Meetup Description: February marks the 200th anniversary of British naturalist Charles Darwin?s birth as well as the 150th anniversary of the publication of his revolutionary work, On the Origins of Species. Darwin [masked]) observed the surprising similarities among different species of tortoises and birds while serving aboard the HMS Beagle on its five-year expedition to South America and the Pacific Islands. Shortly after his return in 1836, he formulated his theory of evolution by natural selection, but did not publish his findings until 1859. Our understanding of the evolutionary process is largely the result of Darwin?s work.
At our February chapter meeting, Professor Robert M. Hazen will be explaining that theory in depth in a DVD presentation. Hazen is a scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington?s Geophysical Laboratory where he researches the origins of life and the emergence of prebiotic chemical complexity. He is also Clarence Robinson Professor of Earth Science at George Mason University. Prof. Hazen has received many awards for his teaching and is the author of 15 books, including the bestselling Science Matters: Achieving Scientific Literacy. He received his B.S. and S.M. in geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1971), and his Ph.D. at Harvard University in earth science (1975).
