Recap of Part 5, Act 3
The party started on their way to the Whitethrone but need to stop at the fish camps to get Nadya’s uncle Ringeirr, who can get them into the city. While trekking through snow they about midmorning they get fired on by Whitethrone winter guard falconers 220’ away, then Falcons that were hovering above dove in on the party. Ozzy was able to fly up on his eidolon to meet the falcons in midair, and he summoned a flying cheetah to help. Meanwhile Juno, Legifer, and Gutrender had to trudge through the snow to get into melee range, taking arrow damage as they closed in. Juno cast shield, and was able to deflect most of the arrows, Legifer was also hard to hit with his heavy armor, but Gutrender was hit hard. To add more to the problem when they got close, they also spotted a Winter Wolf hiding in the snow. The party needed to heal as they closed in on the guards, it was a great distance to cover in the snow (difficult terrain) but they made it. Legifer fell back due to his slow movement, but he did take out a Falcon that had broken away to attack him. Ozzy cast haste on the party and summoned some bat swarms, that nauseated some of the archers, and falcons for a few rounds. The winter wolf was able to hit some of the party with its cold cone breath weapon, while the archers kept shooting arrows. The party concentrated on the Winter wolf, and Juno was able to take it out with a fire shocking grasp spell on her weapon. But they were still taking some hits from the archers, and falcons, as the battle went on. The party took a beating, and the eidolon went down for a bit, but they did prevail. The party collected some nice MW +3 strength composite long bows, and Nadya was able to skin the unique winter wolf to get a Rimepelt. Maybe the party will be more efficient with some new bows for ranged attacks. The party would rest for the night, and start out again in the morning, they are close to the fish camps.
Before the fish camps they would have to deal with some Merrow (aquatic ogres) with long spears stopping passage in front of the bridge. There is also a sign telling all that come here that to do business in Whitethrone requires a license that can be acquired at the city gates. Ozzy tried some diplomacy, but communication was difficult, and the Merrow insisted on treasure to pay toll, suggesting the elk for payment. The creatures were detected to be evil by Legifer, and Gutrender was interested in any treasure they might have. Gutrender used the Rimepelt to change into a winter wolf, and that would start the battle. Legifer was able to avoid 3 attacks of opportunity as he attacked one of the merrow, doing extra smite damage. Gutrenders wolf managed to trip one of the Merrow on its attack, Ozzy summoned another large cat, and the party went to work. The Merrow got a few hits in, but they did not last long. The party spotted tracks leading under the bridge and found their hidden stash, a few gems, some gold, magic arrows and a Frost Forged chain shirt. After some healing the PC’s would continue to the fish camps. (day 9 of travel, 10:15 am)
Start of part 5, act 4
On the way to the Fishcamps Nadya shares a story about Ringeir Malenkov.
Ringeirr Malenkov is her late husband Hjalnek’s maternal uncle. When Nadya’s husband was just a boy, Ringeirr’s wife and son were taken by the White Witches and brought to Whitethrone. Ringeirr went to the city to rescue them, but though he was able to secretly enter the city and leave it again many times, tragically he never saw his family again. Nadya’s husband told her that Ringeirr stayed near Whitethrone, however, and the last she heard was that Ringeirr was living in the Fishcamps and working as a fisherman/smuggler. Nadya’s husband considered Ringeirr an expert in getting in and out of Whitethrone unnoticed, and she still places much stock in that opinion.
