What is "Silver Democracy"?
Are you looking for an opportunity to practice your Japanese while discussing real social issues? Join our upcoming online discussion event!
Our topic for this session is "Silver Democracy" (シルバー民主主義)—a situation where policies tend to favor the elderly because of their large population and high voter turnout. This is one of the most critical challenges Japan is facing today, but how does it compare to your country?
Whether you are preparing for JLPT N3/N2 or just want to challenge yourself with stimulating conversations in a supportive environment, this event is for you!
Key Questions we will discuss:
- "If you were a politician, would you spend more of the national budget on 'children's education' or 'elderly welfare (healthcare/pensions)'? Why?"
- "Is 'Silver Democracy' a problem in your country? Or is it easier for the voices of young people to be heard?"
- "What kind of ideas do you think are needed to encourage more young people to go out and vote?"
Don't worry if your Japanese isn't perfect! We will provide a vocabulary list and supportive facilitators to help you express your ideas. Let’s learn from each other and have a meaningful discussion!

【About the organizer】
I am a graduate of the University of Tokyo (Faculty of Law) and serve as a mentor for those who wish to explore Japan through the lens of Liberal Arts. Rather than just focusing on language acquisition, I help advanced learners "decipher" the complex layers of Japanese society, economy, and history.
In this session, I will act as a resource and a catalyst for deep analysis, helping you connect the dots between modern phenomena and their structural roots.
みなさん、こんにちは！ このイベントでは、日本語で「シルバー民主主義（みんしゅしゅぎ）」について話します。
シルバー民主主義とは
お年寄り（高齢者）の人口が多く、投票に行く人が多いため、政治（せいじ）が「お年寄りにやさしいルール」ばかりを優先（ゆうせん）してしまうことです。今の日本で、とても大きな問題になっています。
今回のテーマ
イベントでは、つぎの3つの質問（しつもん）について意見（いけん）を話します。
- 質問1： もしあなたが政治家（せいじか）なら、国のお金を「子どもの教育（きょういく）」と「お年寄りの福祉（ふくし）」、どちらに多く使いたいですか？その理由（りゆう）も教えてください。
- 質問2： 「シルバー民主主義」は、あなたの国でも問題になっていますか？それとも、若い人の意見のほうが通りやすいですか？
- 質問3： 若い人がもっと選挙（せんきょ）に行くようにするためには、どんなアイデアが必要（ひつよう）だと思いますか？
こんな人におすすめ：
- 日本語で自分の意見を話す練習（れんしゅう）がしたいひと（JLPT N3〜N2レベルぐらい）
- 日本の社会（しゃかい）や、世界のちがいについて興味（きょうみ）がある人
- 色々な国の人と、楽しくまじめな話をしたい人
