Why does Japan still use "Hanko" stamps?
[About this event]
When you move to Japan, one of the first things you might be told is, "You need a Hanko (personal seal)." While the rest of the world has moved to digital signatures, Japan’s ink-and-red-stamp culture remains deeply rooted in daily life and business.
But why? Is it just tradition, or is there a functional reason? In this intermediate-level Japanese discussion event, we will explore:
- The history and cultural significance of the Hanko.
- The pros and cons of using seals vs. signatures.
- The recent "Hanko-less" movement in Japanese government and companies.
This is a great chance to practice your Japanese while sharing your own experiences and hearing different perspectives.
[What to expect ]
Opinion Sharing: Share your own experiences in Japan.
Sociological Analysis: Discuss the "invisible layers" of Japanese society.
Useful Vocabulary: Pick up business and social discussion terms.
[Target Level ]
- Intermediate (JLPT N3 - N2 level)
- Perfect for those who want to move beyond daily conversation and talk about social issues.
【About the organizer】
I am a graduate of the University of Tokyo (Faculty of Law) and serve as a mentor for those who wish to explore Japan through the lens of Liberal Arts. Rather than just focusing on language acquisition, I help advanced learners "decipher" the complex layers of Japanese society, economy, and history.
In this session, I will act as a resource and a catalyst for deep analysis, helping you connect the dots between modern phenomena and their structural roots.
