Fighting Front-End Fatigue: Introduction to Elm | Workshop
詳細
Welcome to fight front-end fatigue!
WHAT IS THE WORKSHOP ABOUT?
The workshop is an introduction to Elm and Functional Programming in general. Elm is a pure functional language that compiles to Javascript. During the workshop we will explain some basic principles, showcase a few interesting examples and build a simple application from the ground up.
WHAT CAN YOU LEARN?
The workshop will challenge your present mindset, exposing you to a new paradigm and a different way of programming. Even if you are not going to use Elm in the future, the things that you will learn are applicable to other areas and they can help you to become a better developer.
SCHEDULE:
19:15 Doors open
19:30 Start and introductions
19:40-20:00 Lecture
20:00-21:00 Workshop and Q&A
21:00-21:30 Networking
WHO SHOULD JOIN?
The workshop is for everybody that is working (or would like to work) in the web development world and are curious of seeing something different from the usual mainstream technologies. The level will be simple so a basic knowledge of programming should be enough for following the session.
WHAT SHOULD I PREPARE?
We will have some hands-on where we will setup a basic development environment and build a simple application from scratch.
You can bring your laptop or just follow the live coding. You may want to have NodeJs installed in your machine (https://nodejs.org/en/download/) and possibly also a code editor of your choice with Elm plugins installed. I will use Atom with these two plugins installed: "elmjutsu" (https://atom.io/packages/elmjutsu) and "elm-format" (https://atom.io/packages/elm-format)
THINGS WE WILL COVER:
- Elm installation and basic commands (repl, reactor, init, make)
- "hello world" application
- Enhancing the environment: elm-format, elm-live
- The package ecosystem (https://package.elm-lang.org/)
- The Elm Architecture, a counter with Browser.sandbox
- No more CSS: elm-ui, responsive design
FACILITATOR INFO:
Luca is a front-end engineer at Rakuten. Three years ago, while struggling with a large vanilla Javascript application, he learned about Elm. Since then he started advocating Elm and Functional Programming. He is now organizing Elm Japan 2020, an international conference happening in Tokyo this April the 4th
