Service Project - Caprock Canyons SP (with Cross Bar BLM land visit)
**\*\*\*RSVP ON MEETUP ALONE DOES NOT RESERVE A SPOT ON THE TRIP\*\*\*** **[About the Park](https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/caprock-canyons)** If you're looking for a stunning outdoor adventure, Caprock Canyons State Park in the Texas Panhandle is an absolute gem! This sprawling 15,000-acre park showcases gorgeous, rugged canyons shaped over time by wind and water, creating some truly breathtaking scenery. One of the coolest features? It's home to the official Texas State Bison Herd – you will spot these majestic animals roaming the landscape! With over 90 miles of trails, there's plenty to explore whether you're into hiking, biking, or horseback riding. The park also features prairie dog towns, camping options ranging from primitive sites to convenient drive-up spots, and spectacular viewpoints like Holmes Creek Canyon. Don't miss the Folsom Historic Site, a beautiful natural bridge, and the intriguing Fern Cave – they all add to your visit! **About the Work** The park rangers would like us to do trailway bridge work along with brushing trails. **About Transportation** Participants are responsible for their own transportation. Carpooling is encouraged; please contact other attendees on this trip to arrange your carpool. **About Lodging** We will be tent camping within the state park, at the South Prong area (no electrical or water). Participants are responsible for bringing their own camping equipment. **About Meals** Participants bring their own breakfasts and lunches. For evening meals, you and your cooking group (TBA) will feed the entire group one evening - this includes bringing and preparing the food, as well as dish patrol (washing pots/pans/etc.) **About Our Day Off** Sunday April 19 is our day to enjoy the park- participants can decide what they want to do during this day. There are usually hikes or other outings organized within the group. ***But wait - there’s more!*** On Saturday April 18, (after Palo Duro SP, and before Caprock Canyons SP) we get to check out a huge area nearby that is not open to the public, and won’t be for at least three years! The [Cross Bar Special Recreation Management Area](https://friendsofcrossbarsrma.org) is big - 11,883 acres. It is the only BLM land in Texas. We have received special permission to have them guide us across private property to get to the preserve. They are meeting us at the gate at 10:30am on Saturday April 18. It is about an hour drive from Palo Duro. The gate’s address is 9610 Brickplant Road, Amarillo, TX. After exploring the Cross Bar, many of us will proceed to Caprock Canyons State Park (2 hour drive) for another week long service project. **TO SIGN UP FOR CAPROCK CANYONS SP SERVICE PROJECT:** 1. **RSVP on Meetup.** The Meetup may show as full, but if you want to come, please sign up. There is usually plenty of turnover. 2. **Wait for approval from Trip Leaders, who might reach out for more details.** Hiking and camping in rugged wilderness areas takes extraordinary preparation, so we strive to make sure this trip is right for you. 3. **Contact information:** Send your name, cell number, and email address to **[stanpeyton@gmail.com](mailto:stanpeyton@gmail.com)** 4. **Complete the Medical Form [https://tinyurl.com/SCMedicalForm2021](https://tinyurl.com/SCMedicalForm2021).** Scan and email the form also to **[stanpeyton@gmail.com](mailto:stanpeyton@gmail.com)** (preferred) or to Stan Peyton’s mailing address below. 5. **Read the Participation Agreement and fill out Page 1** **[https://tinyurl.com/SCSignUpSheet2020](https://tinyurl.com/SCSignUpSheet2020)** 6. **Mail the forms to:** **Stan Peyton** **8408 Hanbridge Lane** **Austin, TX 78736** **VERY IMPORTANT - IF WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE ABOVE PAPERWORK WITHIN TEN DAYS OF YOUR SIGNING UP, YOU WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE TRIP.** ***Don’t sign up unless you are serious about attending.*** **YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:** **-Food and drink for all your breakfasts, snacks, and lunches.** **-6 gallons of potable water** (park water is high in nitrates and unpotable) **-Mess kit (plate/bowl, utensils, napkin)** **-Your cooking groups’ dinner ingredients & containers for leftovers** **-Tent and tent supplies (footprint, tent, fly, mallet, stakes)** **-Implements of sleeping (sleeping bag, pillow, earplugs)** **-Work gloves, eye protection, kneeling pad, trail tools, geologist hammer** **-Day pack to carry to work sites** **-Flashlight/headlamp** **-camp chair** **-Clothes for the weather, including long shirt, long pants, & boots for trail work, and rain gear** **-Personal prescriptions** **-Water bottle** **-Personal First Aid kit (include tweezers)** **-Sunscreen, bug spray** **ASCO group cooking equipment (large pots/pans, etc.) will be brought by Trip Leaders.**
Conditioning Hike - 6:30am and 7:15am - River Place Nature Trail
Conditioning Hike - 6:30am and 7:15am - River Place Nature Trail
Caution: This is an advanced and strenuous hike. We try to keep a quick pace to make this a challenging workout. Known as "Nature's Stairmaster", this strenuous hike is not recommended for beginners. There are 2763 steps with 1800 feet of elevation change - in each direction! You're welcome to join us at 6:30am, at 7:15am, or for both hikes depending on your fitness level. Afterwards, you're more than welcome to join us at Rudy's on 620 for breakfast tacos. We usually have 10-15 people show up for this hike. Hope to see you there! 6:30am - 2 miles (40 minutes) This is the hardest part of the trail which makes it great for conditioning. We will be starting at the Canyon Trail trailhead, hiking to Noggin' Knocker, and back. You will need a head lamp! 7:15am - 5.5 miles (2hrs) We will be starting at the Canyon Trail trailhead, hiking to the Fern Trail Trailhead, taking a 5-10 minute break, and then hiking back to where we started. IMPORTANT NOTE: On weekends, they charge a $10 fee per hiker (and $10 per dog) starting around 7:15am to hike this trail. If you're showing up for the 7:15am hike, be a little early and wait by the trail kiosk, or prepared to pay the fee. If you're already on the trail when they start collecting, they don't make you pay. What to bring with you: Lots of water (preferably with electrolytes) and a good pair of hiking or trail running shoes. If it's wet, or you're new to this trail, trekking poles can be a big help. How to find us: We will be standing near the trailhead kiosk at the Canyon Trail trailhead entrance. NOTE: There are no restrooms or water at this trailhead. (There are bathrooms nearby at HEB or at 8820 Big View Dr, Austin, TX 78730) Don't forget that our Austin Mountaineers store is now open if you would like to order something. 100% of the proceeds from the store go back into prizes and gifts for our group events. https://www.zazzle.com/collections/austin_mountaineers-119260957983235864 **Cancellation policy:** If you will not be able to make the hike, please be polite and change your RSVP to "not going" so that we don't wait for you at the trailhead. # Event Waiver and Release of Liability By confirming your attendance (RSVP) to this event, you acknowledge and agree to the following terms: 1. **Assumption of Risk**: You voluntarily assume all risks associated with participation in this event, including but not limited to risks of bodily injury, property damage, or other losses that may occur during the event. 🌊 Morning Walk at Lake Pflugerville
🌊 Morning Walk at Lake Pflugerville
Join us for a peaceful morning walk around beautiful Lake Pflugerville — one of Austin's most scenic spots just a short drive from the city. This is one of our favorite routes: flat, shaded in stretches, and just the right length for good conversation and a natural reset. Whether you're a regular or joining us for the first time, you'll find easy company and a warm pace. Here's what to expect: **The Trail:** It's a 2.9-mile loop with only about 42 feet of elevation gain — essentially flat the whole way. The surface starts as concrete near the main entrance and transitions to decomposed granite, making it easy for walkers of all paces. **Sun Exposure** The trail has lot's of sun exposure, so sunscreen and a hat is recommended. **The Vibe:** It's a wide, well-maintained path shared by walkers, runners, cyclists, and dog lovers. All paces welcome. We walk, we talk, we breathe fresh air. Come as you are. 📍 18216 Weiss Ln, Pflugerville, TX 78660 🥾 Meet at the large pavillion just across from the main parking lot 💧 Bring a water bottle if desired 👟 Sturdy sneakers recommended By submitting your RSVP to one of our walks, you are agreeing that you have read and understand the [Release of Liability.](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zbJd9vBdM-kNFoVQaL5_nOssZhafCL1MY6IuFRR3DJE/edit?usp=sharing)

Hike Blacklick Woods and The Canopy. Optional lunch after.
Over time I'm hoping to organize a hike to all the Franklin County Metro Parks. This is the first one so if you're interested jump in! We'll start with the Canopy Walk, a cool feature of this park. Climb 100 stairs to the top - or take the elevator if stairs aren't your thing. At the top there are a bunch of things to play on - a rope bridge, a fireman pole that we can slide down - and more! About fifteen minutes there and we'll head to the natural trail, Buttonbush, Maple and Beech Trail for 2.2 miles then do a 1.7 mile loop on the paved Greenway Trail. We'll be passing our cars as we transition if you only want to do the first loop, or the second loop. Pace of around 3.5 mph but no one left behind. If there is an interest we can grab lunch nearby afterward.
