Despite COVID, KNSJ is busier than ever gearing up to increase our music & information mission.
Our meetings can be attended by ZOOM from the comfort of your home.
We need volunteers, DJ, music lovers, writers, administrative assistance, social media savvy promoters, phone call makers, researchers, news hounds, reporters, show producers, voice over talent, on-air talent, show hosts, newsletter editors,The 2nd Thursday of every month is a meeting for music show hosts and those who want to DJ on Radio. Meeting locations change, so email music@KNSJ.org.
How much local music do you hear on the San Diego airwaves?
Corporate radio would have you believe that we live in a local music desert! The truth is that San Diego has a vibrant community of local musicians and artists, but commercial radio has all but ignored local talent. Not surprising because many San Diego stations are programmed out of corporate headquarters with the same playlist as doled out in Idaho and Maine. Shame on them!
KNSJ 89.1 FM intends to revolutionize the airwaves. KNSJ is community radio and wants to change the cultural landscape with alternative programming while supporting local artists and their listeners. KNSJ pledges to play more local bands and artists than all the rest of San Diego's radio stations combined.
KNSJ intends to focus on creative and socially conscious music. John Legend, in accepting the Oscar for best song, reminded us that "it's an artist’s duty to reflect the times we're in,"... " the struggle for justice is right now." KNSJ wants to create a cultural revolution of hope, of optimism, of love and ire... inspiring collective action to save the planet. While some music is created as escapism, other music becomes anthems for consciousness and change.
KNSJ’s Local Music Summits bring together local DJs, music producers, musicians and show hosts to talk about transforming the airwaves with new local radio shows and podcasts. The expectation is that the Local Music Summits will spawn a dozen other music shows from hip-hop to folk, reggae to Blues, Latin, Asian, African and Worldbeat. Many of these programs will feature interviews and insights into the musicians and their creative process as they minister through their music. The expectation is that more local music on the air will result in a growing appreciation of local cultural treasures and in time will result in larger audiences allowing for more musicians being able to sustain themselves through their craft. KNSJ looks towards the day when it becomes a clearing house for local music. KNSJ expects to host live music on the air, and co-sponsor concerts and festivals where there is a convergence of many of the performing arts including spoken word and dance. These music events will in turn support the community radio station, which depends on individual donations for its future growth.
Local musicians wanting to get their talent on the air can post their music on KNSJ at http://knsj.org/music/
Listen Up: No matter where you are you can listen to KNSJ.org or use the TuneIn radio app or find us on iTunes.

James Storm: Savage does not begin to explain award winning filmmaker James M. Storm and his crew of misfit guerilla filmmakers. At six years old, James began making his epic backyard productions armed with the family VHS camera and a crew of fearless neighborhood kids. Some of these movie obsessed friends still work with the company to this day, even after a lifetime of grueling filmmaking misadventures. By high School James had formed J.S. Co. PRODUCTIONS Digital Video Studios, his video production business, and had produced several feature length independent films. In later years the company suffered heartbreak and near collapse when a beloved team member suddenly and tragically passed away. James, embittered by the loss of his friend in conjunction with what he calls “The Hollywood Treatment” referring to his experience navigating the entertainment industry, was determined to henceforth maintain the creative integrity of his films. He did this by self-producing his own movies, even if that meant foregoing the luxury of a reasonable budget. In recent years James and his crew have produced over 75 independent films, documentaries, and music videos and have only just begun to break into the creative stratosphere. To this day James unapologetically maintains his position that his creative freedom and integrity are the keys to his unique and satisfying style of filmmaking. James will be the first to tell you, “My creative well runs deep and I don’t need a Hollywood budget to tell a great story. Even in a world of 4K, 5K, 10K… Give me a VHS camera and a flashlight and I’ll give you Gone with the Wind”. James currently resides in San Diego, CA where he is hard at work in his private studio preparing for the release of his latest 6 major film projects.
Mailon Rivera: Tall, charming, sexy with a voice that should be on nighttime radio. Mailon Rivera has been patiently honing a very successful acting career in Hollywood. The power of his electrifying magnetism has been witnessed as the romantic lead in BET's original film comedy "Midnight Blue," along with credits that include such top television shows as "The Shield," "Friends," "Seinfeld," "Arli$$," and the MTV series "Spyder Games." Not bad for a Puerto Rican kid from Brooklyn who once break danced for subway change in New York City's Times Square, in front of the same building that later was to headquarter MTV! "I wouldn't change that experience for anything in the world," he says. "I was practically homeless and sleeping on rooftops back then, but I think it made me stronger as a person because it allowed me to see what I really wanted in life. My life experience is important in that I can now show kids who have to grow up hard like me that there is another way out if you truly want something in life."
Ronnel Ricardo Parham is from West Philadelphia, PA. He has 4 other siblings whose names all begin with the letter "R," inspiring the creation of his production company, 5R Productions. After being in class for only two weeks, Ronnel fell in love with acting. He finally found his calling. He quickly found himself studying Theatre in college at West Chester University of PA. After graduation, he moved to New York City and continued to study theatre and performed in numerous Off Broadway plays. His passion for acting has taken him all over the country.
