Book Club in the Park - Travels with Epicurus
Yoyogi Park, 2-1 Yoyogikamizonocho, Shibuya City, Tokyo 151-0052, Shibuya, JPSocrates Cafe philosophy is back!!
Lets meet for deep discussion on this book and its core themes of life and aging.
A summary of the book will be provided at the beginning and it is fine to attend if you have not read/finsihed the book (though there will be spoilers!)
We will find a place on the grass to sit, so please bring a rug or chair to sit should you wish.
Join us in the month of May for the reading of Travels with Epicurus: Meditations from a Greek Island on the Pleasures of Old Age.
Travels with Epicurus is a 2012 philosophical memoir by Daniel Klein. At 73, faced with a choice between clinging to youth through dental implants or letting his teeth and his vanity go, Klein instead packs a suitcase of philosophy books and heads to the Greek island of Hydra. Drawing on the lives of his Greek friends and philosophers ranging from Epicurus to Sartre, he comes to appreciate old age as a distinct and extraordinarily valuable stage of life.
Whether you're 25 or 75, this is a warm, short read that asks a question worth sitting with: what does a good life look like when you stop trying so hard?
There's no requirement to have read the book, we do a short summary at the start. You can come just for the discussion or some big talk!
We hope you can borrow this book from your local library.
