Suzhou Creek and North Bund Walking Tour Come with me for a stroll along my favorite part of Suzhou Creek and North Bund, passing numerous historical sites and culture landmarks while enjoying some natural peace and quiet at the same time. The entire route is about 5 kilometers long and aims to lead participants in reading architecture, appreciating culture, and engaging with history and meet and greet new friends on the tour.. Suzhou Creek, the biggest tributary of the Huangpu, runs through central areas of the city and stretches from the Outer Ring to the Bund. Suzhou creek waterfront has been revitalized in recent years to provide uninterrupted walking paths, new gardens and ample resting areas. The riverbanks in Huangpu District, about 3 kilometers from Chengdu Road Bridge to Waibaidu Bridge near the Bund, has become a pedestrian-favored corridor Let us enjoy the enchanting scenery of the Suzhou Creek not only on foot, Waibaidu Bridge （Garden bridge） This is China’s first all-steel bridge and, in Shanghai style, lights up in different colors in the evening. This steel bridge from 1907 is one of a few unequal height truss bridge in China. It played a part in numerous books and movies With its rich history and unique design, it is a symbol of ShanghaiSimply enjoy the walk on the wooden deck of this old bridge Suzhou Creek holds a special place in the hearts of Shanghai residents. The region's silks and ceramics were carried along the Maritime Silk Road in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), and centuries later the area became an early industrial hub of the city. Since Shanghai was forced to open its port in 1843, the creek has been the backdrop for dramatic landmarks in the city's history. It was the scene of wartime suffering and the birthplace of China's earliest national industries. North Bund offers innovation, history, stunning skyline views Shanghai’s riverside areas have already been transformed with greenery and walking paths, shikumen residences are being renovated, and the historic North Bund is becoming the city’s “most beautiful parlor.” Let's have a walk along North Bund, a gem with stunning views of the Lujiazui skyline, plenty of thrilling adventures to get up to, and countless photo-worthy moments waiting for you to capture.

This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism") Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war). Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering?
