Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Language Technologies (LT) between academia, startups, enterprises and other key stakeholders actively shaping the ecosystem.
Join the NLP Zurich community to learn and exchange about Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, AI, and related topics.
Our meetups include technical talks, knowledge sharing sessions (such as tutorials or workshops) and networking events.
If you would like to give a talk or host one of our events, please reach out to the organizers!
Some of our events are recorded, and you can watch them on the NLP Zurich YouTube Channel.

Talk Summary
We share our experience creating "Generative Ai Accelerator", a fully private chat companion which uses retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to augment an LLM conversation with additional knowledge from private knowledge bases.
Beyond RAG, we explore various options to retrieve and incorporate external knowledge into LLMs, e.g. crawling, pretraining, finetuning and share the challenges we faced on the way.
To provide Gena as a wholistic solution we provide infrastructure as code with CDK to remove friction when deploying, including crawling and ingestion of custom data.About the speakers
Luca is a Solutions Architect at Amazon Web Services (AWS), based in Switzerland. He focuses on innovation topics at AWS, especially in the area on Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence. Luca holds a PhD in particle physics and has 15 years of hands-on experience as a research scientist and software engineer.Malte Reimann is a developer and builder at heart. He is a Solution Architect in the Modernization, Innovation, and Transformation team in Switzerland. Malte has a background in computer science with research in software engineering and mixed reality. Outside of work, he has tried surfing twice this summer and prefers wind-surfing.
Florian Schottmann: From Low-Resource Hurdles to High-Tech Solutions
Talk Summary
In May 2023, we launched textshuttle.com, the first public translation platform that caters to all official languages of Switzerland. Used by thousands of users weekly ever since, the platform also offers translation from and into two Swiss German dialects. This is a technical challenge not only because very little training data is available, but also due to the lack of standardised spelling and grammar in Swiss German dialects. This talk will discuss the particular challenges we faced and solutions we implemented, drawing from NLP research and practical experience in other low-resource scenarios – such as building specialised translation models for corporate language.About the speaker
Florian Schottmann studied statistics with a focus on machine learning. After finishing his degree, he was researching generalisation in NLP at Prof. Dr. Ryan Cotterell’s lab at ETH Zurich. He’s leading Textshuttle’s research and development team since 2022.NLP Zurich
