    [What to expect ]
Opinion Sharing: Share your own experiences with payments in Japan.

I am a graduate of the University of Tokyo (Faculty of Law) and serve as a mentor for those who wish to explore Japan through the lens of Liberal Arts. Rather than just focusing on language acquisition, I help advanced learners "decipher" the complex layers of Japanese society, economy, and history.
In this session, I will act as a resource and a catalyst for deep analysis, helping you connect the dots between modern phenomena and their structural roots.

The Psychology of Conformity: Why Japan Vacations "All at Once"

In Japan, major holidays like Golden Week see the entire nation pause simultaneously. But why is it still a challenge for individuals to take personal time off whenever they choose?
In this session, we will move beyond surface-level cultural stereotypes to analyze the "Invisible Layers" of Japanese work ethic, focusing on:

    • The Anatomy of "Meiwaku": Why do Japanese employees feel "guilty" about exercising their right to paid leave? We will examine the psychological pressure of workplace harmony and the fear of burdening colleagues.
    • Systemic Roots: We’ll explore how Japan’s historical communal structures and post-war corporate culture created a society that prioritizes collective timing over individual freedom.
    • The Rationality of Synchronized Rest: Is "taking leave all at once" a restriction of freedom, or a practical social hack to ensure everyone can rest without guilt?

Join us for an in-depth, lab-style discussion where we deconstruct the complex systems of Japanese society.

About the Organizer A graduate of the University of Tokyo (Faculty of Law) with a career background in investment banking. Currently a structural analyst of Japanese society and founder of "Decoding Japan."

Why does Japan still use "Hanko" stamps?

    [About this event]
When you move to Japan, one of the first things you might be told is, "You need a Hanko (personal seal)." While the rest of the world has moved to digital signatures, Japan’s ink-and-red-stamp culture remains deeply rooted in daily life and business.
But why? Is it just tradition, or is there a functional reason? In this intermediate-level Japanese discussion event, we will explore:

    • The history and cultural significance of the Hanko.
    • The pros and cons of using seals vs. signatures.
    • The recent "Hanko-less" movement in Japanese government and companies.

This is a great chance to practice your Japanese while sharing your own experiences and hearing different perspectives.

    Kodokushi (Lonely Death):
    Individual Tragedy or Structural Inevitability?

Is "Kodokushi" merely a personal tragedy, or is it a systemic outcome of modern Japan?
In this session, we go beyond the emotional narrative to analyze the "invisible layers" of Japanese society through the lens of liberal arts. We will discuss:

    • Legal Discrepancy: The gap between the Civil Code (based on family bloodlines) and the rapid rise of single-person households.
    • Urban Challenges: From the aging of "Danchi" (housing complexes) to the isolation in modern high-rise apartments.
    • Economic Shift: The emergence of the "Death Industry," including specialized trauma cleaning services.

Join us for a high-level Japanese discussion to deconstruct the social structures shaping Japan today.
