Practice speaking, learn new vocabulary, and make friends in a relaxed, judgment-free environment. Sessions are led by a qualified English teacher and hosted by a caring Christian community. Everyone is welcome, and no beliefs are imposed — just good conversation and a great place to belong.

We invite you to come and practise your English with people from all over the world in a friendly environment. We are open to all levels from beginner to advanced. We have classes in small groups and you will be placed in one of these groups according to your level of English. Our free conversational English classes are every Thursday evening (except term breaks). If you are coming for the first time, please come on time for registration. Please note: English Corner is for non-native speakers. Homer composed “The Odyssey” roughly around 750–650 BCE (the exact date has been lost to the ages). The first English translation appeared in 1615 (by George Chapman). There have been over 60 English translations since George’s - and all but one by men. Emily Wilson, a professor of classics at the University of Pennsylvania, has studied Homer in depth, and found that existing translations glossed over some of the language and context expressed by Homer in order to appease masculine societal sensibilities. In her own translation, Emily refuses to sugarcoat Homer’s precise wording - and comes in like a phraseology wrecking ball! You’re now invited to read and consider this swashbuckling adventure in its first unadulterated translation.

It is very close to the Mooroolbark railway station therefore the meetups are easily accessible by trains from the city. Once a month Elni hosts our Port Phillip and Bayside socials. It’s a great opportunity to meet others.
