Discussion: "Is 'the self' a path to understanding - or an obstacle?"
***Is a strong sense of personal identity helpful in understanding the world and others?*** *Or does it inevitably distort what we see? How much can we shape our identity and how should it be done?*
In this session of **Marginal Thoughts**, we will consider the role of personal identity - 'the self' - in making sense of the world. Before our different selves make sense of this topic, we'll read three short pieces:
* A short story by Andy Weir: ["The Egg"](https://www.galactanet.com/oneoff/theegg.html) (\~10 min; alternative: [animated adaptation by Kurzgesagt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6fcK_fRYaI))
* An essay by Paul Graham: ["Keep Your Identity Small"](https://paulgraham.com/identity.html) (\~8 min)
* A poem by Stanley Kunitz: ["The Layers"](https://poets.org/poem/layers) (\~2 min)
In these, Andy Weir diagnoses the universe with multiple personality disorder, Paul Graham urges people to do a 'Marie Kondo' on their identities, and Stanley Kunitz likens himself to a lasagna.
**How to prepare**
Please read all the materials in advance. As you do, try to identify at least one point of curiosity, confusion, or uncertainty - these will be natural starting points for our discussion.
**What to expect**
This is an in-person, conversational meetup in English. The goal isn't to debate, lecture, or "confess" - it’s to explore ideas and leave with better questions than we arrived with.
**Optional stuff for the extra curious**
Julia Galef in her book ["The Scout Mindset"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scout_Mindset) examines the relationship between identity and truth-seeking, and expands on the idea of keeping one's identity small (the most relevant chapter is also the topic of [this animated short](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxqTOm3TzsY)). When it comes to identity, Borges made it too difficult to choose a single piece (e.g., "The Nothingness of Personality", "Borges and I", "The Other", etc.). For the interested, [this Marginalian article](https://www.themarginalian.org/2017/04/03/the-nothingness-of-personality-borges/) offers a tempting rabbit hole of links.

🌟 **Panel Discussion (in German!): “Building an Agency — But How?”**
Three Perspectives on Growth, Team, and Positioning in the Age of AI
Not all agencies are created equal. And there’s no single right way to build a business.
At the next Gründerio Meetup, we’ll be talking with three agency owners who have taken very different paths.
The panel will cover:
• How and when it makes sense to make the leap from freelancer to agency
• What changes when you suddenly have a team
• Which structures and systems really help with growth
• How agencies position themselves today in the age of AI
• And why not everyone has to scale—but everyone should make a conscious decision
🎤 Joining us are:
Johanna Lederer (Studio Ardē)
From freelance beginnings to her own agency
Mathias Böhm (Artline Design)
Insights into building and leading a larger team, as well as the challenges that come with growth.
Lauren Klocker (Boxquadrat)
A co-founder setup with its own dynamic
Afterward, there will be time for questions, discussions, and networking in a relaxed atmosphere.
🤝 **Exchange:** Connect with like-minded people in a relaxed atmosphere, exchange ideas, and learn from the experiences of others.
🍹 **Chilled Atmosphere:** We want you to feel comfortable and enjoy yourself. If this leads to a new business connection or collaboration – even better!
🚀 **Our Goal:** Not only do we aim to help you meet new people and build meaningful connections, but we also want to provide you with practical tools to simplify your entrepreneurial journey and optimize your business.
We’re excited to welcome you to our next event in Vienna. Let’s learn, grow, and shape the journey of self-employment together.

Blood on the Clocktower
**Hello there! I would like to ask everyone who RSVPs to send me a message here on Meetup and change your profile setting to allow me to reply - this is needed because the message sending to people who RSVPd on Meetup proved to be a disaster and a few days before the event I would like to send you the exact address and ask you to confirm your RSVP. Thank you!**
*In the quiet village of Ravenswood Bluff, a demon walks amongst you...*
*During a hellish thunderstorm, on the stroke of midnight, there echoes a bone-chilling scream. The townsfolk rush to investigate and find the town storyteller murdered, their body impaled on the hands of the clocktower, blood dripping onto the cobblestones below. A Demon is on the loose, murdering by night and disguised in human form by day. Some have scraps of information. Others have abilities that fight the evil or protect the innocent. But the Demon and its evil minions are spreading lies to confuse and breed suspicion. Will the good townsfolk put the puzzle together in time to execute the true demon and save themselves? Or will evil overrun this once peaceful village?*
Everyone is welcome, we will explain the rules before the game! One round is roughly 30-90 minutes and we plan to play several rounds. The language of this event is English. I will send the exact address to the people who RSVP'd - it will close to Westbahnhof.
Please only RSVP if you intend to join.
See you there! :-)
Free Meditation & Yoga – just show up – we start at 19.00 on Thursdays
Hello there!
We'd like to welcome you to our FREE Sahaja Yoga meditation meetings hosted by Wolfgang, Hamid, Anil, Shantanu & friends which take place in Vienna – 7pm Thursdays.
With Sahaja Yoga Meditation we normally sit on chairs to achieve yoga, effortlessly & spontaneously. So there is no need for mats and no special clothing required.
We are all volunteers of a Charity association and have many years of experience in offering free Sahaja Yoga Meditation classes.
All across the globe, many are seeking new sources of energy. Meanwhile, the most transformative energy of all is hiding in plain sight, within us. It's natural, sustainable, and infinitely renewable. It's called inner kundalini energy. And everyone already has it — everyone!. It is often likened to an inner feminine or motherly energy which automatically knows about us and what is needed to help us restore balance and harmony within our subtle being. It works spontaneously, effortlessly, organically and cannot be paid for.
The classes are designed to help those attending get into a genuine meditative state, which can be felt tangibly. It is quite effortless and spontaneous.
The free classes feature introductory talks, video's, practical workshops and general question and answer opportunities, making them perfect for seekers trying to establish a state of yoga, and they are available across Vienna most evenings and throughout Austria.
The idea is that you don't do yoga - you Achieve Yoga!
Sahaja Yoga Meditation is a simple, time-honored technique. It helps those who enjoy it, reduce stress and increase wellness and health holistically. It brings better focus and helps people become more centered and better balanced. Anyone can do it.
Founded by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, Sahaja Yoga Meditation is a world wide movement for peace and self awakening.
All the meetings and classes are free of any charge. Each week we go through simple meditation techniques, often with guided meditations to help reduce stress and achieve the peace of true meditation.
We share tips on how to help stay in balance during the day and how to meditate at home. The meditation is based on connecting with the inner chakras (energy centres) and balancing the subtle body.
The tradition and aims of meditation are explained which in essence is to be in the present with no mental activity or thoughts about the past or the future.
Occasionally there are 1 day retreats to help those interested, deepen their individual experience and hear advice and tips from those who have been practicing for some time. It’s ultimately all about getting into ‘thoughtless awareness’, a natural state of being.
10 Reasons to try-out Sahaja Yoga Meditation in Vienna in 2015
It’s easy.
You don’t have to spend years living in the mountains to achieve enlightenment. You don’t have to give up anything or spend weeks in silence. You don’t have to learn mantras or wear special clothes or even try to clear my mind. The meditation simply happens spontaneously. The classes are easy and fun, and as long as you keep up your daily ten minutes of meditation you find you are able to achieve a deep and peaceful meditation on a regular basis.
It’s free.
You don’t pay for your meditation. There are no catches, and there are no hidden expenses. If you missed attending classes one week, it doesn’t matter. You just picked up the classes again when you could manage it. It is simply the generosity of spirit of other Sahaja Yoga meditation practitioners that allows Sahaja Yoga to be taught to whomever desires it, at no cost.
You can see results.
You feel relaxed and you feel a deep sense of calm. Now you can also feel your chakras (energy centres) and through the meditation techniques learnt along the way you can understand the vibrations of your own energy centres. If you feel unwell you meditate and use the techniques you’ve learnt to heal your chakras, and you can then feel the centres clearing, and as a consequence your health improves.
It’s all-inclusive.
All the major religions and their core teachings are acknowledged and respected in Sahaja Yoga. No one’s spiritual journey is right or wrong. And through meditation the wisdom of all the great gurus and saints is easily revealed and understood. In fact, you’ll find that since you’ve been meditating you’ll come to understand and appreciate the teachings of great teachers such as Lao Tse, Buddha and Mohammed.
You’re your own boss.
You meditate and introspect at your own pace. You don’t have to keep up with others, or feel pressured into doing things you’re not comfortable with. You are your own teacher, your own guru, your own master. This technique of meditation empowers you and enables you to help yourself. You don’t have to rely on anybody else. Of course, there are many people who practice Sahaja Yoga Meditation who can teach you a great deal about the yoga & meditation and its various techniques. However, all that you need is ultimately within you.
It’s everywhere.
Sahaja Yoga is practiced in almost every country in the world. So, no matter where you travel you can always locate a local Sahaja Yoga Meditation programme that you can attend. Whenever you get the chance, and no matter where you are, You try to link up with other Sahaja Yoga practitioners and enjoy a collective meditation. (Meditating with others is a much deeper and more powerful experience than meditating alone.)
It’s portable.
You don’t need to take anything with you to meditate: no mats, no potions, no special clothing or books. You can meditate anywhere – in a quiet room or on a noisy bus; at the beach or watching a movie. Thoughtless awareness (the state of meditation) is easy to achieve if you keep meditating daily, and it can be achieved in almost any situation.
It makes sense.
Everything you’ll learn will make sense. There is a lot of common sense in Sahaja Yogameditation, and even though not everything was known to you (for example, the chakras and their respective qualities), once you have a chance to learn more about the meditation, it feels very natural and comfortable.
Everybody does it.
When you begin a hobby or join a new group, you often find that there are particular types of people who are in the group with you. For example, some groups attract younger people, others older folk; some groups have a lot of people who are wealthy, or people who live in a certain part of town. In Sahaja Yoga you will find people from every walk of life, from every demographic – male and female, young and old, rich and poor, every shape, size and colour, with varying interests, languages and beliefs. You don’t have to be a certain type of person to do Sahaja Yoga meditation. It is one of those rarities: something for everybody.
You feel good.
Without fail, every time you sit down to meditate you feel better. Whether you manage to have a deep meditation or not makes no difference, and as a consequence your family and friends are reaping the benefits.
So there you have it......ten reasons......

Sex! (The Topic, Not the Activity- Sorry) FWM Monthly Pub Moot!
**Monthly "Pub Moot" and Lecture Series- *in English***
**This Month’s Topic:**
**Eros and the Sacred: The Origins and Meaning of Sexual Reproduction**
*Why does sex exist at all? From a biological standpoint, sexual reproduction is expensive, risky, and complicated — so why did life evolve it? In this talk, Nuphar explores the deep origins and biological logic of sexual reproduction and asks what this tells us about desire, polarity, and human connection. Drawing on her background in biology, she examines how the imperatives of reproduction have shaped human behaviour, relationships, and culture — and what the Western Mysteries and pagan traditions have long understood, symbolically and spiritually, about the sacred interplay of masculine and feminine principles.*
Pub Moots will generally be held on the **4th Wednesday** of every month. Sometimes there will be exceptions based on what is going on, so make sure to check back here on Meetup for the exact information
All are welcome- experienced practioners, newbies, merely curious, Wiccans and Wiccan-curious and practitioners of similar traditions and those who have no idea why they want to come but just do and even those who don't know a thing but simply like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings and suchlike... :-)
**General schedule of the evening:**
19:00- 19:30- Meetup, time to eat and socialize
19:30- 20:30- Lecture and Discussion
20:30-21:00 and beyond- Open discussion and more socializing- eat, drink, and be merry!
**Attendance is free** but you will need to buy something at the pub. :-)

* If all tables are full, look for a Facilitator. We will find a way to get you into a game!
* There is a flat $3 cover charge for events at Tabletop.
