We are back in Berlin for **our fourth event of the new year!**
**📦 WHAT'S THIS ABOUT?**
FTST is a **one-of-a-kind social experience** where strangers come together for an afternoon of meaningful, fun, and deep conversation. It’s also a different & cool way of meeting new people by getting a bit out of your comfort zone and skipping the small talk!
Join us for **games**, **talks**, and **connections** with **friends you haven’t met yet**. Join if you get annoyed after being asked what you do, where you are from, and how long you've been in Berlin every single time you meet someone. If you feel that there are better questions in life, this is the place for you. 🙌
**📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?**
We start with a short & sweet intro talk followed by a few light-hearted group games to warm up. After that, we split you up into small groups and start with the conversation rounds (with 3-4 people). We'll have awesome question cards that will guide the flow of the conversation. You’ll never have to speak in public if you don’t want to.
**🕹 HOW TO JOIN?**
**[Take 1 minute to sign up 👈](https://luma.com/ftst5berlin)**
🔗 On your phone and can't click? Click the link in the **comments** :)
Our events are **limited to 30 handpicked guests** to ensure a cozy atmosphere. We aim to curate events with similar age and gender groups *wherever possible.* If you're invited you'll receive a confirmation within 48 hours via Luma (our ticketing platform)
***Can't make it/event sold out?*** *[Sign up here](https://epicllama.myflodesk.com/berlin) and we'll let you know about the next one 😎*
**🧧 HOW MUCH IS IT?**
The cost to attend is **15€-18€** and includes the following:
⏰ 3 hours of facilitated and curated activities
🍎 Light snacks to keep the energy going (only if outdoors)
👥 A space to meet new people in the least boring way possible
💛 Supporting our mission to spread human connection events around the world
*(🎫 also includes those annoying ticket fees!)*
**🌳 WHERE IS IT?**
We host our events in awesome bars & parks across the city. *We only **reveal the location** to ticket holders **24 hours** before.*
**💛 WHAT THEY SAY**
🗣 “Great way to connect with people in a more meaningful way. Get to the heart of the matter, dive straight into what really counts!” - Matthias
🗣 “F\*ck the Small Talk changes the narrative from "Where are you from?" to "When was the last time you laughed uncontrollably?" and I think that's beautiful.” - Monika
🗣 “I loved F\*ck the Small Talk, I was a little bit nervous at first but they are pros at making you feel comfortable with the rest of the group, the activities are really fun and I enjoyed every second (consider that the one who's saying this is very, very shy). Give it a try!” - Brenda
🗣 "It’s a wonderful experience, it’s like being a kid again, when you were at the park, playing with other kids, and just decided you were going to be best friends for the next hours. Maybe you’ll never see those kids again. But that hour was amazing because you both opened up and trusted each other." - Sara

**🤓 FAQ**
**• What's the age range?**
Most people who come to our events are between 24 and 40 years old. But everyone is welcome to attend! (it's just a reference)
**• Can I come alone?**
Of course, we encourage it :)
**• Can I be late?**
Please don't! Late arrivals will disrupt the floooooooow.
**• I signed up but never got an invite. Why?**
We get a high volume of sign-ups yet we can only invite around 30 people. Please try again next time if do not receive an invite - no hard feelings 💛
**• Why do you charge?**
We value our time and put a lot of love, planning, and effort into creating & designing these experiences. ♥️ This is our project/business and what we give to the world and we think everything should be a fair exchange! 🎈 However, money should never be the reason for people not to attend. If you can’t afford it send us a message!
**• Can I bring my pet llama?**
100% yes, any *well-behaved* pets are highly encouraged as long as you can still focus on connecting with the humans around you! Especially llamas. Please confirm with us beforehand.
**• Can I get a refund if I can't make it?**
Unfortunately, we do not offer refunds. However, feel free to pass on your ticket to a friend or consider coming to the next edition. [and let us know]!

The Lineup for the evening
**Talk 1: Text2SQL in the Wild — Agentic Workflows & Semantic Models on Customer Data**
**Abstract**: Translating a business user's natural language question into a reliable SQL query has huge value for business analysts, but doing it accurately at scale, on messy enterprise data, for complex queries, is incredibly difficult. This talk walks through a production Text2SQL system built on four pillars: semantic models built on customer data, RAG-based semantic search, an agentic verification and correction loop for building the SQL, and an evaluation framework for the entire process.
Raw schema information is not enough for text2sql to work. Rather, thorough documentation including business metrics, synonyms, and qualified example queries, are required. We'll cover how to automate this documentation pipeline by mining query logs, generating descriptions with LLMs, and organizing everything into a knowledge graph and vector search index. From there, we'll dive into the agentic flow that takes a user question and iteratively generates, validates, and fixes SQL against a live database. The agentic framework analyses syntax errors and execution results to help it fix the SQL. Participants will leave with practical takeaways on RAG architecture for structured data, agentic retry patterns, and how to think about evaluation for Text2SQL systems in production.
**Speaker**: Oren Matar
**Bio**: Oren Matar is a principal data scientist and algorithms developer, with a background in social sciences and Bayesian methods. He specializes in NLP and time series forecasting, as well as agentic methods for data retrieval and processing.
**Talk 2: Interpreting and Communicating Statistical Models**
**Abstract**: Extracting actionable insights from complex statistical models remains a challenge, as raw coefficients are often uninterpretable due to nonlinearity, interactions, or hierarchical structures. This talk introduces a unified framework for model interpretation based on the principles of the Marginal Effects project ([https://marginaleffects.com/](https://marginaleffects.com/)). We move away from internal model parameters toward quantities of interest, such as marginal effects and adjusted predictions that translate statistical output into the "natural language" of the data.
We will demonstrate these concepts in Python using the Bambi interpret module, showcasing a seamless workflow for interpreting Bayesian models built on PyMC. The audience will learn how to use the four primary interpretative pillars: Predictions, Comparisons, Slopes, and Marginal Means to compute average marginal effects and visualize conditional relationships. By the end of this session, you will be equipped to turn sophisticated GLMs and multi-level models into clear, rigorous narratives that are easily communicated to stakeholders.
**Speaker**: Juan Orduz
**Bio**: Juan is a Mathematician (Ph.D. Humboldt Universität zu Berlin) and Principal Data Scientist at PyMC Labs. He is interested in interdisciplinary applications of mathematical methods. In particular, time series analysis, Bayesian methods, and causal inference.
**Lightning talks**
There will be slots for 2-3 Lightning Talks (3-5 Minutes for each) between the two main talks.
Kindly let us know if you would like to present something :)

**1.) How to the find Quartier 205 Stadtmitte:**
[https://goo.gl/maps/6Fhft3LbPhcEsQrdA](https://goo.gl/maps/6Fhft3LbPhcEsQrdA)
The exact meeting spot can be seen in the photo below!
We meet on the 1st floor where the trash sculpture can be seen. Look for a meetup sign or organizer wearing a black or red lanyard with "staff" written on it.
**2.) Walk & Talk to the Kerb food court**
The best part. In order to extend the walk we'll stroll along Checkpoint Charlie and from there to the former Sony Center where we are going to enter the Kerb food court.
**3\. How to find the Kerb food court**
[https://maps.app.goo.gl/xJTQg9oBoGL67syz7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/xJTQg9oBoGL67syz7)
Kerb is located at the former Sony Center. The new flagship food court of Potsdamer Platz. Most likely we will be sitting upstairs on the first floor next to the bar (take the stairs to the left).
***Best ways to get there:***
1\. U2 \(subway\):
Get off at Potsdamer Platz and walk around 7 min to Kerb.
2\. Bus M41 or M85
Get off at Potsdamer Platz and walk 5 min to Kerb.
4.) Public transport to Tempelhofer Hafen
5.) Watching the fireworks of the harbor festival! 🎆
*Who is this meetup for:*
1\. Asians who want to practice German and/or English\.
2\. German speaking individuals who are studying \(preferably\) Japanese\, Korean\, Mandarin or Cantonese\.
3\. Anyone who is interested in cultural exchange and wants to socialize\.
*What you can expect:*
1\. A professionally organized meetup that can adapt to any changes given the current situation\.
2\. A collaborating venue where you can further socialize with other members\.
*important: This event is held at the same time and meeting location like the "Networking & Language Exchange - 🍖international🍻" one. So I'm basically organizing 2 events at the same time which means that you can expect way more people than on the list.*
***
Whenever you attend a meetup, the most common as well as first question you get is: "Where are you from?"
You probably heard this question a million times. Well, at least I did.
From my own experience of attending over 200 international meetups in various countries such as Germany, Japan, Australia and Thailand, I can tell you that asking for the name is a better approach.
“A person’s name is to that person, the sweetest, most important sound in any language.” - Dale Carnegie
If you really want to connect with like-minded people you should remember their name, but you don't have to remember every persons name you've talked you. Be picky about that, don't be me who can somehow remember everyones name easily.
Don't tell yourself sth. like "I'm bad at remembering names." It's all about developing the habit of asking for a name and keep the conversation going on.
Furthermore, you want to learn German or any other language. Learning the local language is crucial to connect with the locals and developing a true friendship.
This can be accomplished with immersion. My goal is to inspire you to go out of your comfort zone and improve yourself each time you join this meetup.
Chinese 中文 Chinesisch/German 德语 Deutsch Meetup! (Every 2 Weeks!)
Hey fellow Dragons!
++++++++ Interested in Chinese/German? ++++++++
Learning Chinese/German and need to practice or find language-tandem partners?
Interested in cultural exchange?
Want to meet awesome internationals?
…Or just want to get tips on where to find good Chinese food in Berlin?
Whatever the reason, come join us! The more the merrier: such is the Chinese way!
++++++++++++++++ New Website ++++++++++++++++
We have our own community website now. It's hosted in Germany with better privacy guidelines and allows us to have more features than we currently have here.
https://www.dragon-descendants.de/
Please think about registering there too and if you are awesome, use the RSVP function there too.
In the long run we do plan to migrate permanently to the new site.
++++++++++++++++ Our meetup structure ++++++++++++++++
Our meetup is relatively unstructured. Groups often form organically and evolve and move throughout the evening consisting of members learning Chinese/German, members who are fluent/native, and the rest who are here to socialize in whatever language they're comfortable with and jumping into whichever conversation they find themselves in.
We try our best to fulfil everyone's expectations so we can all benefit from the meetup and have a good time; if you have any suggestions or ideas (such as outings!) please don't hesitate to let us know! :)
+++ No time on Thursday's? +++
We meet every second Thursday, but we sometimes have other events, which are not regular and occur on different days/at different locations. Stay tuned for announcements!
Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones :)
Cheers & 回头见

Join us as we get together to see Paul Rudd in the latest comedy-drama-musical from John Carney, POWER BALLAD! The film follows a washed-up wedding singer, a fading boy band singer and a stolen hit song. Here’s a description, trailer and plan for this event:
DESCRIPTION: Rick, a washed-up wedding singer, and Danny, a fading boy band star, bond over music and a late-night jam session. When Danny turns Rick's song into a hit, Rick sets out to reclaim the recognition he believes he deserves. Power Ballad is written/directed by John Carney, the master of the modern musical and creative mind behind Once, Begin Again and Sing Street! It stars Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas, Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu and Jack Reynor.
BUZZ & ACCLAIM: The film premiered to rave reviews at this year’s Dublin International Film Festival where critics call it “a sure-fired crowd-pleaser” that “just might be the feel-good hit of the year!” Others say, “Paul Rudd delivers a career-best performance in this charmer” that’s both “hilarious and deeply moving!”

Judgement of Paris - House Wine
This is the 50th Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris. Significantly, in 1976, California wines unexpectedly outperformed French wines in a blind tasting with nine French judges, challenging the perception that only French wines were of the highest quality. This event helped elevate the status of California wines on the global stage and is considered a pivotal moment in wine history.
House Wine, in Worthington, modestly, recreates that moment in history with a tasting both American and French wines in a fun, casual atmosphere. Come at 6:45, pay your fee at the register and join your friends for this "Judgey" tasting. https://www.wineenthusiast.com/culture/wine/the-judgment-of-paris-turns-40/
Arrive when you can and we'll have a table for gathering. Feel free to bring your own food as it is welcomed at this local gem or order from the newly opened Worthington Inn, or local favorites such as Dewey's, Everest, Jet, Worthington Tavern and The Whitney. Each person pays their tasting fee, typically $15, and gets their wine glass, then approximately five pours of the wines being served.
**Parking is tough**. Try the second lot behind House Wine accessed by the land by the back parking lot or the municipal lot one block north of House Wine.
**Waiver and Liability and Attendance Policy.** Participation by you and your guests means you agree to the Waiver of Liability and Attendance Policies on our Group Page. People who have two more or Attendance policy violations are subject to removal from the group.

Pistacio Vera Mid-Morning June Birthdays Tea
Happy Birthday to all June birthday people! I put this on the schedule because it's my birthday month, and this is my favorite place; it's also Dave Koczur's (MAFIA meetup leader) birthday on June 8; if you who are reading this have a June birthday as well, tell us in the Comments!
For anyone off work or with a flexible schedule, come to Pistachio Vera in German Village for a tea and pastry. We will try to get a table outside. If convenient, you could put a fold up chair in your car in case we can all sit outside but we run out of chairs.
