Cosa facciamo

Welcome! We're a fiction writing group of like-minded individuals gathering for writing encouragement, advice and support. Read on for more about us and how we roll.

We exist to give emerging fiction writers a place to find writing support, community and opportunities to develop their writing skills. Join us and learn more about finding the right publisher, editing your own work and how to write more frequently. Our workshops are designed to allow new writers to become more confident in their understanding and approach to good storytelling.

Our group was founded in June 2006 in a lovely pub near Liverpool Street with only a few members and now we're a bustling community of 4,000 so we must be doing something right! Most of us are in the process of writing fiction at every stage, but it doesn't matter if you've been writing for years, or just a few short months, we're here for every kind of writer and we'd love to meet you.

On that, we don't believe in groups where everyone is forced to share/contribute/offer feedback *shudder* so we'll never pressure anyone to read before they're ready. Read more from Lisa on what makes a quality writing group

NOTE: All membership requests are reviewed by Lisa or Elizabeth before approval so please answer the questions we've asked in a sentence or two. You can do better than one word answers.

That's all for now. We hope to meet you very soon and happy writing!

*Central* Creative Writing Workshop (with Lisa)

Williamson's Tavern

8,50 £

In these fiction writing workshops, we have 3 writers reading their work aloud for editorial feedback, advice and encouragement. You're very welcome to come along to listen as you'll not be asked to contribute to the group feedback until you decide to do so. Most writers come along to a few sessions before offering feedback, commenting or requesting to read. Observe first and contribute whenever you want to, that's completely all right by us. You'll be surprised by how much you can learn by listening to others' work and feedback.

For people reading, pieces must be 3,000 words or less as you'll have 15-20mins reading time and 10mins of group feedback (30mins total) and all discussion is moderated by your host. We ensure that all writing feedback is constructive and respectful and we've been running these workshops as a safe place for writers since 2006.

If you'd like to read, please post a comment below. Spots are given on a first ask, first given basis with a couple of reserve spots. You must have booked your place before making a request to read.

If you are reading, please bring 7-10 copies of your pages so members can make additional editing notes for you during the reading. Please notify us by commenting below if you have to pull out of reading after your place has been confirmed. Pulling out too many times may result in us refusing your next request to read.

TICKETS: £8.50 and please follow the steps to pay via PayPal when you RSVP

NOTE: Refunds will only be provided if the meetup is cancelled by us. No exceptions. We cannot offer credit for another session if you decide not to attend on the day. Please change your status to NOT GOING if you no longer plan to attend. We often have people on the waiting list and we'd hate for them to miss out.

Location: Williamsons Tavern is located in a courtyard off Bow Lane in Cheapside, closest tube station is Bank. Address: 1 Groveland Ct, London EC4M 9EH. Come to the basement room downstairs.

Creative Writing Workshop (online) with Liz

Link visibile per partecipanti

7,50 £

Join us to hear what other members are working on, get notes on your own work-in-progress (when you’re ready) or just be there to see how we work (it’s fine to come along and listen).

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:

Workshop sessions are open to writers of all forms of FICTION - novels, short stories, scripts etc. Sessions are friendly and the format is simple; three writers volunteer to read their work for applause, discussion and feedback from the group. For these online sessions we'll hear from three readers and so spend longer on feedback for each piece than our in-person, four reader, sessions.

Make a comment below if you'd like to read at this meeting. Slots are assigned by first ask, first served. Only THREE places per meeting. Please be sure to RSVP before requesting a reading spot.

****A reading slot is up to 3,500 words, roughly 15-20 minutes of reading (practice reading aloud beforehand to make sure your piece fills the time slot) and then approx 20 minutes spent on feedback from the group. Feedback is moderated and is always constructive and respectful. PLEASE NOTE: Booking a reading slot but failing to show up will mean removal from the group. READERS, please have your pieces ready to share on screen, but also upload them here, in case you have issues on the night: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1CsgwS93LiIIUsalDkJmhLDVTfYu0yp1U?usp=sharing Many thanks!

LOCATION - After you RSVP you'll see a Zoom link in the event location box. Just click on this at the time and date of the workshop.

Costs: £7.50, please follow the steps to pay via PayPal when you RSVP. Refunds will only be provided if the meetup is cancelled by admin, no exceptions. Also, we cannot accept cash payment on the door.

Special Creative Writing Workshop (with Liz) for First Timers Only

Williamson's Tavern

8,50 £

A creative writing workshop exclusively for writers who have NEVER BEEN to any of our other events before, please feel welcome! We're putting on this event for any writer who finds it comforting to know that everyone there is a newbie like them. We understand how daunting it can be to enter a group where others know each other so we're trying this out!

In this workshop, we invite three first-timers attending to read a piece of their work (up to 3,500 words) for feedback, advice and encouragement from the rest of the group. We can offer feedback on any storytelling form - part of a novel, short stories, screenplays or scripts - so long as it is under the word count. All feedback is constructive and respectful and moderated by your host. We've been holding these sessions as a safe space for writers of all kinds since 2006.

An example of what constructive feedback looks like: 'I liked this section for its energy, but have you thought about pacing it differently in this bit? I found it lagged because of too many adjectives.'
We always refer to what's on the page to give specific examples on the strengths and weaknesses of the storytelling or writing. Feedback is never personal nor offered without some evidence wherever possible.

You're very welcome to come along to listen, as you'll not be asked to contribute to the group feedback until you decide to do so. Observe first and contribute whenever you want to, that's completely all right by us. You'll be surprised by how much you can learn by listening to others' work and feedback.

For people reading, pieces must be 3,500 words or less as you'll have 35mins in total to read your piece and hear the feedback from the group. For the rest of the time, we'll spend talking about our writing projects, struggles and goals, so this session will be more relaxed than our regular workshops. Normally, we'll gather in the bar after the session for a few drinks and a chat too.

If you'd like to read at this workshop, please post a comment below (in the event discussion) 'I'd like to read' and we'll confirm. Spots are given on a first ask, first given basis, with a reserve spot in case someone drops out. If you are reading, please bring 10 copies of your pages so the others can make additional notes and comments for you during the reading. Please notify us ASAP by commenting below if you have to pull out of reading after your place has been confirmed.

You must have booked your place before making a request to read.

TICKETS: £8.50 and please follow the steps to pay via PayPal when you book your place. T&Cs NOTE: This event is for first timers only and we can see who is a first-timer or not. Refunds will only be provided if the meetup is cancelled by us. No exceptions. We cannot offer credit for another session if you decide not to attend on the day. Please change your status to 'not going' if you no longer plan to attend.

Location: Williamsons Tavern is in a courtyard off of Bow Lane in Cheapside, closest tube station is Bank. Address: 1 Groveland Ct, London EC4M 9EH. Take Bow Lane, which is located next to St Mary-le-Bow church on Cheapside. Groveland Court is then on your right. Grab a drink and come down to Martha's cellar.

Writing stretch and sprint (online)

Link visibile per partecipanti

7,50 £

In these sessions we'll gather virtually together to actually sit down and write. Supported by exercises I've pulled together from writing guides and online resources, you'll find your WIP sprinting forward!

For the evening session we'll limber up with a warm up exercise, then delve deeper into an area of writing craft such as characterisation, conflict and theme, sense of place or POV. Once your writing muscles are all warmed up we'll sprint. Writing sprints are a crucial tool in a writer's armoury, releasing ideas you never knew you had and helping you overcome your writing blocks. We'll finish up with an hour of free writing time, where you can take what you've learned and really let your projects fly. Boom!

Costs: £7.50 per session. Follow the steps to pay via PayPal when you RSVP and refunds will only be offered if the meetup is cancelled.

After you RSVP you'll see a Zoom link in the event location box. Just click on this at the time and date of the workshop.

Download the Meetup app to manage your RSVPs on the go: http://www.meetup.com/meetup_api/apps/ and PLEASE DO CHANGE YOUR RSVP IF YOU FIND YOU CAN NO LONGER ATTEND ONCE BOOKED. Many thanks : )
