Topic for this week:
Can we ever truly understand another person's experience?

We split into groups of around 6 people to enable good conversation.
Discussion prompts:
- Think of a time someone completely misunderstood what you were going through. What made it so hard for them to get it?
- When someone says "I know exactly how you feel," is that ever actually true?
- Can language fully capture an experience, or is something always lost in translation?
- Is empathy a genuine window into someone else's experience, or just our own emotions projected onto them?
- Does a barrier exist between humans, across cultures, genders, or neurodivergence?
- If a perfect brain-scanning technology could let you feel exactly what another person feels, would that count as understanding them?
- Are shared experiences (grief, heartbreak, parenthood) a bridge to genuine understanding, or does each person's version remain fundamentally private?
- Do novels, films, and art bring us closer to understanding others than conversation does?
- If we can never fully understand another person, does that make deep relationships an act of faith?
- Is the attempt to understand someone more important than actually succeeding? What does "good enough" understanding look like?

Topic for this week:
Is it better to be a good person who does nothing, or a flawed person who does great things?

We split into groups of around 8 people to enable good conversation.
Discussion prompts:
- Would you rather be known as a good person or someone who made a real difference? Why?
- Think of a historical figure who did great things but was deeply flawed (e.g. Churchill, Gandhi, Mother Teresa (Steve Jobs???)). Does their impact redeem their character?
- Is a "good person who does nothing" actually good? Can goodness exist without action?
- If someone builds hospitals and schools but is cruel to the people closest to them, how should we weigh that?
- Are we too quick to forgive people's flaws because we benefit from their achievements?
- Does intention matter? Is someone who does great things for selfish reasons (legacy, ego, guilt) less admirable than someone who does nothing but genuinely cares?
- Effective altruism argues that impact is what matters most, that donating to the right charity matters more than volunteering at a local soup kitchen. Is that a satisfying moral framework, or does it miss something?
- Can ordinary, quiet goodness; being a reliable friend, a patient parent, a kind neighbor; count as "doing great things"?
- Is this even the right question? Is the real goal to be a flawed person who does great things AND keeps working on their character?

The Midnight Library is a 2020 speculative novel by Matt Haig about a woman named Nora Seed, who after reaching a breaking point in her life, finds herself in a mystical library that allows her to explore the infinite versions of her life and discover what truly makes it worth living.
From the Guardian:
“The whole novel has the air of a skilful exercise designed to confront depression and anxiety. What’s the best that could happen in your life, and what’s the worst? What can you change, and what can’t you? These are big questions that are difficult to respond to with elegance and depth, and sometimes in moments of Nora’s elation or suicidal lows, the narration lapses into the trite and obvious – “the prison wasn’t the place, but the perspective”; “the paradox of volcanoes was that they were symbols of destruction but also life”. Contrary to the fantastical premise, the novel turns out to be a celebration of the ordinary: ordinary revelations, ordinary people, and the infinity of worlds seeded in ordinary choices."
