The Psychology of Conformity: Why Japan Vacations "All at Once"

In Japan, major holidays like Golden Week see the entire nation pause simultaneously. But why is it still a challenge for individuals to take personal time off whenever they choose?
In this session, we will move beyond surface-level cultural stereotypes to analyze the "Invisible Layers" of Japanese work ethic, focusing on:

  • The Anatomy of "Meiwaku": Why do Japanese employees feel "guilty" about exercising their right to paid leave? We will examine the psychological pressure of workplace harmony and the fear of burdening colleagues.
  • Systemic Roots: We’ll explore how Japan’s historical communal structures and post-war corporate culture created a society that prioritizes collective timing over individual freedom.
  • The Rationality of Synchronized Rest: Is "taking leave all at once" a restriction of freedom, or a practical social hack to ensure everyone can rest without guilt?

Join us for an in-depth, lab-style discussion where we deconstruct the complex systems of Japanese society.

About the Organizer A graduate of the University of Tokyo (Faculty of Law) with a career background in investment banking. Currently a structural analyst of Japanese society and founder of "Decoding Japan." My mission is to provide intellectual insights into the Japanese system through the lens of history, economics, and law. This is not a language class, but a forum for deep social analysis and liberal arts.
