Join us for five thrilling Monday evenings (7–9 pm) where we’ll bravely tackle some issues relating to weather, navigation, seamanship, rules of the road, chart work, safety at sea, and more. Born and raised in Siberia, in the heart of the world's largest landmass, about 2000 km from the nearest ocean, she dreamed of sailing ever since she learned that countries have laws and oceans are not countries. Drawn to what felt like the last wild and lawless frontier, she started sailing three years ago. After covering several thousand miles at sea, she has learned that water demands more constraint, discipline and respect for rules than land ever did. This is her first experimental attempt at sharing some of those rules.

Depending on what people bring, we may play brainy games, not limited to chess and classic games. So, feel free to bring other ones. And this is only indicative. Some games like Decrypto fit both events, **and if people feel like playing a social game on Monday or a more strategic one on Thursday, they are free to do so.** WHERE. **Cinema Flagey : Hair, paper, water…** 09/05 @ 17h10 “Hair, Paper, Water… is loosely structured and akin to a series of snapshots of Thị Hậu’s daily life. This is enhanced by the use of an old Bolex 16mm camera, which the directors found by chance, and which gives the film the impression of a series of home videos. The grainy texture perfectly fits with the lush green surroundings of the jungle and the oft-pouring rain that gives the film a calming rhythm. There are some waypoints in the film, often punctuated by another word or set of words spoken and repeated: flood season, the acacia harvest, market visits. Highlights are the more personal stories, such as Thị Hậu remembering how she sold her hair several times to generate some income, or talking about a dream in which her mother told her to go back to the cave. As Hair, Paper, Water… gently floats from moment to moment (water plays a big role in the lives of the Rục and the film), a certain sadness hangs over the film; everything we watch may, and probably will, vanish. Given that this is a film of moments and memory, it doesn’t work its way to some sort of hopeful crescendo, which leaves the viewer with the feeling that in the not-too-distant future all traces of the Rục will be gone. One can hope that his grandmother’s teachings stay with the young boy, but given the fate of his parents, this seems an idle hope. We are living in an age of ever increasing intelligence and power. Individual humans haven’t really become any smarter or more powerful, but together we’ve developed systems that increase the control we exert over our environment. If we look at a country like China for example, the last 50 years have seen an undeniable and unprecedented increase in living standards, which correlates with [an increase in happiness and life satisfaction](https://ourworldindata.org/happiness-and-life-satisfaction). Another way to look at this is that we’re constantly finding ways to overcome the limitations imposed on us by life/existence/the universe. Hungry? Just go to the supermarket! Had a bad fall? Here is surgery and some painkillers! Cold? Open your tap and warm water flows out like magic! What if we follow this process to its conclusion? What does a world without struggle, problems or limitations look like? What would the absence of limitations do to our behavior, our values and our ethics? Would we still be human or does something get lost along the way? Is our current intelligence explosion missing a balancing wisdom explosion? We’ll be approaching these topics by thinking creatively about the following concrete questions among others: \- If we had a vaccine against lung cancer\, why shouldn’t we smoke? \- If we could suck all of the CO2 out of the air\, why shouldn’t we continue using fossil fuels? \- If antidepressants had no side effects\, why shouldn’t we all take them to deal with grief? \- If we could breed animals \(human or nonhuman\) without pain receptors\, why shouldn’t we eat them? \- If all human activity could be automated\, why shouldn’t we become “WALL\-E people”?

From the swashbuckling adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow to the real-world exploits of Blackbeard, piracy has often been romanticized as a life unshackled from authority, where individuals carve their own destiny beyond the reach of states and laws. Beneath the mythology, however, lies a deeper philosophical question: what does it mean to live freely, and at what cost does that freedom come? Yet piracy is far from a relic of the past. In today’s world, the term stretches far beyond the high seas, reaching into the digital realm, where so-called “internet pirates” challenge the boundaries of ownership, access, and intellectual property. From peer-to-peer file sharing to the rise and fall of platforms like The Pirate Bay, the debate has evolved into a question of whether information should be free or protected. At the same time, accusations of “piracy” still surface in geopolitical conflicts, where the line between enforcement and overreach becomes increasingly blurred. Recent actions involving the seizure of vessels, particularly by powerful states like the United States, have reignited debates about legality, sovereignty, and moral authority on the high seas. We have a great little community of Movie Group friends so rather than see a movie this time, we’ll help “create a better world” by helping serve those in need. Here are complete details and our plan for this event: FAITH MISSION – GRANT KITCHEN: The Faith Mission kitchen and dining room serves residents 3 meals a day, every day of the year. For this event, our group will help prepare food, serve meals, assist residents in the dining room, wash dishes, and clean surfaces. PLAN: We will be preparing / serving / cleaning for BRUNCH from 10:30am to 12:30pm and have space for a total of 7 volunteers. Please arrive at 10:20am and wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. LOCATION: Faith Mission – Grant Kitchen is located at 245 N. Grant Ave. Enter the kitchen at Dock 1 (in the back of the building), indicated in the attached map.
