Summer is finally here! Why not get outdoors, move your body, and relieve some daily stress during this beautiful season?

On this trip, we will hike the Akame 48 Waterfalls trail alongside the river in Mie Prefecture.

The Akame 48 Waterfalls is a collective name for a string of waterfalls flowing through Akame-cho, Nabari, Mie. More than 1,300 years ago in Japan, a legendary holy man named En no Gyoja was active here. It is said that the name Akame (red eye) derives from a legend in which he met Fudo-myoo (the God of Fire) riding a red-eyed ox. There are actually many more than 48 waterfalls, but the number "48" is traditionally used to mean "many" in Japanese.

From the 15th to the 18th century, Mie Prefecture was known as the province of Iga. Because the region was surrounded by mountains, people had to engage in intelligence activities to survive, and those who performed these activities were called ninja. The Akame 48 Waterfalls were historically used as a training ground for ninja.

Since the trail runs alongside the river, it is cooler than the Osaka city center. Although swimming is not permitted in this area, you can dip your feet in the water, so why not escape the heat with us?

The path is generally flat and easy to walk.

Details

• Hiking duration: Approximately 4 to 4.5 hours (including a lunch break). The route is primarily flat.

Time Schedule

• 10:00 – Meet at the Akameguchi Station ticket gate.

For those coming from Osaka-Namba Station:

• 08:45 – Take the rapid express.
• 08:50 – Arrive at Tsuruhashi and transfer to the adjacent platform.
• 08:54 – Board the express train bound for Nabari.
• 09:59 – Arrive at Akameguchi Station.

Note: Since we only have a five-minute window to catch the bus, please be punctual.

• 10:05 – Board the bus for the Akame Waterfall bus stop.
• 10:15 – Arrive at the Akame Waterfall bus stop.
• Hiking (Approx. 4–4.5 hours)
• 14:40 – Take the bus back to Akameguchi Station.
• 14:54 – Arrive at Akameguchi Station. Otsukaresamadeshita!

Optional:

• 15:07 – Take the local train to Nabari.
• 15:10 – Arrive at Nabari.

Why don't we go to Nabari-no-Yu Onsen near Nabari Station and heal our tired bodies?

夏本番ですね！この素敵な季節に、外へ出て思いっきり体を動かして、日々のストレスを吹き飛ばしませんか？

今回のイベントでは、三重県を流れる川沿い、「赤目四十八滝」のハイキングコースを歩きます。

赤目四十八滝は、三重県名張市赤目町にある大小さまざまな滝の総称です。1300年以上前、修験道の開祖である役行者がこの地で修行をしたといわれており、「赤目」という名前は、彼が赤目の牛に乗った不動明王に出会ったという伝説に由来しています。実際の滝の数は48よりもっとたくさんありますが、「48」という数字には「数えきれないほど多い」という意味が込められています。

また、15世紀から18世紀にかけてのこのあたりは伊賀国と呼ばれていました。険しい山々に囲まれた環境の中で、生き抜くために諜報活動を行う人たちが現れ、彼らがのちに「忍者」と呼ばれるようになり、赤目四十八滝も忍者の修行場として使われていました。

川沿いの道を歩くので、大阪市内と比べるとぐっと涼しく感じられます。
泳ぐことはできませんが、水辺に足を浸して涼むことができるので、夏の暑さからちょっと逃れてみませんか？
道は全体的に平坦で、とても歩きやすいコースです。

Let’s enjoy a summer visit to Inunakiyama tiered rock pools and Shippōryū-ji Temple, which combines beautiful mountain scenery, cultural history, refreshing river pools, and a relaxing hot spring experience— all within easy reach of Osaka.

The walk begins in the peaceful village of Inunakiyama, nestled in nature beside Mt. Onaru, home to Inunakiyama Onsenkyō. This is the only remaining natural hot spring resort in Osaka Prefecture. We will follow the temple approach (参道 sandō) and pass a magnificent 38-metre-tall tree, believed to be the tallest in Osaka Prefecture, before entering the forested valley.

The trail follows the clear waters of the Kashii River, crossing small bridges and passing a series of waterfalls and natural rock pools. Highlights include Kai no Taki, Ryōkai no Taki, the seven Tower Falls (Tō no Taki), and the sacred Gyōja Falls, where Shugendō practitioners still perform traditional waterfall purification training.

After exploring the temple we will hang out at the river and have lunch. You may put your feet in the river and even wade in places.

We will return to Inunakiyama and go to an optional hot spring to soak at Minamitei Onsen (み奈美亭). Admission is ¥1,200 and includes access to the indoor baths and the relaxing outdoor open-air bath.

Additional Details 📋

Shipporyuji Temple is a historic Buddhist temple nestled in the forests of Mount Inunaki in Osaka Prefecture. Revered as one of Japan’s oldest centers of Shugendō mountain ascetic practice, it continues to serve as both an active place of worship and a destination for hikers, pilgrims, and visitors seeking the area’s natural and spiritual atmosphere.

According to temple tradition, Shipporyuji was founded in 661 CE by En no Gyōja (En no Ozunu), the legendary founder of Shugendō. The temple is now the head temple of the Inunaki branch of the Shingon school and has long been associated with rigorous mountain training. Unlike the nearby sacred training grounds of Mount Ōmine, Mount Inunaki has historically permitted women to participate in Shugendō practice, earning it the nickname “Women’s Ōmine.”

The temple precincts combine religious monuments with the surrounding mountain landscape. Highlights include a large statue of Fudō Myōō, numerous halls and stone Buddhist figures, and forest paths leading to sacred waterfalls where ascetic training has traditionally taken place. The nearby Gyōja no Taki waterfall remains an important site for practitioners of waterfall meditation and purification rituals.

Mount Inunaki is closely tied to the famous “faithful dog” legend. According to tradition, a hunter killed his barking dog after it frightened away a deer, only to discover that the dog had actually saved him from a giant serpent. Deeply remorseful, the hunter became a monk at Shipporyuji, and the mountain was later named Inunaki (“Dog’s Bark”) in memory of the story. Visitors can still find memorials connected with this legend along the approach to the temple.

🌿夏の犬鳴山・七宝瀧寺ハイキング＆川遊び＆温泉♨️
大阪市内から気軽に行ける、美しい渓谷、歴史ある寺院、清流の天然岩風呂、そして温泉を一度に楽しめる夏のお出かけです！

ハイキングは、雄大な自然に囲まれた犬鳴山温泉郷からスタートします。犬鳴山は、大阪府で唯一残る天然温泉郷として知られています。

まずは七宝瀧寺へと続く歴史ある参道を歩きます。途中には、大阪府内で最も高いといわれる高さ約38mの巨木を眺め、その後は緑豊かな渓谷へ入っていきます。

コースは清らかな樫井川沿いを進み、小さな橋を渡りながら、いくつもの滝や天然の岩場、水遊びができる淵を巡ります。

見どころは、

• 開の滝
• 両界の滝
• 塔の滝（七宝瀧）
• 修験道の行者が現在も滝行を行う「行者の滝」

など、自然と信仰が調和した美しい景観です。

七宝瀧寺を参拝した後は、川辺でゆっくりランチタイム。足を川につけたり、場所によっては浅瀬を歩いたりして涼むこともできます。

ハイキング終了後は犬鳴山温泉へ戻り、希望者はみ奈美亭で温泉を楽しみましょう♨️

📋七宝瀧寺について

七宝瀧寺は、大阪府犬鳴山の深い森の中に建つ歴史ある寺院です。日本でも最も古い修験道の霊場の一つとして知られ、現在も修験道の修行が行われています。ハイカーや参拝者、自然や歴史を楽しみたい多くの人々が訪れる場所です。

寺伝によると、七宝瀧寺は661年に修験道の開祖とされる役行者（役小角）によって開かれました。現在は真言宗犬鳴派の大本山であり、古くから厳しい山岳修行の場として知られています。

また、大峰山では長く女性の入山が禁じられていましたが、犬鳴山では古くから女性も修行に参加できたことから、「女人大峰」とも呼ばれてきました。

境内には、大きな不動明王像や多くのお堂・石仏があり、周囲の山々と調和した神秘的な景観が広がっています。森の中には修験者が滝行を行ってきた滝が点在し、中でも行者の滝は現在も滝行や水行が行われる重要な修行場です。

犬鳴山は、有名な「義犬伝説（忠犬伝説）」の舞台としても知られています。

伝説によると、猟師は獲物を逃がしたと思い、吠えた愛犬を殺してしまいます。しかし実際には、その犬は巨大な大蛇から主人を守るために吠えていたことが後になって判明しました。深く後悔した猟師は七宝瀧寺で僧となり、その出来事にちなみ、この山は「犬鳴山」と呼ばれるようになったと伝えられています。

現在でも参道には、この伝説にゆかりのある史跡や供養碑を見ることができます。

Back by popular demand! I did this hike in July and not everyone was able to join due to the waitlist. I want to swim in a river one more time before fall comes.

The heat of summer and clear skies beckon us to the hidden world of shaded canyons along rivers. Let’s enjoy a dip in cool waters on a hot summer’s day.

This easy 7km hike affords multiple views of Kyoto's lush Hozukyo canyon; the opportunity to swim or put your feet in the stunning blue waters of a side canyon of the Katsura river; a unique photo opportunity with a large collection of Japan's quirky Tanuki statues; and a stroll through the Arashiyama bamboo grove and more.

Additional Details 📋
The main event is cooling off in the cool, crystal clear waters of the Kiyotaki river. We will begin our hike at the lush canyon of the Hozukyo gorge overlooking the Katsura river.

After a short hike along the river, we will arrive at the Torokko tourist train station, where you can take pictures with several large tanuki statues.

We will then hike up the serene Kinreikyo side canyon along the Kiyotaki river where we will relax, swim and eat lunch.

After lunch we continue our hike along the river to the rustic mountain village of Kiyotaki, where restrooms and vending machines are available.

Heading out of the village, we will make our way to the back entrance of the famous Arashiyama bamboo forest by way of the historic and less-traveled Saga-Toriimoto, a preserved neighborhood of quaint traditional houses and shops.

After passing by Ogura pond, which is full lotus plants and American bullfrogs 🐸 with their low-pitched bellow, we will enter Kyoto's great bamboo forest of Arashiyama.🎋🎍

7月にもこのハイキングを開催しましたが、キャンセル待ちで参加できなかった方も多かったため、もう一度企画しました！秋が来る前に、もう一度川で泳ぎましょう！

夏の暑さと澄み渡る青空に誘われ、木陰に包まれた渓谷へ出かけませんか？暑い夏の日に、ひんやりとした清流で涼みながら自然を満喫しましょう。

今回の約7kmの初心者向けハイキングでは、京都・保津峡の美しい渓谷を何度も眺められるほか、桂川支流の透き通った青い川で足を浸したり泳いだりできます。また、日本らしいユニークなたぬき像が並ぶスポットで写真撮影を楽しみ、最後は嵐山の竹林を散策します。

イベント詳細 📋
今回のメインイベントは、透き通った冷たい清滝川で涼むことです。ハイキングは、桂川を見下ろす緑豊かな保津峡からスタートします。

川沿いを少し歩くと、観光トロッコ列車の駅に到着し、大きなたぬき像と一緒に写真撮影を楽しめます。

その後、静かな清滝川沿いの金鈴峡へ向かい、昼食を食べたり、泳いだり、のんびりと過ごします。

昼食後は川沿いを歩きながら、昔ながらの山里・清滝へ向かいます。ここにはトイレや自動販売機があります。

さらに、歴史ある風情が残る嵯峨鳥居本を通り抜け、観光客の少ない裏側から有名な嵐山竹林へ向かいます。趣ある町並みや昔ながらの家並み、お店も楽しめます。

途中、小倉池では一面に広がるハスの葉や、低い鳴き声が特徴のウシガエル 🐸 を観察できるかもしれません。最後は京都を代表する名所、嵐山竹林へ到着します。🎋🎍
