Stoicism: More Than Just Lifehacks?

詳細

A newcomer to Stoicism doing a quick Internet search may get the impression that it is merely a collection of mental "lifehacks". These promise to make us calmer, more productive, and less anxious, among other things. Quotes are often unsourced, presented without context, and sometimes drawn from other traditions entirely.

For the ancient Stoics however, philosophy was very different. Stoicism was understood to be an integrated way of life, based on specific principles and convictions.

In this session, we'll explore the difference between lifehacks and a more integrated philosophy. What are the pros and cons of tradition vs. eclecticism?

To facilitate a (hopefully) lively discussion, we'll read short extracts from ancient Stoic authors such as Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius. A printout will be provided.

This event is completely free.

**Please note the change in venue.** It is a simple meeting room, but there are vending machines in the centre, so you may want to bring some change so that you can get a drink.

There is a waitlist, so if you need to change your reservation, please do so promptly to allow others enough notice to attend.

The group is non-religious and apolitical, focusing on practical philosophy.

No previous knowledge is needed. Newcomers welcome!
