We often hear that people's style/fashion choices can be superficial and consumerist. We also rightly hear criticism against the big industry players' practices. But does this make style and fashion inherently a dilemma of "vanity vs function"? Whether we wear casual hoodies like in a tech startup, or designer pieces from the catwalk, don't we all signal something about who we are and where we belong? We'll discuss.. 1- Why do we appreciate other forms of creativity (painting, design, entrepreneurship, etc) but are more critical of people's clothing choices? 2- Can our style choices carry a deeper effect than just the external looks? 3- How many of our close friends wear completely different styles from us? **New members of all ages always welcome!** The Cheese and the Worms is an incisive study of popular culture in the sixteenth century as seen through the eyes of one man, the miller known as Menocchio, who was accused of heresy during the Inquisition and sentenced to death. Carlo Ginzburg uses the trial records to illustrate the religious and social conflicts of the society Menocchio lived in. For a common miller, Menocchio was surprisingly literate. In his trial testimony he made references to more than a dozen books, including the Bible, Boccaccio's Decameron, Mandeville's Travels, and a "mysterious" book that may have been the Koran. And what he read he recast in terms familiar to him, as in his own version of the creation: "All was chaos, that is earth, air, water, and fire were mixed together; and of that bulk a mass formed-just as cheese is made out of milk-and worms appeared in it, and these were the angels." Ginzburg's influential book has been widely regarded as an early example of the analytic, case-oriented approach known as microhistory. In a thoughtful new preface, Ginzburg offers his own corollary to Menocchio's story as he considers the discrepancy between the intentions of the writer and what gets written. The Italian miller's story and Ginzburg's work continue to resonate with modern readers because they focus on how oral and written culture are inextricably linked. Menocchio's 500-year-old challenge to authority remains evocative and vital today.

I am excited to announce the launch of a series of healthy Persian cooking classes with Zohal. With her background as a street-food trader, she has developed a deep passion for sharing the joy of food. We will be hosting accessible yet delicious cooking workshops in her kitchen. During the class, participants will have the opportunity to cook alongside her and share tips. At the end of the session, guests will be served a delicious meal with tea and refreshments, allowing everyone to relax and socialise. Dish 1: Mirza Ghasemi is a delicious dish made primarily with eggplants, tomatoes, and eggs. Dish 2: Sabzi Ghormeh, a traditional Persian herb stew with 500g of lamb or beef. Our 43rd Spiritual Creatives gathering - in person! Come and join us for a lovely walk and talk around Hampstead Heath. We are meeting just outside Hampstead Heath station (London Overground train) at 11.00 on Sunday the 26th of April. Please note: This is NOT Hampstead Station on the Northern Line! It is the Hampstead HEATH station. After a short break of 20-30 minutes, we then walk back through the Heath, taking the long way round to Parliament Hill, and conclude our stroll back to Hampstead Heath overground station around 2 to 2.30pm. (Please note that you may become so involved in your conversations that you end up losing sight of the main group! Unfortunately, there is no way for you to catch up with us once we have become separated (and we do NOT check our phones for texts or messages during our walk) so please be mindful and conscious to stay with the main group if you want to keep up. This email includes a **unique visitor QR code**, which you’ll need to scan at the ground floor speed gates. Then, head straight up to the **6th floor**, where we’ll be ready to welcome you. 3. Join us on **Saturday 25 April, from 11 am till 4 pm,** for a joyful celebration of **International Mother Earth Day** in **Compton Terrace Gardens**, in front of Union Chapel. Discover the trees, plants, animals and insects that share our space, and learn about their usefulness, symbolism and medicinal properties. Enjoy homemade cakes, tea and coffee while supporting the wonderful work of the gardening team. With games and activities for children, this is a relaxed, family-friendly event connecting with nature and community.

Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes.
