Should we sacrifice ourselves for a war, for an ideology?! Is participating in a war a moral and human necessity? Join us in Paris for an evening of thoughtful conversation over coffee as we explore the themes around the human cost of war. Throughout history, individuals have been called to fight, to believe, and sometimes to die in the name of something greater than themselves. But what does it truly mean to give one’s life for a cause? But it is ambiguous to decide whether that sacrifice holds meaning, or even if it is necessary. The literature of war is very vast. In this gathering, we will reflect on the tension between ideology and humanity and the fragile line between heroism and tragedy, or the human sacrifice of war. This is a themed book club with no required reading, but if you’d like inspiration, here are some works that engage with these questions: * Le soldat désaccordé * For Whom the Bell Tolls * All Quiet on the Western Front * The Things They Carried * Slaughterhouse-Five (And many more that explore war, martyrdom, and the meaning of sacrifice.) Lyric writing weekly group practice. A few object writing rounds to start, get our reps in — a favorite from the canon, Write Better Lyrics by P. Pattinson.* Followed by other exercises. I adapt the program depending on who shows up. *Object writing : a noun picked through a random word generator, a 10 min timer to delve into our sensory imagination and free-flow with this prompt. Hi Badminton Fans! Come and join us every Sunday for a fun session of badminton. There are usually 2 sessions to choose from, **This 11 am - Open Session is open to players of all levels, though mainly intermediate players and below.** **If you are a complete beginner -** Talk to us first before signing up, and we can try to make accommodations and maybe have beginners-only court to begin with, with one of the organisers ready to explain all of the basics, such as serving, scoring, rules etc, as well as some pointers to help you progress. **Which Session To Choose** If you're unsure of your level, sign up for the 11am session to start, or ask us! We will try our utmost to ensure that you play with people of similar levels. **What Do You Need** Don't worry about equipment; racquets and shuttlecocks are provided, and there's no need for a badminton license or insurance. Just bring your indoor sports shoes, and a willingness to meet new friends and have lots of fun. There are changing rooms and showers. **Get There Early** Try and get there early to change and get warmed up so that we can start right on time. We meet to learn and practice American Sign Language and to grow our familiarity with Deaf culture. Facilitated by hearing folks (with a connection to a professional interpreter) using Deaf-created content. People of all ASL skill levels are welcome! As we learn, we hope to connect more with the Deaf community in Central Ohio. Join us as you're able! Come regularly or just once - whatever you're looking for! We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. The Forge does have a full bar and kitchen. There is no cover charge but they do request all attendees to purchase a minimum of ~$20 per person. Soft drink refills are $1 each.
