The Great World of the title refers to the setting of "The Great World", a fairground in occupied Singapore serving as a Japanese prison camp, where the protagonists meet. It also refers to the mind "the same shape as the world, and really was the world, only on an infinitely small scale", as one character observes. The two main characters' relationship is central as the men feel out their stance to each other. The New Yorker calls it "a rare serious novel... (with) an elliptical sense of time... render(ing) it poetic." Since starting this book club a few years ago we have formed a nice core membership. If you haven't come yet, please look out for the books on the table, pull up a chair, order a wine and join us. Homer composed “The Odyssey” roughly around 750–650 BCE (the exact date has been lost to the ages). The first English translation appeared in 1615 (by George Chapman). There have been over 60 English translations since George’s - and all but one by men. Emily Wilson, a professor of classics at the University of Pennsylvania, has studied Homer in depth, and found that existing translations glossed over some of the language and context expressed by Homer in order to appease masculine societal sensibilities. In her own translation, Emily refuses to sugarcoat Homer’s precise wording - and comes in like a phraseology wrecking ball! The Alliance is part of the Greater Central Ohio Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
