Join me for an early spring hike in Nara! We will be traveling the ancient road “Yamanobe-no-Michi” from Omiwa jinja shrine in Miwa, Sakurai City to Isonokami jingu shrine in Tenri.
Yamonobe-no-michi is a part of Japan’s oldest road, the Shinkaido, originating in Tokyo. We will travel along the foot of the beautiful mountains on the eastern side of the Yamato basin.

Meeting Point
- Meet outside JR Miwa station at 10:50am
or - Kintetsu Trsuruhashi platform 1,2 in front of Limited Express ticket booth @ 9:30
We will ride the 9:48 Limited Express and change to a local JR train at Sakurai, arriving Miwa @ 10:47am.
We will leave Miwa station and head to Omiya shrine which holds a festival on the first day of each month. The streets on the approach to the shrine will be full of yattai (food stalls) and other vendors. The shrine will be buzzing with people. You will have time to stop and grab a quick snack or buy local goods here.
After a quick pass-through Omiya shrine, we will leave the crowds behind as we begin our journey on the Yamanobe-no-michi path. The path weaves through forest and small villages, past persimmon and citrus orchards and ancient kofun (key-hole shaped burial mounds).
The path is dotted with large shrines/temples as well as small roadside places to worship. This part of the Yamato plain is where Japanese culture took shape and is full of ancient history.
There are numerous farm stands to purchase mikan, Meyer lemons, oranges, dried persimmons, dried chilis and other local produce. Please bring coins to leave at these unattended roadside farm stands.
We will stop for lunch at the Tenri City Trail Center where you can enjoy meals made with local ingredients and purchase local specialties. You can purchase lunch at the restaurant or eat your bento inside the cozy center or at one of the outdoor tables and benches. The center also houses a gift shop and restrooms.

After lunch we will continue the path on our way to Tenri. We will stop to climb on top of a kofun to take a group picture. Next, we will wind our way through the bucolic countryside and Isonokami shrine (one of Japan’s oldest shrines) in the city of Tenri. The shrine’s flock of chickens attracts a lot of attention.
We will continue to Tenri Kintetsu/JR station through the shopping arcade and disband. For those interested, we will go to an onsen near Tsuruhashi, Osaka aftererwards.

早春の奈良ハイキングにご参加ください！桜井市三輪の大神神社から天理市の石上神宮まで、古道「山辺の道」を歩きます。
山辺の道は、東京を起点とする日本最古の街道「新街道」の一部です。大和盆地の東側に広がる美しい山々の麓を歩きます。

9:48発の特急に乗車し、桜井駅でJR各駅停車に乗り換え、三輪駅に10:47に到着します。
三輪駅を出発し、毎月1日に祭りが行われる大宮神社へ向かいます。参道には屋台や売店が立ち並び、賑わいます。神社内では軽食をとったり、地元の特産品を買ったりする時間もあります。
大宮神社を軽く通過した後は、人混みを離れ、山の辺の道を歩き始めます。道は森や小さな集落を縫うように進み、柿や柑橘類の果樹園、そして古代の前方後円墳を通り過ぎます。
道沿いには大きな神社や寺院、そして道端の小さな参拝所が点在しています。大和平野のこの地域は、日本の文化が形づくられた場所であり、古代の歴史に満ちています。
みかん、マイヤーレモン、オレンジ、干し柿、干し唐辛子など、地元の農産物を購入できる農産物直売所が数多くあります。これらの無人直売所には小銭をお預けください。
昼食は天理市トレイルセンターで。地元の食材を使った食事や特産品の購入ができます。レストランで昼食を購入するか、居心地の良いセンター内、または屋外のテーブルとベンチでお弁当を食べることができます。センターにはギフトショップとトイレもあります。

昼食後、天理へ向けて道を進みます。古墳の上に登って集合写真を撮ります。その後は、天理市にある田園風景と石上神社（日本最古の神社の一つ）を巡ります。神社の鶏の群れは多くの人の注目を集めています。
商店街を抜けて近鉄/JR天理駅まで行き、解散となります。ご興味のある方は、大阪鶴橋近くの温泉へも足を延ばしてください。
