April 2026 - Everything Is Tuberculosis - John Green
April 2026 - Everything Is Tuberculosis - John Green
For our fourth book, we have the acclaimed bestseller which explores why the curable disease of tuberculosis is still endemic in much of the world. 'AN ACCLAIMED BEST BOOK OF 2025: NPR, Scientific American, Science News. Goodreads Readers’ Choice Nonfiction Winner. Tuberculosis has been entwined with humanity for millennia. Once romanticized as a malady of poets, today tuberculosis is seen as a disease of poverty that walks the trails of injustice and inequity we blazed for it. In 2019, author John Green met Henry Reider, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. John became fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequities that allow this curable, preventable infectious disease to also be the deadliest, killing over a million people every year. In Everything Is Tuberculosis, John tells Henry’s story, woven through with the scientific and social histories of how tuberculosis has shaped our world—and how our choices will shape the future of tuberculosis.' This book is available on Kindle. For international delivery you can find it from Blackwells and it may also be available at the library or an English language book store. We are a "real" book club, which means we do read the book before the meet-up and discuss it. New members are always welcome. We need to notify the venue about how many will attend, so please make sure your RSVP status is accurate. Hope to see you there!

Embracing Fluidity: Life Beyond Labels
Embracing Fluidity: Life Beyond Labels
*"You are under no obligation to be the same person you were five minutes ago." — Alan Watts* **What is one phase, hobby, or label you used to fit into, but have happily outgrown?** During a busy daily routine, it is easy to feel swept up in the current. The world around us naturally uses labels to help organize everyday life, and it can be genuinely comforting to find our "group" or define exactly who we are. But human beings are wonderfully complex, contradictory, and constantly evolving. This Curious Souls Cafe gathering is an invitation to explore the beauty of fluidity. We are turning our focus inward to discover a quiet sense of spaciousness within ourselves. We will discuss the quiet art of wearing a label to function in our daily lives, without letting it define our core identity. Let's share how we navigate changing our minds, outgrowing old versions of ourselves, and allowing ourselves to be a gentle "work in progress." Bring your thoughts and an open mind. Let's discover the joy of living without boxes, together. **Inviting all who are...** 🌊 Reflecting on how everyday life naturally uses categories, and seeking a quiet space to just "be" 🧠 Eager to cultivate a cozy internal space for evolving, growing, and changing their minds ⚖️ Navigating how to stay engaged in our communities while holding our personal identities lightly 📵 Interested in stepping back from digital echo chambers to savor authentic, unstructured human connection 🤝 Believing that we grow best in community, sharing insights and inspiration 📅 Agenda / What You'll Experience 💬 Prompted Conversations We will use virtual question cards designed to help people playfully explore their personal habits and internal operating systems. Here are some sample questions: * Have you ever naturally outgrown a phase, hobby, or label that used to feel like a perfect fit, and what did that shift feel like? * What is an everyday interest, taste, or opinion you used to have that has gently shifted over time? * How can we use labels as helpful tools to navigate our daily routines, without secretly letting them trap or define us? * If you didn't have to define your identity to anyone, what beautifully messy, contradictory mix of hobbies or traits would you embrace? From there, we’ll embark on a respectful, engaging, and meaningful conversation, celebrating the diversity of perspectives and ideas within the group. Note: This session may involve virtual question cards accessed via a link or QR code. If you do not have a device (phone/tablet) to access these, please ask a facilitator for assistance; we have spare units available. The exact format of the event may change depending on turnout according to [https://curioussouls.cafe/#how-to](https://curioussouls.cafe/#how-to) and other factors. 💬 Final Thoughts and Feedback Where time allows, in the final 10 minutes of the event, we’ll take a moment to reflect on the key insights, memorable moments, and takeaways from our discussions. This is a chance to distill the shared wisdom and leave with a deeper understanding of the topics we’ve explored together. After the event officially concludes, the group may choose to extend the session, depending on the group’s interest. Of course, you’re welcome to leave at any time that feels right for you. An anonymized summary will be shared for sessions where key insights are identified. After the meeting, our facilitators and participants may reflect on the discussion and contribute to a summary or collaborative workbook based on their notes and observations. Additionally, questions may be revisited in future sessions in an anonymized manner. To explore what our events are like, check out our official website at [https://curioussouls.cafe](https://curioussouls.cafe) 📍 Location City: Hong Kong Address: Empire Centre, 68 Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East Inside the shopping mall of Empire Centre, there is a large open area dedicated to a café. We will sit at a round table or sofa inside (near a Hang Seng ATM or 7-Eleven store). Please look for the big words "Curious Souls Café" on our table. If you take the MTR, the nearest station and exit will be East Tsim Sha Tsui Station (Exit P1). From there, you can walk to Empire Centre, which is just a few minutes away. Google Maps link: [maps.app.goo.gl/51Jr8qxY4q5YLQ6q7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/51Jr8qxY4q5YLQ6q7) 🈚 Free of Charge While there is no charge to attend, we kindly encourage you to support the venue by purchasing a drink and/or any items from their menu. Scrabble
Scrabble
A chilled-out Saturday afternoon playing Scrabble and/or Upwords. **The Plan** * 1400 Arrive at Eaton Hotel - go to the food court on Lower Ground floor & look for a table with a Scrabble box. * Stay and play as long as you want to! **What To Do** 1. RSVP here 2. Please ensure the organiser knows your Meetup username & the name/pronouns you usually use. If you’re new and/or don’t yet know the organiser, please DM the organiser with this information via Meetup, or join the Scrabble WhatsApp chat within the Tandem community. **Please note:** 1. Tandem is a community of volunteers; everything you see is created by our members giving up their time and labour. None of our organisers profit from events; any charges listed are those from other parties and we never add a mark-up. In this context, we need attendees to do their best to reduce the workload of our volunteer team by reading the event description and these notes carefully; and follow the instructions in order to register a place on the event. Please be considerate and helpful with our team – we are all volunteers. 2. We run all our event communication through WhatsApp. Please keep track of event related messages in the Whatsapp event group and respond to requests and instructions from organisers within 24hrs. Please don’t put the chat on mute. If our team don’t receive your response within 24hrs, we will move you to “Not Going”. 3. If you require special accessibility accommodations for the event (i.e., accessible venue, accessible restrooms, noise levels, lighting conditions, etc) and are unsure whether they can be met, please reach out to the organiser/host. 4. We encourage language inclusivity at all our events. If you aren't confident in English, please let our team know. We will try to provide bilingual support where possible and/or will try and introduce you to other language speakers you're more comfortable with. Please be mindful that we might not be able to accommodate all languages at all events, but we will do our best to make everyone feel welcome and heard. 5. If you sign up, but can no longer make it, please update your RSVP as soon as possible and tell the organiser. Updating your RSVP well ahead of the event allows us to manage the waitlist; allow other people to attend; know who to look out for at the start of the event; and manage any relevant bookings, such as table reservations. 6. If you don’t have a clear face pic on your profile and/or your username doesn’t match the name you normally use, we can’t identify your payments nor match your RSVP with who you are in real life. If this is you, please ensure the organiser knows who you are. If we can’t work out who you are within 24hrs of your RSVP, we will move you to “Not Going”. 7. Only group members and their guests with an RSVP may attend events; people who aren’t signed up will be refused entry to events. 8. If you don’t follow the conditions above, we will move you to “Not Going” for future events until you message us to confirm you will follow these conditions.
