Capoeira (capo-way-ra) is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that is unlike any other martial art. Capoeira incorporates flowing movements with kicks, dodges, and some acrobatics. It is often mistaken for a dance for those reasons. Since it’s origins in the 17th century, it has evolved from a secret fighting practice into an art emphasizing self-expression and community celebration. It is great for the body and mind! In addition to gaining strength and flexibility in class, students learn about Brazilian culture, history, and language (Portuguese). On November 26, 2014 capoeira was granted a special protected status as "intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO. Come and join us for a chill Wednesday evening with fellow furs at As You Are! As You Are is a relaxed queer bar/café located in south-east dc halfway between capitol hill and navy yard. It's easy to get to via metro; the Eastern Market stop(Orange/Silver/Blue lines) is one block away! Parking, as with almost everywhere in dc, is very limited, so public transit or carpooling is recommended. This is not a 21+ only event, though there is a bar with drinks and food available, as well as a game room attached to the upstairs event room. Please check out the bar and get some good eats! We’ll meet in the grass in front of the cathedral, break into small groups, and draw questions from a deck of cards designed to spark vulnerable, honest conversations. How it works: Draw a card and ask a question. Listen. Don't coach or give advice without permission. Try to ask follow-up questions when people share. You can spend 1 minute on a question or 1 hour, just go with the flow. **If you show up late, please don't interrupt the speaker.
