Rock The Casbah | Journey Across Morocco
Sitting **at the crossroads of Africa, Europe and the Middle East, Morocco** is a country of contrasts, from its quickly shifting landscapes to its dizzying **blend of Arab, Berber and French influences**. Here, the scenery and atmosphere change constantly, from Atlantic coastline to arid desert and high mountain passes, and from crowded markets to tranquil villages. While modern Morocco is dynamic and forward-looking, traces of a more romanticised past linger, in the slow rhythm of desert caravans, the scent of spice markets and the enduring image of camel traders crossing rolling dunes.
Our journey starts in **Casablanca, Morocco’s modern commercial hub**, home to landmarks like the impressive Hassan II Mosque, perched on the edge of Atlantic ocean. We’ll get a feel for the city by taking to the streets, exploring the Old Medina, stopping by Rick's Café for a dose of cinematic history, and wandering along the Ain Diab Corniche. A **traditional hammam experience** will give us our first taste of Moroccan rituals and hospitality.
Next up is **Marrakech**, where life is turned up a notch and chaos is part of the experience! The medina is a maze of colour, sound and movement, with souks dedicated to everything from spices and dates to carpets. Those looking to shop will soon find that **haggling is an art form here**. We’ll escape the madness by taking a break in the peaceful gardens of the Jardin Majorelle, and watch over the famed Jemaa el-Fnaa square as it fills with families and friends out for an evening stroll.
Leaving the city behind, the wild **Atlas Mountains** will welcome us with fresh air and endless vistas. Full of unique wildlife and primarily inhabited by Berber people, this 2,500 km range separates the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts from the Sahara Desert. Following trails winding past olive groves, and likely encountering Barbary macaques along the way, we’ll find ourselves at the spectacular **Ouzoud Waterfalls, the highest in the country at 110 meters**.
Continuing deeper into southern Morocco, we will **cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass**. This is one of the most scenic drives in the country, with winding roads, mountain villages and wide open views at every turn. Now for something unexpected: a stop in **Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Morocco”**. Here we’ll find the famous Atlas Studios, where everything from *Gladiator* to *Game of Thrones* has been filmed, along with nearby oases that feel worlds away from modern life.
Our final stop is the Aladdin-style fever dream that is **Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO-listed ksar (fortified village)** that looks almost too perfectly preserved to be real. Set along the former caravan route linking Marrakesh with the Sahara, the town is a gorgeous example of traditional Moroccan earthen clay architecture. We’ll explore its narrow alleys and take in the sweeping views, before heading out into the surrounding landscapes for a more **hands-on desert experience.** ATV or camel? You choose!
**Let’s go!**
**Day 1 – Arrival in Casablanca**
We’ll land early in the afternoon, drop our bags at our riad (local boutique hotel) near the Corniche.
Our walking tour begins with the city’s highlight, Hassan II Mosque, one of the world’s largest. Built partially over the Atlantic, this impressive building features beautiful marble floors and cedar ceilings. Next, we’ll explore the Old Medina of Casablanca, with stops at Rick’s Café and Sacré-Cœur Cathedral. Then to relax before dinner, we’ll indulge in a traditional Moroccan hammam experience, coming out squeaky clean and with skin like a baby!
Tonight we’ll have our first taste of delicious Moroccan cuisine, followed by a nighttime stroll along the Ain Diab Corniche.
Overnight in Casablanca.
**Day 2 – Marrakech**
This morning we’ll hit the road to Marrakech, once a hippie mecca in the 1960s and 70s. We will hang out at Jardin Majorelle (yes - the one created by Yves Saint Laurent), the Ben Youssef Madrasa, Bahia Palace, and Le Jardin Secret.
After some lunch, we’ll head to the medina for some extreme shopping and haggling, exploring the spice souk, leather souk, metal lantern market, and carpet souk.
We’ll wind down the day with sunset views from a rooftop overlooking the city’s iconic Jemaa el-Fnaa square, followed by dinner.
Overnight in Marrakech.
***Optional:***
*Sunset hot air balloon experience over Marrakech (additional cost)*
**Day 3 – Atlas Mountains & Ouzoud Waterfalls**
This morning we set out into the Atlas Mountains, hiking a trail to the towering Ouzoud waterfalls and taking selfies with macaques along the way. After a boat ride under the waterfall, we’ll continue our hike downstream through olive groves trail and plantations. We’ll have a well-deserved lunch overlooking the cascades.
Tonight we live like kings, in a 5-star hotel castle with waterfall views!
**Day 4 – Atlas Crossing to Ouarzazate**
Today we make the drive through the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, stopping along the way to admire the stunning views and visit local landmarks Kasbah Telouet, a beautiful but partially ruined 19th-century palace that has been abandoned since the 1950s. We’ll enjoy a traditional lunch in a mountain village.
Once in Ouarzazate, we’ll visit the famous Atlas Studios – where movies and series such as *Gladiator, The Mummy, Game of Thrones,* and *Jinn* were filmed – and the nearby Fint Oasis.
Overnight in Ouarzazate.
**Day 5 – Aït Benhaddou & Desert Adventure**
This morning, we don’t need coffee to wake up! It’s time to ramp up the excitement with an ATV tour across the desert plateau. There’s also an option to make like a true desert explorer with a camel ride, followed by tea with a Berber family.
Next we make the short drive to magical Aït Benhaddou, wandering its alleys, climbing to the hilltop granary, learning about the old caravan route, and exploring its notable film locations. We’ll linger here for sunset, taking advantage of the golden light in one of Morocco’s best photography locations.
Overnight in Aït Benhaddou’s Kasbah, feeling like we’ve travelled back in time!
**Day 6 – Return to Casablanca & Departure**
Today we hit the road early to make our way back to Casablanca for our afternoon flight home.
**Level of difficulty:** Easy and relaxing
**Activities:** trekking, sightseeing, cultural immersion, ATV riding.
**Accommodation & meals:** Atmospheric local boutique riads + 5 star hotels, double sharing. Meals excluded.
**Cost: 5,490 AED** excl. flights on Emirates. **Cost valid until May 20th.**
**Excluded:** Visa if any, meals, flights.
Optional hot air balloon or camel riding.

To be or Nosy Be, that is the question! | Nosy Be Archipelago, Madagascar
**Welcome to Paradise!**
**Nosy Be, meaning "big island" in the Malagasy language**, is a beachy paradise located 8 km off the northwestern coast of Madagascar. **It's in fact a volcanic archipelago with a** **warm tropical climate, pristine white-sand beaches, eleven crater lakes,** and habitats which are home to numerous endemic plant and animal species.
At 320 square kilometers, Nosy Be is the **largest island of an archipelago**, and its several smaller neighbors nearby make it the ideal place for island hopping and sampling an array of picture-postcard beaches. One of the main attractions of the archipelago is its marine life, and waters surrounding many of the islets are **excellent spots for scuba diving and snorkelling**.
The French colonized Nosy Be from 1840, founding an outpost named **Hell-Ville** which became an important trade harbor in the Mozambique Channel. Now the capital, the city offers French colonial buildings and a glimpse of day-to-day local life at its lively markets and craft centers.
In the southeast of Nosy Be is its most famous attraction: **Lokobe National Park,** a 740-hectare sanctuary known for its rare panther chameleon population, black lemurs, geckos, frogs and much more. One of Madagascar's five Strict Nature Reserves, Lokobe encompasses **an old-growth forest with ancient endemic tree species** – the last remaining primary rainforest on the island. A wildlife-spotting trek through this lush coastal haven brimming with ylang-ylang, orchids, palm trees and ferns is an experience to remember.
**Ready to explore the islands of your dreams? Let’s go!**
**DAY 1 // ARRIVAL IN NOSY BE**
Meet at DXB at 2am for a flight via Addis. Arrival, immigration procedure and one-hour drive to our beach-side hotel, where we’ll be based for the duration of the trip. We’ll settle in, indulge in the beautiful surroundings and head for a sunset to Sakatia.
**Sunset at Sakatia**
A short boat ride off the west coast of Nosy Be is Nosy Sakatia, a road-free island with picture-perfect beaches, rare birds and endemic flora. What it’s most known for, however, is its coral reef teeming with ocean life. With its marine ecosystem located inside a protected area, the island’s waters offer an unforgettable snorkelling or diving experience.
**DAY 2 // HELL-VILLE & MONT PASSOT**
We’ll enjoy a relaxing morning, with a trip to the local crafts market for those who are interested in purchasing a souvenir. After lunch at the seaside, we’ll drive about an hour to reach the highest viewpoint in Nosy Be – the dormant volcano Mount Passot. From more than 300m up, we’ll have a magnificent panoramic view of Nosy Be’s volcanic lakes, the surrounding islands, and the sparkling, multi-hued coastal waters.
We’ll settle in and enjoy a beautiful sunset before heading back to the hotel.
**DAY 3 // LOKOBE NATIONAL PARK**
Early departure this morning as we embark on our first adventure, in Lokobe National Park. We’ll hit the road towards the southeast of the island, passing by the capital of Hell-Ville. After about an hour we’ll reach the village of Ambatozavavy, where we’ll pile into local fishing boats and make our way through dense mangrove forests to reach the park.
Our 2-3 hour, ranger-led hike will take us through dense forest and lush greenery, where we’ll keep our eyes peeled to spot endemic wildlife and plants, including lemurs and rare chameleons.
When we’ve had our fill of exploring, we’ll head back to our lodgings, stopping for lunch along the way. Afternoon at leisure for swimming and relaxing on the beach.
**DAY 4 // NOSY ANTSOHA & NOSY IRANJA**
Today we have another magical island excursion, taking in two of Nosy Be’s neighbors. First we’ll make a stop at tiny Nosy Antsoha, where a nature walk will bring us face-to-face with the three different species of lemurs which call the island home.
We’ll continue on to Nosy Iranja, connected to Nosy Be by a sandbank that is covered during high tide and revealed during low tide. Its shores and shallow waters provide a habitat for sea turtles, hence its nickname of “Turtle Island”. In this beautiful, white sand paradise, the inviting waters appear in every shade of blue. We’ll tuck into a picnic lunch on a dreamy beach and enjoy our little piece of heaven. Return to our lodgings in the afternoon and evening at leisure.
**DAY 5 // DEPARTURE**
Morning time at leisure until we say goodbye to paradise and transfer back to the airport for our flight home.
**Grade:** easy and relaxing tropical holidays.
**Activities:** island hopping, trekking, sightseeing, beach strolling, boating. Optional diving.
**Accommodation:** Beach side hotel and spa, shared rooms. Single room at extra cost, subject of availability at the time of booking.
**Meals:** Lunches and dinners excluded.
**Cost: 5,500 AED excl. flights.** Cost valid until **MAY 20th**. Past this date cost will change if we still have availability.

Tiger Nest & Dragon Hearts feat. Punakha | Thimpu + Paro, Bhutan
Famous for its unique culture and stunning landscapes, **Bhutan**, the legendary **Kingdom of the Himalayas**, is a country unlike any other. Often called **the last Shangri-La**, this is a place where time runs slower, and the government operates by the unique philosophy of **Gross National Happiness**.
Many factors contribute to the famed **happiness and contentment** of Bhutan’s population, from the country’s pride in **preserving its traditions**, languages, and customs to the **prioritization of wellbeing** over material wealth. In this land of dense forests and towering mountains, incredible vistas are all around, and a **connection to nature** is deeply ingrained in the culture. In addition, the practice of **Mahayana Buddhism** profoundly influences the Bhutanese way of life, emphasizing inner peace, compassion, and community harmony.
With **stupas and monasteries** on every corner, spirituality is embedded in daily life here. Centuries of religious devotion have led to the creation of incredible landmarks and sacred spaces, including the country’s iconic crown jewel: Taktsang monastery, or **the** **Tiger’s Nest**. One of the most venerated places of pilgrimage in the Himalayas, the monastery appears like something out of a fairy tale, clinging to the rock a towering 800m (2,600ft) above the valley floor.
Nowhere in the Himalayas is the natural environment richer and more diverse than it is in Bhutan, home to high, rugged mountains and deep valleys which have been recognized as one of the world’s ten most important **biodiversity hotspots**. One of Bhutan’s ancient names was Menjong Yul, meaning **‘the land of medicinal herbs’**, and the people’s respect for the natural environment means that even today it remains pristine and mostly undisturbed.
Here we’ll discover ancient spiritual practices, trek into untouched landscapes and feel the awe of nature’s majesty in this hidden corner of the world.

**Let’s go!**
**DAY 1 :: MAY 26**
Recommended departure to Kathmandu at 02:10-08:05.
Connecting flight to Bhutan at 13:00.
On sunny days, the inbound flight to Bhutan is marked by **panoramic views of the Himalayas, including the towering Everest**. The approach through the tiny airstrip of Paro has been termed as “adventurous”, to say the least!
Arrival in the afternoon, after which we’ll check in to the hotel in Thimpu and have our first experience with fiery **Bhutanese cuisine**.
Later we’ll visit Thimphu’s Memorial Stupa, also known as the **Thimphu Chorten**, a prominent religious landmark in the city with its golden spires and bells. Afterwards we’ll take a short 3-4km hike to Kuensel Phodrang, reaching the **gigantic Buddha Dordenma** at the top of the hill. The **50-meter-high, gilt gold** **statue** fulfils an ancient prophecy dating back to the 8th century A.D. and is said to emanate an aura of peace and happiness to the entire world.
Overnight in Thimpu.
**DAY 2 :: MAY 27**
Today we drive via Dochu-La Pass to Punakha and hike to iconic **Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility),** located on a round hillock on the edge of Punakha Valley.
After lunch our exploration continues with a visit to the majestic **Punakha Dzong fortress**, a stunning example of traditional Bhutanese architecture which serves as a winter residence for the Dratshang Lhentshog, the commission for the monastic affairs of Bhutan. Built in 1637, it is picturesquely located in between two rivers – the **Pho Chhu (Male River) & Mo Chhu (Female River)** – and houses sacred Buddhist relics.
We’ll then take a walk along the **Punakha suspension bridge**, Bhutan’s longest, stretching 180 m (590 ft) across the water of the Pho Chhu, before checking into the hotel and resting up for the evening.
**DAY 3 :: MAY 28**
Today after breakfast and formalities we’ll drive to the **Dochula Pass (3,100m)** and begin the hike to the 18th century **Lungchutse Lhakhang temple (3,565m)**. This uber picturesque route passes through primary forests of rhododendrons, magnolias, birches, and bamboos, and occasionally meadows being used as yak pastures.
When we reach the temple we’ll be richly rewarded by views over the **entire span of Bhutan’s Himalayan range** and its majestic, snow covered peaks. We will then make our way downhill for about an hour until we reach Dochula Pass, encountering several landmarks and stupas along the path.
In the afternoon we will have an opportunity to witness **rural life in Bhutanese village,** and those who would like to can experience a **traditional** **hot stone bath**. For even richer immersion, there is also the option to spend the night in the village.
**DAY 4 :: MAY 29**
After breakfast we’ll start our last hike, to the sacred **Taktsang Monastery**, known as **the Tiger’s Nest,** situated at an altitude of 3100m in the Upper Paro Valley. During the hike we’ll keep our strength up with a picnic lunch in the woods with spectacular views.
Our ancient destination is the abode of gods and monks, a place of great spiritualty since the 8th century. As per the legend of Taktsang, this was the site of a cave in the sheer cliff face used by mystic Guru Rinpoche for meditation. He assumed a wrathful form, Guru Dorji Drolo, riding a flying tigress to subdue the evil spirits in the area. After many centuries, a religious complex took shape here, clinging to the rock face, with the oldest temple built by a Nyingma Buddhist master around 1508.

Lakescapes | Eid Journey through Kyrgyzstan & Kazakhstan
This Eid, we’re offering **the combo trip of your dreams** with this journey across two of Central Asia’s most beautiful and intriguing countries.
**Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan** each offer many incredible sights, but **the** **loudest “wows” are usually heard by their pristine, high-altitude lakes,** ranging from deep blue to green to electric turquoise. So we’ve cooked up a trip which takes in the most stunning bodies of water in the region, sure to take your breath away – especially if you decide to take a dip!
**Mysterious, mountainous Kyrgyzstan** awes visitors with its idyllic backdrops of green pastures, **alpine lakes and glaciers**, surrounded by dense forest and jagged mountain peaks. Exploring these untouched landscapes on foot and by horseback, traversing hills and valleys where nomads roam, it’s possible to witness a **traditional Kyrgyz way of life which continues as it has for centuries**.
**Scenic vistas abound in the magnificent Tchu Valley**, in the northern part of the famed Tien Shan Mountains, a massive mountain range that runs throughout the ‘stans’ and all the way to China. This beautiful, forested river valley stretches more than 100 km from east to west, and is **home to an array of wildlife** such as alpine ibex, ermines, snow leopards, deer, golden eagles, saker falcons, and bearded vultures.
Enjoying the pure air and clear, starry skies, our adventure will take us to verdant ***jailoos*, high-altitude summer pastures** that Kyrgyz nomads take their flocks to for grazing in the warmer months. Staying with friendly locals, we’ll learn about the nomadic way of life and spend our nights in cozy yurts.
**Kazakhstan, the world’s ninth largest country,** is a rugged natural wonderland of steppes, mountains, woodlands, canyons and lakes. Within its borders lies a section of the Tien Shan range, offering up the gorgeous **Alpine terrain of forests, valleys and snowy peaks** found in the Kolsay Lakes National Park.
In this magical landscape shaped by time and tectonics, more than 100 years ago, **a great earthquake** shook these mountains, resulting in the formation of a new body of water: **Lake Kaindy, with its eye catching,** **bright turquoise waters**. What makes this lake really stand out are the **partially submerged spruce trees** which stand in its waters to this day. Ghostly, bare trunks rise out of the chilly waters, making for a striking panorama – and amazing pictures!
Nearby are the **Kolsay Lakes, known as the "Pearls of Tien Shan"**, reached by a hike through dense, tranquil forest. Trails connect these stunning bodies of water which range from altitudes of 1800 to 2850 meters, making for a great excuse to stretch our legs.
We’ll descend from green heights to dusty depths as we trek into the gorge known as Kazakhstan’s **Grand Canyon**. Known for its stunning similarity to its bigger brother in States, **Charyn Canyon National Park’s** red sandstone rock formations are a stark contrast to the country’s mountainous regions. The **second largest canyon in the world**, Charyn Canyon stretches about 154 km (96 mi) along the banks of the Charyn River. Over millennia, the elements have weathered and shaped the sedimentary rock into **pillars, winding corridors and crevices** just begging to be explored.

Franklin Park Conservatory / Columbus Brewing Company
**History**
The [Franklin Park Conservatory](https://www.fpconservatory.org/)’s roots trace back to 1852 when the Franklin County Agricultural Society purchased 88 acres of land to host the Ohio State Fair. After the fair moved to its permanent home, the city of Columbus transformed the grounds into Franklin Park in 1884. This transition shifted the space from a temporary event site to a dedicated public green space for the growing community. The park became a central hub for outdoor recreation and early civic gatherings in the neighborhood.
In 1895, the landmark Victorian-style Palm House opened its doors, drawing heavy inspiration from the Glass Palace of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This iron and glass structure became an immediate icon, housing exotic plants that residents would otherwise never see in the Midwest. It remains the oldest part of the facility and serves as a primary link to the conservatory’s 19th-century origins. For decades, it stood as a singular testament to grand horticultural architecture in Central Ohio.
A major turning point arrived in 1992 when Columbus hosted AmeriFlora '92, an international horticultural exhibition. This massive event prompted a $16 million renovation and expansion, adding significantly more greenhouse space and the Dorothy M. Davis Showhouse. The festival put the conservatory on the international map and fundamentally changed its scale and ambition. Following the event, the facility transitioned from a city-run park to a private, non-profit organization.
In 2003, the conservatory’s identity was further defined through a long-term partnership with world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. After a successful exhibition, the Friends of the Conservatory purchased most of the glass installations, creating the largest permanent collection of Chihuly’s work in a botanical setting. These vibrant glass sculptures are now woven throughout the biomes, blending art with nature. This addition helped cement the conservatory as a premier cultural destination rather than just a botanical garden.
Recent years have seen the site expand beyond the glass walls to emphasize community engagement and outdoor education. The 2018 opening of the Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Children’s Garden added two acres of interactive landscape designed for hands-on learning. The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company Community Garden Campus also provides local residents with space to grow their own food and learn sustainable practices. Today, the conservatory balances its historic Victorian charm with modern commitments to local ecology and the Columbus community.
**Maps of the Conservatory**
Here is the [main map](https://www.fpconservatory.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/franklin-park-zones-scaled.jpg) of the Conservatory grounds. Here's a [map of the areas](https://www.fpconservatory.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/ConstructionMap-2026.jpg) in which the Conservatory has ongoing construction (see below).
**Summary**
For this event, we'll explore Columbus's highly-rated and very popular Conservatory. As mentioned above, the Conservatory is doing renovations on parts of the facility. These renovations are scheduled to be ongoing until the Fall of next year.
Basically, no matter when you go to the Conservatory over the next 18 months, you're going to see some metaphorical orange barrels. So let's just go now.
**Tickets and pricing**
On the first Sunday of every month, the Conservatory is free for residents of Franklin County and the city of Columbus. You must bring an ID to receive this discount. (Yes, they do check.) Otherwise, tickets are $25.20.
Members of the Columbus Zoo (of which I am one) do get a discount on tickets, though I have never actually bought a ticket to the Conservatory (I've always gone on free days). I believe the discount is $4.
Parking is always free.
If you have additional questions about pricing or whether and for what you qualify, you can reach the Conservatory at 614-715-8000.
**Where we'll meet**
We will meet just outside the main entrance. I guarantee there's going to be a line. The Conservatory is always popular on free days, and especially in nice weather.
**Your GPS is stupid!**
Be careful simply typing "Franklin Park Conservatory" in your GPS and going where it tells you.
The only way to access the parking lot to the Conservatory is off of Broad Street. Unfortunately, since Google Maps is unable to find its way out of a wet paper bag, it has a tendency to want to take people to a mythical, non-existent Conservatory entrance on Nelson Road.
If your GPS does this, just drive to the north side of the Conservatory along Broad Street. Your GPS should then redirect you to the main Conservatory entrance. If your GPS doesn't, then throw your phone away\* and look for the big Conservatory sign on the south side of Broad Street between Nelson Road and Franklin Park West.
You also should be able to use the map pin I've provided, below, and it should properly direct you to where you need to drive.
\* Don't really do this.
**After the event**
After stopping to smell the roses, for those that are interested, we'll head to the nearby [Columbus Brewing Company Beer Hall](https://columbusbrewing.com/location/beer-hall/) for [drinks](https://columbusbrewing.com/location/beer-hall/#draft-list) and [lunch](https://columbusbrewing.com/location/beer-hall/#food-menu).
The Beer Hall's actual address is [200 Kelton Ave, Columbus, OH 43205](https://www.google.com/maps/place/200+Kelton+Ave,+Columbus,+OH+43205/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x883889a94ac4acad:0xadb2e60240dbc38b?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111) (it's literally just on the south side of the Conservatory). Be sure this is where your GPS is taking you when you use it, as the Brewing Company has a taproom on Harrison Avenue that is *not* what you want for this event.
We should be at the Beer Hall by 1 if you can't make the Conservatory and just want to join us for drinks.
I'd like to buy a vowel!! 📺 🤩 💵 🥳 🇺🇸 😄
**Summary**
We will play TV-style game shows at [Game Show Battle Rooms](https://gameshowbattlerooms.com/columbus/) ("GSBR"). These will include *Family Feud*, *Wheel of Fortune*, and *The Price is Right*, and we will play them over the course of an hour.
We ran this event for the second time back in October, and it was an even bigger hit than it was the first time we ran it the February prior. GSBR has nearly 10,000 reviews on Google and a 5-star rating. If there were any event where you were just about guaranteed to have a good time, it's this one.
GSBR changes their questions and answers every month, so if you attended in October (or even if you went with another group as recently as April), you will not see any of the same questions you saw before.
**The Date and Time of This Event**
Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. However, if someone books the 3:00 p.m. time before I do (meaning before I have enough paid attendees), well, that's the way the cookie crumbles and we'll have to move to Plan B.
That might involve trying for either one of GSBR's 1:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. slots, or just cancelling the Meetup altogether. We'll cross that bridge if we get to it, but be aware of these possibilities.
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to whatever our actual showtime ends up being. (Hence, this meetup's 2:45 p.m. start time.)
**Cost**
The cost to play, per person, is $36.95 plus 8% sales tax of $2.96, plus a refundable 8% gratuity of $2.96 (see the next section for more details), for a total cost of $42.86 per person.
**Mandatory Gratuity (If 20+ Participants)**
If we have 20 or more participants in this event, GSBR will assess a mandatory gratuity of 8%, or $2.96 per person. If we have 20 or more attendees, GSBR will give our group an extra 15 minutes of playing time.
I am collecting the gratuity up-front to prepare for the case in which we have at least 20 people. However, in the event that we do not, I will refund this $2.96 to you.
In the event we have fewer than 20 people and your gratuity is refunded, your cost for the event will end up being $39.91 (instead of $42.86).
I will say more below on the actual exchange of money for this event.
**Drinks**
GSBR does allow beverages into the game room, and they also sell some on-site. These include bottled water, soft drinks, and some alcoholic beverages. You can bring your own bottled water, too, if you want.
**Cancellations and Refunds**
Per GSBR's [website](https://gameshowbattlerooms.com/questions/): *If you cancel your show 5 or more days in advance of your booking time, you will receive a full refund.*
*You may reduce the number of tickets and receive a refund if you provide at least 5-days’ notice.*
More on this in a moment.
**Number of Participants**
GSBR does not run events for fewer than 6 people. I will not purchase tickets for this event with fewer than 10 paid, and I will not send out a solicitation for money without at least 12 signed up for this Meetup.
More on this below.
**The Actual Exchange of Money**
Tickets for GSBR events are not purchased piecemeal. I will need to book our GSBR event as a bloc. This means that everyone will need to send me his or her entrance fee via either Venmo or Paypal prior to me booking our time. Anyone failing to send me his or her money will be removed by me from this event.
Once 12+ people are signed up here for this Meetup, I will send out a DM through the Meetup messaging system to those 12+ participants with my Venmo/Paypal information. You will then have 72 hours to wire me your share of the money. After 72 hours, if I don't have money from you, I'll remove you from event.
If I don't have money from at least 10 people, I'll refund everyone's money, and we'll either re-start the process or I'll just cancel the event. I'm not going to book any event with GSBR unless I'm reasonably certain we're going to be able to run it.
Assuming I have money from 10+ people, then I will book the event through GSBR's website.
If you decide to cancel and you want a refund, you ***must*** give me time to contact GSBR with at least 5 days notice. Since the date of this event is Saturday, June 27, you have to let me know not later than Sunday, June 21, to allow me time to call GSBR not later than Monday, June 22, in order to get a refund for your share.
Once I have confirmation from GSBR for the refund, I will Venmo/Paypal the money back to you immediately from my account. (There will probably be a 3-5 day delay before GSBR actually processes the refund, but I will absorb the cost of the float and get your money back to you right away.)
**"Hey, Eric! I just saw this event! Can I sign up late?"**
Yes, but you still need to Venmo/Paypal your share of the booking fee to me, which will be $40.55. If I don't get it within 72 hours after you sign up (or time permitting for me to book you in with GSBR if you sign up last-minute), then I'll remove you from the event.
**Mandatory GSBR Waiver Requirement**
GSBR policies *require* that each attendee signs a liability waiver prior to the event. You can find the waiver [here](https://gameshowbattlerooms.com/questions/) (on the right-hand side toward the bottom of the page under the section "Do I Need To Sign A Waiver Form?"), and you should also be able to skip directly to the form [here](https://waiver.smartwaiver.com/w/5c473bb934d6a/web/).
*You must fill out this waver in order to participate in the event*. The form is short and this really shouldn't take you more than 2 minutes, but please send me a DM if you have any issues filling out the document.
**Denouement**
Afterward, for those who are interested, we'll drown our sorrows or celebrate our exultations at [Crooked Can Brewing](https://crookedcanohio.com/) in Hilliard. They also have extensive food options. The actual address of the brewery is [5354 Center St, 43026](https://www.google.com/maps/place/5354+Center+St,+Hilliard,+OH+43026/@40.0339813,-83.1623519,17.25z/data=!4m6!3m5!1s0x883893f9f30108a7:0xbe4c8919aa69e3e7!8m2!3d40.0344541!4d-83.1598828!16s%2Fg%2F11gxsh9f_0?entry=ttu).
Columbus Code & Coffee 87 @ Improving
Columbus Code & Coffee is an inclusive, informal co-working session. People of all skill levels attend, and we love it that way. Many people (optionally) bring projects to work on, and many other people (optionally) socialize the entire time. It's entirely up to you!
**What to Expect at the Intro Circle**
\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~\~
Near the beginning of the event (1:30 pm), we do a standup:
* Organizer announcements, updates, and logistics
Round 1 - (7 secs max):
* Your name
* What you're working on
* What you can help others with
Round 2:
* Community events you wanna plug. If none, that's cool too.
Round 3:
* Job opportunities you're hiring for OR announce that you are looking for one. If none, that's cool.
After the introduction circle, everything is self-organized! Feel free to work alone, pair up, attend one of our workshops/presentations, or mingle!
Karaoke + Freestyle (bring wine)
**Karaoke Night**: Bring your glee club friends. Enjoy a flashback to your choir days. No chorus line. It's all you baby. Sing. Shout. Scream. Lip sync if you need to. But do show up and do have a good time.
**On Freestyle night** \- just bring a bottle to share\. There is NO formal wine tasting like on other weeks\. Door charge is $10 \(cash or Venmo only please\)\. We may have some left over wines to clear out\! Glasses are provided\. Take Care\. See you there\.
**Parking**: There are several public parking lots near the Alive614 hall. Please be careful to NOT park in private parking lots. They do tow. Check Google maps to scope out your space. Anyone who is early could easily find a parking space on the street nearby. I am told that the Chase parking lot is safe after hours.
**Glasses**: …will be provided. Please note that after the wine tasting, the EMPTY glasses need to be returned to the boxes at the service table. Please do not make me hunt down your empty glass. Please be gentle, our glasses are fragile. Uh, they are made of glass!
**Food**: You are welcome to bring a snack to share. It is not required. Most people do though. If no one brings anything, there will be nothing.
**Code of Conduct**: Though mostly understood, it’s still worth mentioning. We don’t have rules per se, but we highly discourage the following topics of discussion because they are likely to incite anti-social responses - Sex, Politics, Religion. Please don’t mistake this as an attempt to limit your free speech rights but rather a guide to a place and time for appropriate discussions.
**After the lights go out**: After the last sip of wine, when we clean up and turn the lights out, if you still haven’t had enough of us, it is typical for a group to get together and go to a local eatery for food and/or drinks or coffee.
Again, We look forward to meeting new members and reuniting with old friends.
Sincerely, ***Paul Uttermohlen***,
**Red 1 Realty**
*Your Hilliard Wine Club Host*
