Free ESL Practice and Support
Free ESL Practice and Support
St. Timothy's is excited to offer support to newcomers in Canada. Our goal is to provide conversational language practice through informal instruction and feedback in a welcoming and diverse community. We invite all new immigrants, English language students, visitors to Canada, parents of children temporarily attending schools in Toronto, foreign university students, and anyone looking to enhance their language skills. We aim to build community where friendships can flourish, in order to help participants establish meaningful connections, learn about life in Toronto, and access practical resources as you settle in to this new city and country. We begin every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with a time to socialize and connect. Our formal program begins at 10:30 a.m., and each week we will have different activities and topics, including practicing English conversation, reading short articles, learning about common pronunciation and grammar mistakes made by ESL speakers, etc. Our volunteers would love to get to know you and offer gentle and constructive feedback to help you improve your English! We also offer Individual career mentoring, including job search, mock job interviews, and helping you improve your resumes and cover letters.
[In-person] Curiosity Café – Ethics of the Family
[In-person] Curiosity Café – Ethics of the Family
Our families, or lack thereof, are one of the first things we become aware of. For better or worse, as children, most of us rely on family to meet our needs and help us learn how to exist in the world. Their presence or absence shapes our behaviours and affects how others treat us. We may be judged by what our parents do for work, how our children behave, whether we have strong or weak family values and ties, or our ability to fulfill familial obligations. ‘Family’ shapes how we come to learn about the world, how we relate to one another and to ourselves, and the goals we set. Through our lived experience, the stories we’re told, and the cultural values many of us have inherited, ‘family’ has become a relational category whose existence we assume is natural; that is, family units have always existed and always will. But could a world without families exist? Statistically, families are the epicentre for cases of violence and abuse, and perpetuating economic inequality. Given this, would we be *better off* in a world without family as we know it? Join co-moderators Fallon Taylor-Kanary and Sophia Whicher at our next Curiosity Café, where we’ll explore the following questions: * Who do you consider to be family? Why? * How do you feel when you think about family? * What function does family play in our lives? * Why are families sites of so much violence? * How is contemporary infrastructure (architecture, policies, institutions, etc) designed around families? * How would our relations be different if our material and economic conditions weren’t shaped or mediated by the family? * Would a world without families *necessarily* be a world with less love and care? **Space is limited!** **Please obtain a “Pay-What-You-Can” ticket from Curiosity Café at [this link (click here)](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/curiosity-cafe-ethics-of-the-family-tickets-1987289282741) to attend this event. You need a ticket to be admitted.** See the above link for more info about tickets and other options including a limited number of free tickets. Come and hang out with us, grab food, and read through our handout from 6-6:30pm. Our structured discussion will run from 6:30-8:30pm with a 10 minute break in the middle. Hope to see you there! ***__________________________________________________________________*** This event is brought to you by [Being and Becoming](https://beingnbecoming.org/), a Toronto based non-profit. We aim to create community around exploring everyday concepts and experiences so that we may live more intentional, thoughtful, and meaningful lives. We use philosophy as a tool with which we can come to a richer understanding of the world around us. By offering activities, spaces, and other opportunities for conversation and co-exploration, we hope to enable the meeting and fusion of individuals and their ideas. Everyone is welcome, regardless of background: indeed, we believe the journey is best undertaken alongside explorers from a variety of disciplines, cultures, backgrounds, and experiences. Find out more about Being and Becoming [here](https://beingnbecoming.org/). About the Curiosity Café Series: For those of you who haven’t had the opportunity to join us at our Curiosity Cafés and are wondering what they’re all about: every two weeks, we invite members of our community to come out to the Madison Avenue Pub to engage in a collaborative exploration of our chosen topic. Through these events, we aim to build our community of people who like to think deeply about life’s big questions, and provide each other with some philosophical tools to dig deeper into whatever it is we are most curious about.
CENTRAL MISSISSAUGA 🇨🇦 - Practical Philosophy Meetup
CENTRAL MISSISSAUGA 🇨🇦 - Practical Philosophy Meetup
**🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?** Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎 Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic. The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌 **📓 HOW DOES IT WORK?** Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://tally.so/r/81LP4A), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going. When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. **General Meeting Agenda** Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: * 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the official start. * 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines. * 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them. * 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo. * 21:00 - The official meeting is over but it’s a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other. **🧧PRICING?** Practical Philosophy is operated entirely on voluntary donations! If we are meeting in a café, buy a beverage! Donations are 100% voluntary, but they help us to bring the gift of deep conversation to people around the world. If you'd like to support, you can [donate here](https://www.zeffy.com/en-CA/donation-form/donate-to-practical-philosophy)! (Practical Philosophy is a registered Canadian charity) **💛 WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY** **🗣** “I feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting what’s right and wrong” - Ekam 🗣 “I got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.” - Daniel **🤓 FAQ** * **Do I need to study or read anything to attend?** No preparation is necessary. This isn’t a study of other thinkers. We want to know what you think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and we’ll discuss it. * **Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?** The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school. * **Is it mostly men that attend?** Surprisingly, no! Although often, philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we don’t meet in any dark rooms. * **Can I come alone?** Of course you can, we encourage it :) * **Can I be late?** Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation. * **Where do you meet?** The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/81LP4A) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/). 🤝**POLICY** To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment. **PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY CLUB - Philosophy, everywhere. ✨** We started in Practical Philosophy back in 2021 and there are now 50+ chapters in 25+ countries, including Canada, Spain, Japan, Mexico and many more! 🗺️ **\*\*\*** **Join our [Mississauga Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/81LP4A) 👈** **Follow us on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/practicalphilosophyclub/) 👈** **Our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/) 👈**

**KAP × Halotherapy at the Salt Palace** A deeply nourishing experience where **[Kundalini Activation Process® (KAP)](https://www.kapacademy.com/)** meets the gentle, purifying medicine of **halotherapy**. Held within the serene, salt-infused sanctuary of the Salt Palace, this offering invites you into a state of deep regulation, presence, and inner remembrance. The combination of energetic activation and salt therapy creates a uniquely supportive field—one that allows the body to soften, the nervous system to unwind, and the soul to reconnect with its natural rhythm. Past gatherings in this space have been described as grounding, expansive, and profoundly restorative. Many participants leave feeling lighter, clearer, and more connected—to themselves, their breath, and their inner truth. ***This is not something you “do.”*** ***It is something you allow.*** During the session, you will lie down comfortably while I facilitate the Kundalini Activation Process®. The salt-rich air gently supports respiratory health and cellular cleansing, while the energetic transmission supports the body’s innate intelligence to move, release, and recalibrate in its own way. **This experience may support:** * Energetic activation and awakening * Nervous system regulation and emotional release * Deep states of presence, stillness, and self-awareness * Respiratory nourishment and cellular cleansing through halotherapy No prior experience with KAP or energy work is required. Each session unfolds uniquely, guided by your body and nervous system. If you feel a quiet resonance with this offering, trust it. That subtle pull is often the beginning of remembrance. Spaces are intentionally limited to preserve the integrity of the energetic container. ♾️♾️ **Halotherapy with Heart and Healing** Imagine stepping into a serene sanctuary, where the air feels alive with healing energy. Here, your breath deepens, your thoughts quiet, and your spirit feels held. This is the gift of **halotherapy**—a gentle, natural practice that nurtures you from the inside out. Our KAP session takes this powerful experience further by guiding you into *inner awareness* within the unique environment of a salt room. It’s a union of energies you may not have encountered before, as I’ve yet to find another KAP session facilitated in such a nourishing space. This exquisite salt, sourced from the ancient Punjab region of Pakistan, has a story as timeless as the earth itself. Formed from a primordial sea over 250 million years ago, the dense salt deposits born from that landlocked sea are infused with the natural pink hue of ancient microorganisms. Himalayan salt, untouched and 100% natural, is rich in over 84 precious minerals, including iodine, magnesium, and potassium—elements that nurture and replenish the body. **[Salt Palace](https://saltpalace.ca/)** is designed to mirror the natural microclimate of mountain salt caves. Thanks to our state-of-the-art halo generator, the healing potential is amplified through a delicate aerosol of dry salt, allowing you to fully absorb its benefits. The microscopic salt particles penetrate deeply into your lungs and skin, delivering therapeutic effects where they are most needed. This gentle, spiritual process aligns with your body’s natural rhythms, creating a space where true transformation can take place. Join us at the **[Salt Palace](https://saltpalace.ca/)** for a transformative KAP experience designed to awaken your energy, deepen your breath, or simply nourish your soul, embrace a journey of profound renewal and gentle healing as the sacred essence of Himalayan salt to bring light, love, and balance into your life. ♾️♾️ **[Kundalini Activation Process® (KAP)](https://www.kapacademy.com/)** is a powerful and life-changing experience that helps you unlock your true potential. Imagine going on a deep adventure within yourself, finding hidden treasures of your personality and abilities that you didn't know existed. With KAP, you learn to light up the energy inside you and connect with the life force present in all living things. This process guides you to break free from old habits and beliefs that have been holding you back, allowing you to live in new and fulfilling ways. KAP is the ***path of surrender***, it's about letting go rather than trying harder, different from practices like kundalini yoga, tantra, or chi gong. Energy moves from the top of your head down to your base, clearing blockages and healing old wounds on its way. In this session, you'll receive a "***double transmission***" - a powerful mix of Kundalini energy and non-dual consciousness. This fusion will enliven your life force energy, revitalizing your body, mind, and energy flow. Simultaneously, your awareness will expand into the realm of non-duality, enriching your perception of the unity of all beings. **HOW IS THE SESSION?** I invite you to find a cozy spot to lie down on a yoga mat, where you can fully sink into this experience. Once you're settled, I'll start playing some specially chosen music that helps your brain relax more deeply. During our time together, I'll focus on your energy centers, also known as chakras, and specific meridian points on your body. My goal is to use gentle touch and light pressure to help clear any energy blocks and support your overall well-being. Rest assured, the pressure will always be soft and comfortable to ensure you feel safe and at ease throughout our session. **WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT DURING A SESSION?** Walking into a KAP session, you leave the outside world behind. What happens next is nothing short of amazing. **Energetic Vibes**: While you're lying down, you might start feeling a powerful energy moving through you. It's like an electric wave that fills you up, making every part of you come alive. **Visual Adventures**: Your inner sight, or "third eye," wakes up, and suddenly, you're seeing vivid images, colors, and maybe even going on visual journeys to places beyond your wildest dreams. **A Rollercoaster of Emotions**: It's normal to feel a whole spectrum of emotions during the session. You might feel anger, sadness, fear, happiness, or even burst into laughter. The magic happens when you allow yourself to fully experience these emotions without holding back. **Unexpected Movements**: You might find your body moving in ways you didn't plan, like stretching, shaking, or even striking a yoga pose. Listen to what your body wants to do without overthinking it. You may feel tension build up and then release, leaving you in a state of deep relaxation. **Blissful Moments**: There's a chance you'll reach a bliss state, where you're completely in the moment, feeling a deep sense of joy and satisfaction. It's tough to put this feeling into words, but it's unforgettable once you've felt it. **DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF KAP** * **Freedom from Emotional Baggage**: Wave goodbye to those heavy emotions that drag you down. * **Broadened Consciousness**: Find yourself thinking and understanding beyond your usual limits. * **Intuition Amplified**: Your gut feelings get louder and clearer. * **Stress and Anxiety Reduction**: Watch your worries and tensions melt away. * **Boosted Confidence**: Feel more sure of yourself and your value. * **Wiser Decisions**: Navigate life with a sharper compass. * **Pure Bliss**: Experience moments of unadulterated joy. * **Stronger Boundaries**: Learn to say no with confidence. * **Shedding Limitations**: Free yourself from thoughts and patterns that hold you back. * **Breaking Old Habits**: Step out of cycles that no longer serve you. * **Increased Resilience**: Find strength to change what doesn't work in your life. * **Deeper Compassion**: Understand and connect with others on a new level. * **Clear Mind**: Enjoy the tranquility of a calm and focused brain. * **Creative and Spiritual Growth**: Explore new ideas and feel more connected to the world. * **Purpose and Direction**: Find your path and walk it with confidence. * **Healthier Relationships**: Connect with others in more meaningful ways. * **Unity and Gratitude**: Feel part of something bigger and appreciate the small things. * **Enhanced Intuitive Skills**: Tap into your inner psychic. * **Empowerment**: Take control of your life and happiness. ***Got questions?*** Connect with me on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/traceyamoura) or shoot an email to [kapbytracey@gmail.com](kapbytracey@gmail.com). Practical Philosophy Meetup - Port Credit 🇨🇦
Practical Philosophy Meetup - Port Credit 🇨🇦
✨** We started in Practical Philosophy back in 2021 and there are now 50+ chapters in over 25 countries, including Canada, Spain, Japan, Mexico and many more!

Tango & Milonga: Practice and Social in Dublin
We practice, dance, and enjoy a BYOB bottle of your favorite wine at the Dublin Ballroom off Sawmill, North, and “milonga” is a social event for tango dancing where dancers socialize. A “*practica*” is an informal social event for tango dancing where dancers focus on practicing the dance; while a “*practilonga*” combines the relaxed atmosphere of a “*practica*” with the format of a “milonga.” We are doing it all! ***Cost is $10 payable to the Teacher.*** *Cost is for the cost of the venue and covers some snacks.* We have had fun doing this event in the past. Please arrive promptly as lessons begin at 2pm. Don't worry about bringing a partner as there will be others at the event from outside the group that: a) might have a clue and b) won't step on your toes. The event is BYOB (similar to our Salsa events), so bring your favorite and a wine glass. We will likely find a place for dinner and drinks after the dance.

Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. **SCHEDULE:** 6:45ish - Quick introductions 7:00 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour 8:00 - The End **OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING** happens before and after the writing hour. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. **BEING LATE IS OKAY:** just show up and get settled! If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer. Happy writing & I look forward to seeing you at Streetlight Guild! **WHAT SHOULD I BRING?** Whatever you need to be able to write! You're welcome to bring earplugs/headphones if noise will bother you! **OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS:** * **RSVP:** Please RSVP by 6:00pm the evening of the meeting. This helps me know how many to expect, and if we'll need additional space! * **COVID:** While masks are not required, please be mindful of the other writers around you and their comfort levels. * **WIFI/OUTLETS:** Outlets are limited, so please ensure your devices are charged when you come! But Streetlight Guild does have free WiFi! Yay! * **PARKING:** There is free public parking at Streetlight Guild.
