詳細

Stoicism developed as a philosophy meant for use, not just theory, and few examples show this more vividly than James Stockdale, who lived its principles under extreme pressure.

When he was shot down over North Vietnam in 1965 and parachuting towards captivity, he told himself, “I am leaving that technological world and entering the world of Epictetus” a moment he described in his book Thoughts of a Philosophical Fighter Pilot.

Having memorised key passages of Epictetus’ Enchiridion, Stockdale later said that it was these teachings that helped him survive the next seven and a half years as a prisoner of war.

We’ll look at how Epictetus’ ideas on resilience and courage supported Stockdale under extreme conditions, and how they can help us face the challenges and stresses of everyday life.
